Question How would you tell, if something breaking fan fic rules?

Also on the same idea, how do you tell "Mary Sue" or the guy version?

Like in Pern base fan fic?

PS The reason is I've come a cross one over at FanFic.Net and I do not what to start a power keg here, only one story to go on and spelling Weyr as wyer and the story reminds me alot of HH1 with an Impression of the queen dragonet at the end.

Also Orth is T'bor bronze dragon from the Dragonrider of Pern (r) (c) and no disclaimer on NOT OWN PERN as far as I can tell, sometime I post reviews and got back some bad feedback that I don't know what I am talking about even if its coming from my memories of reading the books!
Help please. I think I can get hold of the hyperlink of the story if that would help!

Ginny, I don't believe there's any point in disclaimers. I never used them for my fanfic - it's a given fact that if you're writing fanfic, you're doing it with no legal right to the setting or characters whatsoever. Pointing it out in a preface is quite unnecessary.

That said, she (I'm assuming a she here - it usually is) does seem to have taken practically every aspect of her opening two paragraphs from Dragonsong. As for the rest - well, it's a standard Sue Impression-fic. I'd worry less about her using a different rider for Bronze Orth than I would the fact that she seems to be illiterate.

No fanfic rules being broken here - just shitty writing. Leave constructive criticism if you want, or snark about it elsewhere, but don't worry about complaining to some elusive higher authority. There isn't one, as far as these things go.

I've only written 2 fanfic poems and they're here somewhere and I think I stated something along the lines of having read the books and that's what inspired me to write it. I can only give you my humble opinion of asking someone who has written a lot more fanfic than I have about it. I think there's something on Anne's site as well as Hans' about fanfic, check there first as to what her rules are about it and then go from there.

These days, pretty much anything goes aside from outright porn, and that isn't something you'll find on ff.net.

Anne's rules are here.

Bad writing, while it may be offensive, isn't breaking any rules. There's not much to be gained in pointing it out.

Ginny, I'll help if I can. What exactly was the problem? Can you tell me which story you reviewed that you're having a problem with?

I tend to simply ignore people who don't like my comments, long as there's no name calling involved. But that's just me. Haven't had anyone tell me I didn't know what I was talking about though. Probably again I'd just let it go rather than get excited about it, since people are allowed to disagree.

Red face Re: How would you tell, if something breaking fan fic rules?

Or how about your information come from memory, and your English is not written right. For I do sometime have a hard time trying to translated my ideas from my mind to writing. Kinda like right now!

That can happen to all of us, usually at the most inconvenient moments, Ginny. I got my thesis back on Thursday (I passed, just) Opened it, and on the first page, some very silly very basic typos that I didn't pick up -

Then explain that, rather than complaining about them. Or you can always just ignore them and their stories. That way everyone's happy and the author can hide in thier own little cocoon unaware that not everyone's just like them.

I know the feeling. "Nod head yes" to hear you passed.

I been known to find sometime the oddest to me, typos. I hope with the built in spell-checker is helping folks read my post better.

I still have yet to figure out how MS Word changed Tiamat to Teammate in a paper I did in college. That was mortifying.

I had some problems spelling or get the spell-check to understand where I was going to school too.

I was just think of some of the fan basic writing might be better in AU. "Shrug shoulders" Or the person has not cross-check their information before posting.

I didn't get as far as the acknowledgements. It's instead of its in the abstract. I guess it shows that it was written at about 3am!

Did your lecturers see the funny side? How did you spell it, if you dont mind me asking? I hope you know I'm not laughing at you, (but it's pretty ironic if you dont mind me saying...)
And yes, the typos can happen to anyone... I just typed "Dragon's Kin" as "Dragonskin" in the marketplace!

I have done a few like that, too. Outside of something I did that backfired on me. Getting to tired to tell it right now.

It didn't help my marks. The outside marker was someone who was nitpicky about where the commas were in my footnotes, leave alone spelling mistakes. And, for her information, Fydell Edmund Garrett does have two Ts!
