I hope kibby's foot situation is resolved soon.

I think I'll probably make it in stages, let the base set a bit, then add the filling and then let that set, finally melt the chocolate and then take it off the heat, still stirring, then just before it cools too far to pour, add it to the pre-set pie and then cross my fingers!

I don't think I've ever had it. Is that made from hazel nuts? I've bought a container of the "chocolate shell" topping. If Simon melts chocolate to put over his version we should compare end results. It's just too bad we can't all get together and have a tasting!

Yes Cilla, it is hazelnut chocolate paste, Italian of origin but I think sold worldwide since many years. Also good to paste onto your white bread, yummy. Chocolate on bread, what more do you want? Of course the Dutch were the ones to have chocolate sprinkles on bread, the rest of the world puts it on cakes, we put it on bread!

In my opinion, the Dutch make the very best chocolate. Most American chocolate is horrible, not even what I would call edible. There are a few local companies that do a decent job because they go for taste and quality, not mass production!

Simon has made his!

The base is way too thick, but other than that, happy with it.

I used well beaten whipping cream with sugar and a little Xanthum gum instead of the cool whip and it seems to have worked just fine!

I've never really got into Nutella. I prefer chocolate spread (as in not nut based).

Yummmm! I have not made mine yet. Mike's birthday is Thursday but since he and Jenn may go to his mom's for dinner, Jenn suggested I make my pie for this weekend. I will certainly take pictures.

Thunder rolling in the distance. It's warm here, if not hot, 27.7 C indoors and a degree hotter outdoors... Luckily we have our bedrooms in the basement, so it's a few degrees cooler there.

Us and the erstwhile Dutch which are now called Belgians, more precisely Flemish
Sadly I have to agree with you on US chocolate. I once had a bar of hersheys as a gift. That was supposed to be a good brand. It taste like vomit. Seriously, it was awful.

I won't go near Hershey's, it is disgusting! As I said, there are a few local companies (possibly in every state) who make small batches of really good chocolate. National brands are gross!

Just got word from a good friend that Warner Brothers has bought the options to all the Pern books. Perhaps there may be a movie someday. As I said to her; "let the rabid fan arguing begin-who for directors, music, actors".

I hope they do a good job. If it does not follow the books the fans won't be happy.

So far all Kibby has asked for her birthday is to LARPing, so I will be in Staunton on Sat. We're going to take her to breakfast with family first.

I hope Mom is up to going out. Since her fall July 4 she has not been doing very well. Very tired, weak and shaky. Just not felling good and is still in a lot of pain. She went to the hospital last night. They gave her an I.V for dehydration and checked her over very well. Nothing showed up. She is felling a bit better today. The pain meds they gave her is not working. We don't want to leave her alone right now.

...Murphey's Law strikes again.

Today one of my housemates went into hospital to have their gall bladder removed. Plan being for me to be looking after her for the next couple of weeks.

...Also today my mother was admitted to hospital 500 miles north when she collapsed - having been in a poor state for several weeks (I had been pushing for her to go to hospital when I was up there a couple of weeks ago, but our doctor said no). Not much info so far other than that there is some form of swelling causing pressure on the brain stem. My father is mentally impaired and usually cared for by her...so he's in a right state, also makes it really hard to get solid info on what's going on.

Will spend most of today tomorrow on the phone to the hospital again until I find out what the story is - and quite possibly then jump in the car and drive up north...after figuring out some sort of care arrangements down here...

Of all weeks this had to happen...why this one!?!

Ps. If I do end up making the drive, will be the Saab I take not the poor coolingly challenged Skoda!

My goodness, everything came at once! I hope your mom will be ok. This seems to have been a year of medical emergencies for a lot of people! Safe trip north and I hope you are able to find someone to take over the care of your housemate. I had my gallbladder removed about 15 years ago. I think it depends what they find how simple or difficult the operation turns out to be. Good luck!

Zelandeth. I hope your Mom is better soon.

My Mom seems to be a little better today. My niece, Melissa is going to come down for a while on Sat. there is a neighbor who can look in on her as well. That depends on Seth. He has been having nose bleeds, three today, for a couple of day and complaining he is cold. His temp. was up. The Dr. said it was a virus and to give him Tyrol. His temp. went down, now he is wide awake and feeling much better. Which is good. Now he wants to play, at midnight.

Not good news.

The mass causing the pressure appears to be cancerous, and appears to have spread from elsewhere. The main body appears to be in her lungs.

Given that it has already spread there is no cure possible, and it will just be a matter of managing the symptoms. Longer/shorter terms are still unclear as they don't yet know what type of cancer it is, and as soon as any further info appears we'll keep things updated here.

Will be flying up tomorrow.

Seth is at UVA. His temp. was up and did not go down and he has been having nose bleeds. Melissa skipped local hospital and took him there. They think it might be a brain problem from his surgery in June. They are running tests, trying to rule out meningitis. They are hoping for anything except that.

His blood work shows something is going on, don't know what. They are going to do a full body MRI. If that does not show anything they will do a spinal tap. We haven't put it on Facebook yet, Melissa is waiting for test results before saying anything.

For a late dessert, Kibby got off late, we had Kibby's 19th birthday cake and gave her presents. I am taking her LARPing tomorrow and will be out of town.

Hubby and I got her a steampunk one eyed rabbit pin and a throwing star pointed thing. Mom got her a cooper bracelet in steampunk style and tammy gave her a Dungeons and Dragon starter kit. She is happy. She would be happier if she had not worked 9 hours, standing on her feet. She is pain.

Thanks for the good wishes folks. It does help, believe it or not.

Have spent the last couple of days mostly split between sitting at her bedside and trying to help retain my father's sanity. He already has mental problems following a brain injury back in 1994, so that's always a bit of a headache, even aside from the current situation.

She's very weak at the moment, but is lucid in short bursts. It's not clear whether or not we should be expecting to see any sort of improvement from this point before the inevitable, as we seem to get differing views depending on which doctor we get the news from.

Realistically we're talking days, weeks or maybe months if we're lucky.
