Post Mini article by Scarborough about writing PTB series with Anne

In the current issue of the DRIN (Del Rey Internet Newsletter, Feb 2006), contains a very short article "When two Ann/es Write as One" by Elizabeth Ann Scarborough, which is about their collaboration on the PTB series.

Also of note in this DRIN issue, it seems they're reprinting the first PTB book with new cover art.

What a pity nobody told Anne's publisher that her website address has changed...

Would have liked a bigger cover image..but the impression I got seems nice enough. Still prefer my copy, if only for the meaning it holds for me.

Interesting unicorn, tho it's exactly as I thought it would look based on the description in the book.
Wouldn't a horn in the middle of the upper forehead make more sense to break ice tho? I can't see a horn on the nose as having enough force to break thru the ice and it seems that it would hurt the neck.

I would think the horn at the end of the nose would have more leverage (though not curving backwards as the one on the new cover). In the center of the head, all they could do with it is ram it into the ground, which seems very awkward.

Rhinos have horns on the end of their noses... and that seems to be pretty effective. Yes, I know rhinos are also larger, with thick horns, and they don't break ice.

Can't say as I care for the new cover. I'm rather partial to the Rowena ones.

I think that they should have had just the one horn, the two look odd to me.

The one on the nose, like Cheryl said should be pointing down to break the ice with, or to use in a defensive move.

I do like really like the drawings done bue Terese Neilsen, they are very good, in my opinion.

That curved horn bugs me. I think it should be short and stubby to make it break the ice. The curve just doesn't fit to me. But it's an artist interpretation, and it seems the artist read the book or they would probably have put the horn in the forehead, and that's what they saw. I'll live with it.

It seems like they're not keeping the DRIN archives available anymore, which is idiotic.

Here's the text of the article:
Quote:
When Two Ann/es Write as One

By Elizabeth Ann Scarborough

Anne McCaffrey and I dreamed up Petaybee, our sentient world populated by a racial mix of Irish and Inuit (Eskimos), after her first trip to Fairbanks, when I took my first trip to Ireland. While Anne was in Fairbanks, my former home, I made sure she got to enjoy the Northern Lights and took her out to my friends the Melchiors, who gave her a dogsled ride and moose spaghetti.

When I went to Ireland to research Irish folk music for some other books I was writing, we decided to try co-writing one. "What shall we write about?" I asked. "Oh, dogsleds and the Irish," she said. A little while later, she declared, "I have an idea," and retired to her office to write the first ten pages of Powers That Be. Handing me the disk, she said, "You take it," and I wrote the next twenty pages. Leapfrogging, editing each other's prose, we wrote our book in two fun-filled months. I spent large parts of the next two years at her house doing the same, and then we took a hiatus because she had so many other projects and my cats were tired of sharing me with her cats.

Changelings let us collaborate via the miracle of email, with a couple of in-person conferences when Anne returned to the States to pick up awards. As we work on the Twins of Petaybee series, I hope she keeps winning more awards so we have more opportunities for conferring face to face!

They do if they fall on it from a great height. And if the ice is thin enough.

The new cover art is interesting...

Certainly it needs some form of curve - be it the whole horn, or just a sortof curved texture going up the top (so it looks like a spiral), but unless that Curlyhorn can lay on it's back, I don't think it'll crack ice to well.

In the books they mention them rearing, then thumping down, so if that horn was rotated by 180 degrees *g*
