Default Collecting Highlight (30) - Pern Portfolio

This is a very rare item, limited to 300 copies which are hand numbered. There were 200 black and white stapled copies also, according to Hargreaves. The copyright page shows that Anne herself holds the copyright, June 1978. Editors are Anne Elizabeth Zeek, Pat Nolan and Jean L. Stevenson. The Forward was written by Anne McCaffrey.

This is the front cover

Jean L. Stevenson wrote music for 9 songs for woodwind and guitar. All of the lyrics are from Anne's books. (I don't play nor do I read music, so no idea how they would sound.) The songs are: Gathersong, Question Song, Menolly's Running Song, Menolly's Song for Petiron, The Hatching, 400 Turns "Between", Eastern Sea-Hold Song, Lullabye and Good-night and The Alarm Chorus.

The 'folio is chock full of fan fiction and art! It truly is amazing.

It is over 100 pages that are held together by a plastic slip-on type binder, 128 in fact. (I put some clear plastic sheets to protect the front and back cover pages, don't know why someone else didn't think to do that!) The pages are standard 8 1/2 X 11 inch size.

The cover is of the white dragon, Ruth, done in 4 colors. The back is a black and white drawing of a mating flight. There are two large drawings that fold out. They are larger than the rest of the pages and fold back in on themselves. They are pictured below.

Of special interest to at least one of our membership is a very touching fan fiction letter as written by Helva's mother and a very neat drawing of the Ship Who Sang.
This is the drawing that goes with the Helva letter. Rather well done, I think.

There is an article called "Some Observations On Mycorrhiza Stellarubris: A Preliminary Report" regarding the life cycle of Thread and how an infestation spreads. I don't think the information was gleaned from Anne, it's someone's conjecture. An artcile titled "Hrruban and Terran Formality" that also has an accompanying drawing of Todd (with tail) and a Hrruban. A lot of Pern articles - "First Alarm" about the man who wrote "The Alarm Chorus", "Desperate Flight" about a different Moreta and her flight, Canth's Choice" about a female impressing a bronze dragon, to name a few.

I have several of the Crystal Singer Fanzines and am finding that some of the articles in the fanzines are also in the Pern Portfolio. The same people are involved with both and articles were submitted to both by the same person.

It was pricey, but I've never seen another for sale before so had to have it. I don't know how much they sold for originally. Well worth the price to me tho.

Fascinating! The artwork isn't exactly what I would call accurate, but I'm dead curious to read those articles, especially the one about Thread, conjecture or not! I'd also LOVE to hear how that music sounds.

I'm still dying of jealousy over here Becky, since you up and bought the only one that's been available for years! And now that I know more about the contents, I'm drooling even more! You realize you're going to have share some the articles with us, and give more info about the contents, right? It's your sacred duty as the only MoM member that owns a copy!

Hans, thank you! I have a new camera and actually used the Macro feature to take the pictures. I'd never have known it but for a tv show I watched a few nights before I got the Portfolio. It was actually about taking pictures of your house valuables with a digital camera but the Macro segment really helped me with taking a better picture. Especially since you take it without a flash, so no glare! (you just have to be sure that there's a LOT of light around the item.)

Hmm, wonder if I could learn some new tricks -- what was the program and what channel was it on? Perhaps they'll be re-airing it!

LOL, Spiff, didn't mean to be, but I just now got home and have some house things to do yet and I'm leaving right after work tomorrow. Won't be home till Sunday afternoon. I'll get them done, just don't know when.

Cheryl, I had just gotten some new HD channels on tv and was watching the Home & Garden channel in HD (HGHD) and was up at 11:30 that night. I can't remember the name of it and haven't seen it since, so I'm not sure if it was some sample type of thing or not. I'm just glad I stayed up and watched it and learned that bit about the macro. Maybe if you get HGTV or HGHD you can watch it off and on during the day and catch it, or search the tv guide to find it. Sorry I'm not much help, but if you want to know how to use the macro I'm happy to share.

Ok, I finally got the pages of the Thread story ready for email. I just took pictures of the pages and I do think they are legible enough to read so can email them to whoever wants a copy of it. I don't want to infringe on any copyrights so email is how you'll get it.

Just PM me with your email address if you want a copy. I'm sending copies to those who have already expressed interest in receiving it in this thread.

Hope that the article is worth it to you and you enjoy it!

I forgot to post pictures of the Contents page so here is the page and also a closeup so that you can actually see what it says. The border is nicely done tho the dragon legs remind me of elephants.

Hmmmm, I'm guessing that I might just as well take a picture of each page of the thing. Probably a good idea to have them stored on my computer anyway. I didn't think you'd be able to read the type on the content page very well with the picture of the whole page, but it turned out really well and you can read it.
Lily, I'll try to get pictures taken of the story and the picture for you soon. I'll PM you to let you know and you can send me your email address for the story.

Becky, I am so thrilled that you bought this publication...and then sent me my copy of "The Letter", it is the most lovely story concerning Helva, that I have read since Anne wrote hers. I wish I had about a week to read through this jewel you have added to your collection. Count me as another drooler on the site.. .................

Yahoo, Hans!!!! So where did you find your copy???

Oh, if anyone happens to find a 'spline' (that's the black thing holding the thing together) that would fit about a half inch thick sheaf of papers let me know, please! The spline on my copy is breaking apart and I can't find one anywhere! Been to Staples, Office Max and Office Depot. The only splines I find are ones for small reports. No one has them for thicker items. So I'd be grateful for any leads on one for my 'folio.

Thanks!

This is an addendum to the Pern Portfolio and is also being posted as a new thread in the collectors forum...........

I have been most fortunate to run across another copy of the Pern Portfolio!! BUT, this one is a bit different than the original one. I'm wondering if this new copy could be some sort of proof copy? Please let me know your thoughts.
I am calling the new copy 'proof' to distinguish it from my other 'original' copy.

The proof cover is not as complete as the original one. It's not entirely colored in and the colors are in different areas too. The paper is the same heavy stock as the original one tho.

Photo of new proof cover. (Sorry for the glare. I thought about redoing the picture but the glare looks like flame so I left it in. )

Photo of both covers.

There are a couple of differences in the layout of the first pages also.

The copyright page, where the copy number is listed in the original, is blank on the proof. Pages are printed on both sides throughout both copies. So the proof is printed on one side exactly like the original but blank on the back.

In the proof the Table of Contents page is the page before the Dedication page, so the back (right side of paper) of another printed page. In the original the Table of Contents page is a few pages later and the front page (left side) of the paper.

The Dedication page in the original has an introduction by one of the editors after it. In the proof there is the Forward by Anne McCaffrey after the Dedication page. In the original the Forward is just before the Table of Contents.

These two pictures show the difference of what is printed before the first article titled For Love of Dragons. The articles and art pages are the same for both proof and original copy. It is just the beginning pages that are different in their printed order.

Drawings in the original are on heavyish pastel colored paper but in the proof drawings are on the same paper as the rest of the Portfolio. The proof does not have the same backing as the original. Original has a drawing on heavy stock and the proof has heavier colored paper instead.

I also found a photocopy of the Pern Portfolio and it is in the exact order of the original Pern Portfolio with no additions or omissions.

There's a Pern Portfolio (one of the most sought after Pern collectibles) for sale at eBay currently (June 2010) for a buy-it-now price of 249,95. Not saying it ain't worth it but...

http://cgi.ebay.nl/1978-PERN-PORTFOL...item563d1f98e2

It's a stapled version with a yellow tape over the spine.

Pet peeve .... must remember for next time .... when putting a bid in, that I've got to put in 6,00 not 6.00. Those commas and full stops on the Dutch ebay versus Aussie ebay can really make you think when you're not used to doing it that way
