Unhappy Out of print books

Unfortunately, I got into the series after some books went out of print and I can't find them anywhere. I've heard there was a klah recipie in "The Dragonlover's Guide to Pern" (and would greatly appreciate it if someone could tell me what it is because I'd really love to try it ), but what else am I missing out on?

Hi, Lavallia! Here is the Klah recipe from my DLGP (2nd Ed.):

Mix together:

2 Tablespoons sweet ground chocolate
1/2 cup dark cocoa
3/8 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon dark instant coffee crystals, ground to powder
small pinch of nutmeg

Use two to four teaspoons of the (above) mixture per cup of boiling water. Stir well. The klah should be thick, much like hot cocoa.
[Sweeten to taste]

Wow, that's unbelieveable Bob! Surely we'd've heard if they were going to do a reprint? from somewhere? If you're going to peek to see if it's a reprint, could you peek to find out the price? The DLGs floating around ebay might go down in price...

In the US there are 2 editions of the DLG, the 1st and the 2nd. The 2nd edition is available on amazon in paperback form.

Alibris.com

This is a good place to try and find out of print books. (Used)

I've ordered several here and have found some really good ones that were out of print and I couldn't find elsewhere

Thank you all so much! I'll have to check more bookstores, I didn't know there was a second edition. My grandparents tried to get me a copy for Christmas this year, but were told it was out of print. Thanx again!

Glad to - I'll try to get by there tomorrow (Thursday). I'll let you know that and the price. In the meantime, it's on their website at:

http://search.barnesandnoble.com/boo...WRD=Pern&SRT=R

with a price of 18.95 USD and a publish date of March 1997.

Well, the copy they had on the shelf has been sold. According to their computer system, they have between 75 and a hundred available nationwide (US) in their distribution centers. The lady I spoke to said that is a fairly small number. In any case, here's what their system showed on it:

Dragonlover's Guide to Pern, 2nd Edition
Large size paperback
Published March 1997 by Random House
ISBN: 0345412745
Cost: $18.95 (USD)

I get all my Dragonriders books at Borders book store. In-print or Out-of-print.
They have fair prices and you can order most of the out-of-print books there. I have one book coming and I ordered The People of Pern from there.

I had to pay alot but my book was sposed to be used and it looked brand new! It was in perfect condition. That is the only price I found a little outragous for Borders but the old owner set the price. It was about $50.94 or somewhere around there.

I've been asking around and checking stores and can't figure out a couple of things in this recipe. Is the 'dark cocoa' the kind that comes in the little plastic box or is it the little packets of hot cocoa mix? And, is the 'sweet ground chocolate' a ground up chocolate bar or what exactly? I'm so clueless

I just got back from Anchorage, Alaska, B&N and they had one copy of the new 2nd edition of DLG. It was $18.95 USD and according to the clerk they have plenty in the warehouse. (where ever that is) She said any store can get it for you just ask. You may, however, have to wait for them to order it but its still available.

I checked on abebooks: they have editions ranging from $4.50 to a first ed. of $250.

Check it out for the other titles that you're looking for, and see what comes up; there may be something to your taste.

Dark cocoa usually means unsweetened cocoa powder. Personally I've had good luck with Hershey's Dutch Process version (which also adds a nice red tinge to the klah.) I've heard some people actually use ground-up milk chocolate bar for the sweet ground cocoa, which I guess is okay if you're a total sugar freak and don't mind the fatty texture from the cocoa butter (personally I think it sounds disgusting.) I prefer, if I use anything sweet at all besides white or raw sugar to taste, Ghiardelli's sweet ground cocoa powder, which is sweetend, but IIRC unlike hot cocoa mixes doesn't contain milk powders.

My own personal klah comes out more like this:

Dutch process cocoa powder
Sugar to taste
Cinnammon, nutmeg, and clove (to taste--easy on the clove unless you know you like the flavor.)
Strong black coffee (fresh-brewed)

Mix the cocoa powder, sugar, and spices. Place about a tablespoon in a mug, and add hot coffee. Adjust sweetness with sugar to taste, add milk if desired.

I just went into my bookstore and ordered the DLG 2nd Ed. and had no problems, that was last year. I didn't know it was out of print now. The only Pern books I can't get my hands on through my bookstore is the Atlas of Pern and People of Pern.

Sweet ground chocolate I always thought was those big chunks of plain cholate you can get at the store, but not packaged chocolate bars. My klah recipe is pretty much exactly the same as Anareth's.

I have a first edition People of Pern. Don't know how much $ it would be to send it to you. I could trade you for a copy of Masterharper of Pern. I don't have that one yet. I bought my copy PoP when it was first released. It's in beautiful condition. LMK.
