Hmmm. I wondered about posting a picture of our attic, or the jungle in our front garden, but then I came across this scene, which I photographed a few years ago when newly painted:

This is the artwork inside the Burns Shelter in Prestonpans, East Lothian, Scotland. It was painted by local artist Kate Hunter, and is part of the Prestonpans Murals Trail: a collection of local exterior art work waiting to be discovered along the sea front. This shelter is rumoured to have been used by Robert Burns on his visit to Prestonpans during an illness. The scenes from Tam O'Shanter seem to match Peter's chaos theme quite well. If you are curious click on this link to see the other works of art. This one is number 29.

Ah! 'The cutty sark'! I was wondering what Steve would post: a tangle of galaxies, or a board full of equations?

Steven, Marjon and I have seen a number of the Prestonpans murals and I even photographed a few of them. Some of them are fantastic!

Lovely images all of you

This is Fremont Street in Las Vegas, Nevada, right before New Years' 2005. Sin City definitely qualifies as chaotic!

My addittion to this will have to wait until Thursday night. "Chaos" is defined by elementary children on a playing field.

From today's trip to Heidelberg Zoo. I'd been hoping to catch something suitable, and this just hit the spot. Had to get Jez to wield the camera though, as I was holding Matthew so he could watch the fish at the time... but the choice of photo and crop was mine.

Are we posting discussion to the same thread now?

Kath, I really like your fish photo. (It was very hard not to react instantly .) The fish are terrific, the colours are stunning and the texture of the water looks great too. Did you use a polariser to eliminate the reflections?

Shalyn, your picture is a classic. It brings back memories of electronic cabinets I have seen at observatories all over the world. (The electronics inside the instruments is always meticulously tidy, routed through carefully chosen labelled connectors and fixed in place by meticulously positioned cable ties. Then at the other end of the cables the electronics cabinet looks like a rats nest. )

Cheryl and Peter, your pictures are great too. How many of us have a room which looks just like that?

AnnMarie, there is no time limit to posting to this thread. I'd like to see what chaos your children can create.

Thanks, Steven.

No, no polariser at all - just very good conditions for minimal reflections (sun straight up, camera straight down, and a very still, deep and sheltered fishpond - actually part of the moat around the Lion enclosure!). I did tweak it slightly in photoshop with a quick autocolor/autolevel, but there's very little difference to the original - less of a green colour in the water, but that's pretty much it. The fish were quite naturally beautiful and performed well - for 50c worth of fish-food from the dispenser, I'd say the results were well worth it!

It was fascinating to see different people's ideas of chaos from all over the world!

Kath, I reaLLy like yours for all the reason Steven B. mentioned! Zippo discracting reflection- I could practically feel the cool wet scales on those fish.

I've never been to Copenhagen, Lady M., but your photo brought it to me! I was wondering if the street signs were in Norwegian, but I do see some English words. I'm glad the dinner seemed to worth the crowds!

Finally found time to comment!

Cheryl - oh, that's achingly familiar!

Hans - great idea, and I really like the shot, too.

Weyrlady - that it does!

Shalyn - that reminds me of the underside of our desk-island in our office, which has recently been de-tangled and still looks horrific. Great idea.

Steven B - very interesting! I like the information behind it more than the photo itself, but it's great to hear of such fascinating public artworks.

P'ter - that clutter is clearly far too neatly piled! You need to lock a few teenagers in there for an hour, and retake the photo...

Lady M - very busy scene. Nice.

I think Hans' photo is my favourite of the lot though, just for the bizarre mix of all those beers...

Kath: that cluther is what I live with until the Council allocate me a flat. It's bad enough as it is without letting the kids loose in it.

Kath - I love that photo!

Stephen B - That picture is both cool and disturbing. I like that.

Hans - who doesn't like pub signs? But you can't find the door for all the adverts!

Lady M - pretty picture of a street!

Cheryl - you have kids?

P'ter - hope you get out of there soon!

Weyrlady - Vegas is chaotic. Very.

A lovely set of submissions on this one!

My favorite is definitely Kath's, which fits the theme while also being stunningly beautiful.

I also really like Hans's and Steven's. Hans's has an orderliness to the chaos that appeals to the eye. Steven's is literally a work of art (and perhaps as such is cheating!) that is very attractive.

Shalyn, I like the idea of yours more than the specific example of electronic cord chaos, maybe because it's actually a fairly well organized cable bundle and I've seen many that are truly chaotic and impossible to maintain/fix when needed.

My own I really don't like, it's too trite, but it's all I could think of pulling from my collection of pics. The only element I do like is that you can play spot the real cat in the mess.

Yeah, I try to keep my wire closet fairly neat. When I took that picture, I was tracing two cables. Yeesh!

The pic that I asked about posting was a close-up of the tangledest part of this mess.

A bit late - but posted just because I love the riotous indiscipline of the colours. A couple of racks outside a sari shop in Edinburgh's Grassmarket.

More colour chaos - a swirl of autumnal leaves at the corner of a building site.
