Default Edition question, sort of...

How do you find out what edition a book is if it has no numbers in the front? I thought I remembered someone like Edith asking this question before but I can't seem to find it now...

Anyways, I went to my first ever car boot sale today and came back with a bunch of books (only one Anne though, Damia's Children in paperback). Unfortunately, I can't travel with lots of books so I have to resell them on, but the dude told me that the MErcedes Lackey hardcover book I bought was a 1st edition, but there're no numbers in it

It doesn't even have the publishing date? Cause if there's only one, then that would make it a first edition...

Hmm, are we sure it's not a bookclub edition? It's odd for it not to say even "first edition, published 2003". Will have to see if I have other books from DAW to see what their standard is.

Wouldn't it say bookclub edition somewhere? I don't know otherwise, it doesn't appear to be like the much smaller bookclub editions are, I think I got one of those of Terry Brooks ones...

The biggest giveaway that it's a book club is if there is a price on the dust jacket front flap. If there's no price then it's more than likely a book club since if it's for public sale at a store it has to have the price on it and book clubs don't.
I'd think that any book published in 2003 would have the number line for editions on it somewhere.

I've got a lot of book club editions of books - and most of them DO NOT SAY "book club edition". The only reason I know they are is because I bought them from the SFBC myself! (Since I don't really collect - I like BCE's because I can usually get a hardcover that way.)

If there are no publication numbers in the front, that, too, is a dead giveaway.

I like reading hard cover books so I get the sfbc ones as my reading copies. I've got several of the more current first editions that I've bought and put directly on the shelf. Never even opened.
But with the book club editions starting to be as expensive as the 1st editions I'm thinking I'll just wait and buy them second hand or else by another 1st edition second hand.

Oh, another thought on the original question....... her very early books didn't have the convenient number line, they just had the copyright info and stated where first printed. But as mentioned before current books should have the number line in some form.
