Would you want to go? Knowing there was a good chance you might not become a singer and so can't leave the planet at all, would you want to take the risk?

I think I would, with a whole planet to roam on and the guild supplied for purchase any hobby or item you'd need I don't think I'd have a problem with that.

I'm conflicted on this issue at present. For the longest time I would have jumped on the first ship. Now, I'm not so sure.

I've lived many years confined to one planet, so that wouldn't bother me. Since I know I don't have perfect pitch I don't think I'd go there, not knowing what sort of disability I'd end up with.

Good point Sandy.

I wouldn't have a problem with it, if I had to go there today. But I do think that if I was living in the FSP of Killa's time and had the choice of roaming the galaxy or being confined to Ballybran, I might opt to roam!

Unfortunately that's not the way it works Platinumdragon! All who apply to go to Ballybran have to have perfect pitch. It's a matter of how you adapt to the symbiont that determines whether you can sing crystal or not!

Depends on when you go. When Lars became Guild Master and got permission for recruitment, he was allowed to recruit educated staff who didn't have perfect pitch, for supporting roles. Just as well, since the guild was getting better and better at predicting who'd make Singer. Soon enough, everyone with perfect pitch would be a singer, and who'd then do all the mundane tasks that need to be done? Perfect pitch isn't necessary for a Milekey transition either, at least not if you're seriously sick, since Donalla had one.

I'm torn here as well. If I had perfect pitch and knew that I'd make it as a singer, then yes I would probably go. If the singing option wasn't there then I'd have to think about it. There is no shame (there shouldn't be anyhow) in being support staff but I don't know if I'd want to be restricted to the planet AND have to take the stuff that the singers can give out. I would seriously have to think about it. Besides I like to travel meet new people and see new things to who'd want to be trapped in one place (even if it is a whole planet )

I seem to get the impression that Lars active recruitment might mean that they might recruit for a specific support post that didnt require perfect pitch. After all, up to that point the support staff is comprised of the rejects, so to speak (though you need to read the bit about Antona who hoped that she wouldnt get a full transition).

Personally, I'd jump at the chance. Mainly to stop the diabetes.

My pitch is only very close perfect, but if it was, I don't know if I would go.
What if I didn't make a singer and went deaf?! Then there would be no more music! I'd go bananas

BUT, if it could in some way be a sure-fire guarantee I'd become a singer... Then yeah, I'd go.

I honestly don't think I would want to go. I know I have almost perfect pitch at the least, but as much as I love the books, the life of a singer does not appeal to me. I would hate to be stuck on one planet for the rest of my life in a job that I probably would not want, assuming I could not be a singer.

I do not believe that I have perfect pitch (not sure on this, I've never asked anyone and the only note I can sing without hearing is middle C although I can go up from there) but if I had a chance I think I would...I've been restricted to a small portion of one planet all my life already so *shrugs*

I think that I would strike a deal with the recruiters, so I could get in when my health was getting really bad, but in the meantime seek out hopelessly ill children and young people and communicate the hope of a healthy working life on Ballybran, being a singer or not!

Hope is so powerful and hope is needed in the world!

The Rowan is my favourite!

"The name rowan is believed to derive from the Norse runa - "a charm". It was often planted outside houses to ward off witches. On May Day a spray of rowan leaves was hung over doors to repel evil, and wells dressed with rowan to keep witches away. The rowan, or mountain ash, is found commonly in Scotland, sometimes clinging to a rock face."

Yeah, thanks for bumping this thread. I hadn't seen it yet. (-;
For me, I would love to be like Killa and make it big as a crystal singer but I know that wouldn't actually happen. I'm not that driven. Plus, it wouldn't be worth it if the transition wasn't a smooth Milekey one. I couldn't stand the pain of the other transitions. So, taking no chances (b/c I know the outcome) I would roam instead. Roam the planets, roam the new unchartered regions.

Well... since we're discussing a patently hypothetical scenario, we're completely free to do some editing to such things as skills and talents.

That said, I'm going to assume Shani intended for everyone to be of perfect pitch and run with that.

... Anyways, yes, I'd go to Ballybran. The risk factor is immediately dismissable due to the fact that risk is always going to be a factor. Risk just happens to be one of the true inescapables; odds for the most part are irrelevant -- whether they're good, bad or in-between doesn't change what has to be done.

So I'd grab at the chance and run with it.
