Question Del Rey Dragonquest cover

I posted about this in a different topic in the Pern forum, but felt the question should be asked here too as it may get a better chance of being noticed.

Did Del Rey ever actually use this cover on Dragonquest (i.e. does anyone own a copy with this cover?):

This was a projected cover for the book which recycled the artwork they'd origianlly planned to use on Skies of Pern but ended up changing. I've gotten so used to seeing that image as stock photo at least of DQ, but it's just occurred to me that I never saw a physical copy with it, and have an alternate version of the cover myself (this one)

Kibbies copy of Skies of Pern has that same style. I know I have seen it on other books also. I'm thinking at the library. I'll look tomarrow.

I don't have any of the new style covers, as I think they are very plain and somewhat ugly. I also have seen them use this one in the stock photo.

I have Dragonquest in that style of re-cover but it has a part of the original Whelan cover art (which, apparently someone has been playing with digitally) in the box between author's name and title, not the rejected art for the The Skies of Pern hc cover.

That doesn't give you surety if they (n)ever used it though.

My copy is a 49th printing.

Maw, I know there's a lot in this style, as this is the latest cover design series from Del Rey. I'm asking specifically if anyone has seen Dragonquest with the art shown above.

I agree Lin, that the design makes them plain and somewhat ugly. I hope they'll dispense with the series soon and either go back to the classic covers or give us something new as full-cover art. But, after completely disdaining this series of covers for a few years, I am finally trying to collect them...

There is one selling on ebay now that has that cover as their photo. Granted, it is a stock photo picture.

It does seem odd that everyone uses it for their stock photo...but know one has one??? Where did they get the photo if it has never been published?? This is strange...a mystery...I love a mystery!!!

I think the stock photo is merely linked to title and/or ISBN, Maelin. So if you fill out the data as seller, the system will add the pic.

I've also seen the Brilliance audio DF box/art used for regular Dragonflight books!

Yes Hans, but where did they get it if it wasn't a real book cover...you would think that somewhere out there, there is a real issued edition with that cover on it...goes of pondering all of this

Oh, the designs were made of course, like with the jacket/cover for The Skies of Pern.

Drat, I thought Cheryl had posted a picture.
This is the cover that never came to be, we like to think the reason was fan-intervention

I posted a pic in the related thread in the Pern forum.

Lin, they planned to use this picture originally for Skies (and then a modified version for DQ), but changed before publication. But after I guess they sent out promotional material with these covers, so that they got into databanks everywhere as the stock photo for the cover.

Cheryl and Hans...Thank you both, for your answers...that does make since...but you would have thought that they would stop using it, in favor of the one that was used on the cover, if for no other reason than to sell more copies of the book...sigh..trying to figure out the publishing mind would take more years than I have left...and who would want to...YUCK!!!

Yes the second picture of it was very usefull especially for those like me, I could see the bigger version that Hans put up a lot better...Boy is that thing ugly...and just downright weird looking!!!

Yes, but that would take someone who could replace the cover in the stock database noticing that the picture is wrong.

You would think that someone from the publishers would notice...and have it changed...but perhaps they are too busy with all the new books to worry about whats happening with any of the old ones....
