Default Eastercon - Birmingham UK April 2011

http://www.illustrious.org.uk/

Here's a sneak preview of some programme items:

"From Nik: One advantage of being con chair is that I get to see the programme long before anyone apart from the programming team. Between now and the official publication of the programme I thought I'd share with you some of the items in the planning list that have caught my interest.

Space Art v. SF Art - a panel of artists (including our GoH David A. Hardy) discuss the similarities and differences between these two artistic genres.

Mars, Bringer of War - the different theories on and uses of the Red Planet throughout the history of Science (and) Fiction. (Sponsored by Satellite 3.)

Pimp My Nerf Gun - How to turn a kid's toy into a cool-looking weapon.

Women Writers in SF and F - How come there are lots of female fantasy writers but far fewer in SF, perhaps especially in military SF?

Literary Fiction, Genre Fiction, Non-fiction - Literary fiction looks down on genre fiction, which in turn looks down on non-fiction. Is this fair? Is imagining something really harder than researching it?"

(btw - this conjunkie is attending )

I can probably make it (at least some of the time) by bike and the unwaged cost is attractive.

*Sigh* I do love Australia bt sometimes I wish I lived in the UK or the US. That way I might actually be able to go a major Con!

Mind you, we did have one in Melbourne last year & I still didn't make it!Although it was only a couple of weeks before my uni exams so I didn't have a choice. *double sigh*

I still would like to try get to Dragoncon in September, although once again I think my finances will thwart me. *Triple sigh*

Samsara, you've given me an alternative to our holiday ideas. Hubby wanted to know where to go for holidays this year. So far the only one we've come up with is to visit the rellos in Queensland but with the flooding, I'm not sure about their roads, airports etc will be by the July school holidays so the other option would be to go to Perth. Maybe we could do a mini-gather with you, myself and Joz perhaps.

There is plenty to do here, but we can talk about that in another thread or via PM - so we dont highjack KC's Eastercon thread...

This looks great but it's happening the same week Mike and Tania are with us this year. Too many things happening at the same time.

If you go please give my regards to Nik if you meet her there. She's a good friend, and an enthusiastic organiser of such things.

Unable to attend Swancon as we're already booked up that weekend with stuff around home. If we're going, it'll be during the Victorian school holidays of July or September. Samsara, already spoke to hubby and he's thinking along the lines of travelling across the Nullabour if we go. Will let you know when we've sufficiently saved up to do so and when we've put the time off work form in too.

Just "Bumping" this a bit as Eastercon is this weekend.

Anneli and Peter, what's the chance of a "mini-gather"? Do I need to PM my mobile number?

And pics please of the mini-gather and EasterCon too.

Samsara, actually our Cons are quite good, having been to 2 different ones so far. Just because we live in Australia, doesn't mean you miss out on seeing "superstars" of the entertainment world (written or screen). How else do we get to meet the likes of George RR Martin or Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy) without them coming to our Cons? Besides I've got hubby thinking about going to Supanova in Perth at the end of June so don't get your knickers knotted too quickly as the "I dream of Jeannie" stars will be attending. Just a question of putting our holiday forms in at work and heading off into the big wide world, so to speak.

Enjoy Eastercon, folks, and please give Nik Whitehead our best regards. She's a good friend, a great singer, frighteningly intelligent, and this is her first con as organizer. Do please make the effort to stop by and let her know if you're enjoying it.

Just realised that I hadn't noted that KC & I met up for lunch.

Cheap-skate that I am: I got there for free as I can use my OAP travel pass anywhere within Birmingham.
