Default Costume Suggestions

Hi all! I've always loved Halloween- fall is in the air. I'm considering going as a dragonrider this year (no weird face painting or fake blood required)- so I figure that I'll wear black jeans (they look like wherhide), a vest that I have that's really fleece but looks like a "bomber jacket" layered over a sweater or long-sleeved shirt. I hope that this costume will also work for the end-of-October chill here!

Do you think that dragonriders wear some type of hat or helmet? That would make sense. . . Does it go over the ears and tie under the chin like a "Peruvian-style" warm hat? Is it knitted or "leather"? Do you think that I need shoulder knots?

I also suggested to Macs (my service dog) that he accompany me as a firelizard, but he's very unsure about the wings. Any ideas for him that work for a dog's. . . figure?

Also, how do I keep folks from thinking that I'm a "WWI flying ace"?

Hmm...thats kinda hard to say.

You could ditch the hat, and wear goggles. That might help. The long -sleeved shirt sounds good. Id probably wear a cloak instead of vest, but a vest should go well.

Hmm. I dunno about Macs. Since he's a service dog, will putting anything on him distract him much? If not, then maybe something with a CLOSED WING design, over his back, that wont get in the way. Hehe...A shoulder dragon would help folks think yer NOT a WWI flying ace, if that helps.

And keeping the look a bit more medieval to mid century type..

Well, in the pics of the original dragon riders they do sorta look like WW1 fighter pilots but could you take that image and then corse it up a bit? Like make the stitches stand out more. The riders did wear hats, I remember that's why menolly cut her hair short. Though I'm not sure if there supposed to clip under the chin or not....I guess I'd thought they didn't though. Goggles would be good though. Could you have a "harness" over your shoulder? As if you and your pooch\dragon are on the way out for a ride?

If you use a rigid link to your dog; how about fastening a dragon wing to each side of it so he looks like he's got a pair of wings raised ready for flight, butr he's not REALY wearing them.

For inspiration, here are some dragonrider costumes we've at at Weyrfest in the past:
And if you've got a Dragonlover's Guide to Pern, there's an excellent illustration of a rider in one of the front sections.

That'd be Moreta, not Menolly, who kept her hair short for wearing under her riding helmet. The Robin Wood portrait of Moreta shows the helmet and goggles well:

Good ol' PoP.

Here's a few more from that book, of riders in gear (thanks to the infamous meus, who I'm sure is violating some kind of copyright by using these images, though they're low res):

And Moreta, the full image:

And if that's not enough for you to work with, I don't know what is!

Thank you,everyone!!

OK, it looks like the 2nd-hand shops here will defenitely be getting some business from me! I do wear my hair short, and it's curly like Moreta's, but not blond like hers. I think that I can pull this off (I've been a Pern fan for a while now), but never dressed up as a dragonrider!

One potential issue though: my pooch/dragon dislikes his wings- besides everyone'll think that he's either Dracula or Batman. In the afternoon sun, he does have nifty glowing eyes like a dragon, though. One idea that I came up with for him is yhat he can wear a cover, like a blanket, over his back with wings drawn on it. The teeth and tail he has down!!

What do you thinK?

That would work if he does not like to wear wings. You might be able to use a puffy pant so they stick out just a little.

Ah: Amelia Earhart was an early pioneer flyer. Amelia Bearheart was Moira's teddybear in The Ship who searched.

Those are great costumes. The dragon Rider's hat looks like the soft leather skull cap WWII pilots wore.

was the entire outfit leather? I see the jacket is a suead, were the pants as well?

As for the dog and his wings. How about some super lightweight wings that kids wear sometimes? They look like fairy or bytterfly wings. Halloween stores may have other tpes that cna be painted to look like a dragon's wing.
Those can be attched to the harness and won't be heavy. make sure to smear his scent on them so he's ok with it.;-)
