Default Collecting Highlight (27) - Ral Partha Bronze Dragon of Pern

This is the "metal masterpiece, suitable for use with our fantasy army or role-playing adventure game". It was sculpted for Ral Partha by Julie Guthrie.
It is 25mm scale and contains 7 pieces, two wings, body, tail, neck/head, and two riders. The finished piece stands approximately 4 3/4" in height and 5 1/2" in length and has a 7" wingspan. (Paints and brushes are not included)

Quote on the bottom box back - "My dragons as from my mind!" - Anne McCaffrey.

This dragon does have a rather 'horsey' feel to it, which you can see in the instruction page in the second photograph.

I don't know what they sold for orignally in 1984, but they are pretty hard to find now. I actually found two over the years. The first one didn't have the top lid, but all the instructions and the pieces were there. I then found the one pictured. The lid isn't in the most perfect of conditions as it's had liquid damage to it, you can see the stained ring in the photo above. But it's complete so I'm happy. I paid, probably too much for it, around $75 back in 2001 or so. But something so hard to find makes you grab it when you see it. Oh, if you're wondering, the first one I found was given to a friend as a gift.

don't know about equine; looks almost ape like to me.

Interesting aquisition though.

I've been trying for years to get my hands on one of these, but they always go more expensive than I want to pay (which is saying something for me!).

I could not find these when they came out. And I looked. The last one I saw on ebay went for over $250.

P'ter, I guess it does look ape-like in the photo, but in real life it does look more horse-like.

Cheryl, I thought I paid too much for it when I bought it. But I am guessing I did ok based on what JJ posted.

JJ, WOW!!! I'm surprised that they are going for that amount now. I'll have to start searching the web for these things again. Just to see what they're selling for now.

I just found out that Julie Guthrie is going to be at DragonCon Sept 1-4, 2006.
How neat is that, I post about the dragon and then find she's appearing at DragonCon. Cool! Wish I was going to DC too now!

Becky, This is fantastic to finally see one of these. I should have known that you would have one of them too.

What a nice Collecting Highlight, Becky!

I do think that people should see the thing as it should look, assembled and painted, don't you think so, too? (Sorry, I don't have a better pic than this one)

Hans, nicely done! Where'd you find that picture, or do you have one that's 'done'? Makes me want one that's been finished. Whoever did it did a super job!

Thanks for the picture!

No, I don't own a Ral Partha Pern dragon; as has been said, they are rather expensive

This picture I found on the internet once, it's one of a set of four. But it's a long time ago and I can't remember from which website or auction.

A set of four pictures of the miniature that belong together. There was only the one Ral partha Pern Dragon made, Jax.

Thanks again, Hans for the info. I was kind of wondering like Jax if there were more Pern dragons. I've been to Ral Partha's site and didn't find any info on more of them. So glad that I wasn't missing out on more collectibles!

That dragon is so totally scaled to feet, not meters.....

That's a cool mini. And if I could get one that I could afford, I would totally assemble and paint it. (Or find someone good at painting minis, and have them do it.)

Good luck.

I want one, but no way would I spend $250 and up for it.

I would like to finish it, too.

I've been wanting one of these for almost two years, when I first saw it on ebay *drools* It started at only $10, but by the time it sold, it was upwards of $200 I'd love to own one of these, but more realistically, I'll probably just make my own

I stumbled on this mini in '89 in a catalog, but by then it was out of production.

Finally, in 2004, I got one on eBay. Admittedly, I hadn't been actively searching for it. Eventually I added it to my 'favorite search' list on eBay, and a few months later one popped up.

I guess I lucked out, or it hadn't gotten as valuable as you folks in this thread have noted, 'cause I paid around $80 for it.

I may have to sell it, if it's in such demand...?

But only if I really need the money.

Davester - I can totally understand having to sell items from your collection. It's a very hard thing to do (I've done it) but it's nice to have things to fall back on like this when needed.
That was a very good price for the Bronze Dragon. I've bought two of them, and paid around $75 each, prior to 2004. I've not seen one for sale in a very long time tho.
