Default Passing of Ryk Reaser/Captain Becker

Dear friends,
I've just learned that our dear friend, Ryk Reaser, the imaginative jeweler and oral storyteller who was the model for Captain Becker in the Acorna series, died this morning. Ryk was thrilled to be able to inspire us as we worked on the collabs following the first two Acorna books and had a great time hanging out with Annie and me at Dragoncon several years ago. When last Anne visited me, we went to Ryk's for dinner.
He was always ready to help get the story moving again with ideas and loved science fiction and fantasy.
He was a decorated Vietnam vet and he and I collaborated on one short story, LONG TIME COMING HOME, for the anthology SHADOW OF THE WALL, (available, I believe, in electronic format for the Sony e-reader).
He had a lot of severe medical conditions and had been in a lot of pain recently and probably his heart gave out.
Boo, Ryk's cat who was the model for RK, survives him.

I'm very sorry to hear that but reading your post I'm assuming he had a pretty full life and many friends will keep him in their memories? You gave him a little bit of immortality with the character of Captain Bcker, the dedication and the short story, which I haven't read but might if it is available in other formats than you specify.

Hans, the short story is in the anthology SHADOWS OF THE WALL and came out some time ago. Since both Ryk and I were Vietnam veterans and I had already written HEALER'S WAR, we collaborated on the story for the anthology about the wall. I think it probably came out in 2000 or 2001. I don't know about other e-book formats, only that Teknobooks did sell it to Sony for their reader.

Ryk's girlfriend Andy presently has Boo and the three dogs but it's going to be hard for her to find a new, less expensive place to live where she can keep all the critters. Of course, Boo could come and stay with us if he wanted but the dogs would be more difficult as I'm not really set up for dogs.

Yes, he was the inspiration for those characters too. And the locksmith in Lady in the Loch, one of my solo books. (Lanen knows ALL about that one).

Yes yes yes! Go out, find a copy, buy one for yourself and one for a pal and enjoy a great romp through Sir Walter Scott's early history and a tap dance through Edinburgh and the Lothians. We had such fun! Annie came to visit when she was doing research, that's when we met. We were both *seriously* broke, but we did have a grand time! Except my horrible clothes dryer of the time killed her leggings.

No, sometimes they are major ones.

I've just found a song called Lady OF the Loch, and it's downloadable as a ringtone.

Fancy that! In the title of the book, the preposition was important but that is certainly very close.

The song appears to be about the Loch Ness Monster

Gang, could we move any other topics to a different thread? My friend just died four days ago and I don't really want to keep revisiting this. I just wanted to let those of you who know the books or got to meet Ryk that he's gone. If there are moderators on the site, perhaps they could close the thread now?

Look for the forum leaders Eann. On the bottom of the main page there is a link (I'd do a screen shot and things but I'm at uni so I can't). Here's the link though.

I'm really sorry to hear about your friend. I haven't read all the Acorna books but the two characters in question are really likable.
