Default Fire Lizard theory

Lying in bed this morning, looking at my Welsh flag, I wondered why there was no Red (dragonet) evolved. It seemed to make as much sense as any other colour.

Then I thought about it. Their original habitat was a tropical coastline (predominantly). This, then, helped me rationalise nearly every colour.

Greens - Used for hunting in the foliage at the beach's edge, possibly even inland. I would imagine they would be good for retrieving wherry hatchlings and eggs, a multitude of insects and small creatures we weren't told about.

Blues - Quite obviously, specially suited to flying over the surface of the water unobserved (blending in with both sky and the waves from below due to a fish's bad eye sight) and plucking creatures from the sea/rivers.

Browns - Proved problematic, until I remembered that it was said in DD that Fire Lizards were the natural predators of tunnel snakes, and Sean's browns were particularly good at that. I envisaged a scenario where a brown was able to lie in wait in the mouth of a tunnel snake's lair and, due to its camouflage, be able to strike at the last second.

Bronzes - Seem to be fairly obviously a question of dominance. Bronze serves no useful camouflaging property that I can think of, however, I recall that the chromatic fire lizards did the majority of the world leading up to a hatching.

Golds - The success of a gold's mating flight depends almost entirely on how fast, far and high she travels. Part of this is eluding her bronze suitors. What better way to do this than to be able to be lost in the sun? Whilst not totally convincing, this camouflage may well prove necessary for the extra second the gold needs to escape the bronze and travel further still.

Very interesting thoughts you have about the firelizard colors...I wonder if Anne has ever stated why she picked the colors that she did???

Hans...Cheryl...Becky...or anyone else know what the answer is of why Anne chose the colors she did for the Dragons and the Firelizards???

I think that gold and bronz could possible and browns too resemble rocks. Thay maybe able to blend it to the sand.

That's an interesting point. Huh, I wonder too. I know red is not used in the army for instance because it's well... red. But, at least in insects, bright reds and yellows are used to warn off predators (except duh, a dragon is a dragon.) Hmmm, maybe I just answered myself. I still think it's an interesting theory!

Actually, Anne's come up with a pseudo-scientific explantion for the firelizard colours, in consultation with Dr Jack Cohen. The colours are linked to the colours you can get from copper-compounds, and the flits/dragons have a copper-based compound as their haemoglobin substitute.

I like the colors as camouflage theory a bit more. It's not cluttered up with psuedo-science.

Kath, I knew someone in here would know how Anne came about her colors for the Dragons and firelizards....Thank you for clearing that up for me.

P.S. I probably should have known this myself...but these days I can't remember half of what I know I know....drat seiveheaditis has stuck again!!!

It may have to do with what they eat as well as camaflage. I know that if flamengo don't eat a certin type of food they lose thier pink color. But the ones that can comaflage better are more likely to live.

Another thing, probably more handily coincidental than intentional, but with the current colors, B=boy, G=girl. If there were red ones, it wouldn't fit into that

lol. Ya got a point there, Spiff! Wow. I hadn't realized exactly what was behind the coloring, Kath. Thanks for clearing that up for me too! Seems copper would help ignite that flame as well. Wikipedia says it's an excellent thermal condutor.

Errr... no. Copper's not really known for burning all that easily, and a dragon's ichor is unlikely to be running at that high a temperature anyway.

Nice try though!
