Hiya all from Nottingham, UK I've just joined MoM and am amazed (and sad!) I haven't come across it before! I've been a huge McCaffrey fan since I was 13 and I came across copies of Restoree, Dragonflight and Dragonquest in my school's Library. The rest as 'they' say is history I'm now 34 so it has been a happy time of reading I'm a complete book addict and read pretty much any genre that I come across although Fantasy/Sci-fi was my first love and I re-read often. I've lost count the number of times I've re-read Anne Mcaffrey's books and I don't intend to stop My favourites would have to be the Dragonrider books although I do love the the others too

I think that's enough wittering for now, see you around!

Default Hello & Introduction

Hi Everyone - Just thought I would introduce myself...I am a huge fan of ALL of Anne's writings and should have joined years ago but life got in the way.

Just like this weekend, I had intended to participate fully in the new Quest but have not had a chance to even look at the questions yet. I feel so bad and I was really looking forward to it.

About me...
I live on a farm, on an island, off of the coast of British Columbia, Canada. My two daughters, young grandson and I raise purebred registered Suffolk sheep (to feed the Dragons of course! LOL): ) I don't believe in coincidences anymore...our breeding Ram came to us from a breeder on the east coast and his registered name is "Dragon".

We are also very active with our dogs and one of my daughters has taken an interest in dog showing, dog sports, like agility, and herding techniques.

I have recently traced my ancestry back a long, long way and have found deep ties to the Celtic people of Wales, as well as, north eastern England and Scotland. According to the Celtic tree zodiac I am a Rowan and my animal is the green dragon. I have never really followed these things in the past, however, I have found so many uncanny similarities that it is difficult to ignore.

Enough about me...I am looking forward to getting to know the interesting folks that love Pern and the other worlds of Anne McCaffrey, as much as I do.

Welcome, welcome!! We had sheep for awhile (Barbados Blackbelly), but the coyotes were taking too many for us. We sold them off. Now we have llamas. And my coincidence with our animals is that my husband is a musician and when we went to pick out our male llama, he made the choice and then they told us his name was Music Man. My hubby as just floored.

I know people with Barbardos Black Belly sheep, they grow hair and not wool...yes/no? So they don't require shearing.

We are fortunate on this small island that typically the only predators to our sheep are visiting dogs, (because it is mostly a rural area, tourists that bring their dogs with them, think the dogs can run freely or the dogs get away from their owners because they are in unusual circumstances), especially if there is more than one dog, they tend to get a pack mentality and terrorize the sheep.

As you may know, it can turn into quite a blood bath. I have assisted many local farmers with clean up of the aftermath. People don't believe the damage that their normally sweet tempered pet can do when given a chance to run wild. Instinct takes over. My youngest daughter has taken to raising awareness about this problem and has repeatedly done posters, educational displays and speeches, on the subject at several venues in the province.

I'm very glad you and your daughter are raising awareness of just what damage loose dogs can do; the veterinary clinic I worked at for 6 years did both small and large animals, and we did see the mauled sheep and goats. Awful! Dragons are much cleaner in their kills, unless they're proddy!

I like animals of most sorts. I have a dog that sleeps by my bed every night. But loose dogs are a serious problem and when they set themselves in pack mode terrible things happen. I for one never allow my dog to run loose but many of my neighbors do. You have my sympathy and I hope your daughter's efforts do some good.

In my field I have actually seen.... literally.... all sides of this particular equation.... (From the victim, both human and animal, to emergency vet care, to dog owner irresponsibility...all the way to the courts!!) Dogs, "running at large", alone or in packs can cause such damage! Dogs....especially when owned by the totally unknowledgable, can be incredibly dangerous! Some people just don't realize that an untrained/unsupervised animal can be compared to a loaded gun!!

Sorry...this sort of thing is a passion for me. I have seen the results of lack of owner resposibility so often it hurts! Often the victim is the loose dog himself...being hit and either injured or killed by cars..... And such an easily preventable set of circumstances!! And it is always the animals that pay the ultimate price in the end for the stupidity of their owners....

My dog, even though I consider him VERY well trained, still goes for some sort of schooling once a year! It's good for both of us...it keeps our bond nice and strong, and keeps his brain active...and his activities non-destructive!!! Every muscle needs to be excercised, in order to keep your dog healthy, wealthy and wise!!!

I too hope your daughters campaign works...if even one person gets the message and changes their ways...that is success!! Good luck and welcome to the forum!!

Yes, Cynth. Our sheep were the hair sheep. We have a lot of cattle around us also. The farmers will shoot the coyotes and hang them on the fence. We were going to try that, but we just decided we would let them go first.
