So far its taken two of us two-and-a-half hours to get half way through it.

She is suffering from a scalp exzema and the doctor having tried anti-biotics (which didn't work) yesterday prescribed a tube of some gunk which we had to work into her scalp adn leave overnight.

We ain't using it again!

It's taken her mother and me (in relays mostly) three and a half hours to shampoo it out and detangle the mop.

Her mother had HER hair cropped to a ear length bob against her will when she was about ten. Now she's a bit paranoid about short hair on girls.

Hope the tangles weren't TOO painful to get out. I still remember getting my hair tangled up in whatever I was playing in when I was little, and I always resisted any efforts on my mother's part to comb it out (I was a wee bit of a tomboy)

Peter, She is such a lovely little girl, even with that unbelievable mop of hair. I hope that all that combing out of her hair didn't hurt her. I agree I wouldn't put that stuff back in her hair either...but I agree with Lily a short hair cut might get her through this bad patch with her hair a lot easier. Good Luck!!

scalp's one of the few places I don't get excema!

I can't see how length of hair would make much difference except for if you have to use the gunk again!

Still, you won't need to worry about a 21st Birthday photo!
hope the excema gets well soon- I'm itching in sympathy!

P'ter, is the doctor sure it is excema? Couldn't it be a fungal infection, like I had? That was plenty itchy! The doc here had me on Lamisil cream for my scalp...and it never caused those tangles!

It's definitely NOT fungal. It took so long because we took it very slowly in small sections and using lots of conditioner. Then we rinsed the conditioner out.

We're working on it each day from now on. When it's better I'll take an "after" photo and post it.

Poor baby! My sympathies go out to you and her Mum as well! My own daughter has extremely thick, extremely curly hair and we had some issues with it over the years. My granddaughter's hair is blond and not quit as thick or curly but it still causes tears and rages occasionally. Tell that little love that even under that "tosseled" look, she's a beautiful child!

A woman after my own heart. For some weird reason I had my mom cut my hair in a bob when I was ten or so, and because my hair is very thick, it poofed out in a murshroom cap. I looked ridiculous. Since then, shoulder length has been minimum for me. However, I have never had any kind of behead resembling THIS! Thank goodness the eczema-like rash I get occasionally has never ventured to my scalp....Good luck with that one.

I've found my thick, dead-straight, slipperty hair can ONLY be kept tidy when its long- something to do with the sheer weight I think.

Mine can only resemble tidy when it's long too; it's thick and fairly curly.
I convinced my mother to let me cut my hair into a bob when I was about ten too... The silly things we do when we're young!

Eucerin is a fantastic product for the hair and skin. Also for soap - use Dove White (if you can find it) this is not the "unscented" one. All 4 of my children have exzema so they can only use this soap. It was recommended by their doctor and since we started using it their skin has cleared up tremendously. My 7 year old gets exzema in her ears and that is a tough one! Also what might help is to just wash her hair every other day or so - less drying on the scalp.

Just some suggestions.....

I used that for a time- I use Carex antiseptic liquid stuff now when I remember!

I was about to recommend a washing powder- but I'v remembered that it's a small UK based company.

I have trouble with moisturisers so I keep swapping between plain creams- any colour or unnatural scent and it burns! I've discovered that Nivea and Atrixo are good to carry around as they're more portable than most.

Eurcerin worked wonders last year- the excema cleared up relatively quickly.

My fine, curly hair is actually easier to control when it's shorter. Too hard to deal with when long, and usually by the time I finish brushing it out its frizzed up.

What a cute girl!

I really, really hope that when she's 12 or 15, she'll get a rebellious phase and get her hair cut! I detest it when parents treat their kids as they themselves would've liked to be treated, without asking if the kid wants to have long hair.

My hair is thick, but it's rough. I get horrible eczema whenever it grows longer than my jawline, because it's so hard to rinse out shampoo and conditioner and the remnants always seem to cause trouble. I can avoid that by keeping my hair relatively short. You can avoid the mushroom look on thick hair by thinning it in layers from underneath (to keep the top smooth), as my hairdresser does. Even if she cuts the length by only an inch or so when I go, I still leave 3/4 of my hair on the hairdresser's floor, it's all in the thickness.

My hair is so thick that I get a panic when I can see the scalp underneath just after a haircut. Normally I can only do that, even in the parting, when it's wet. That's how thick my hair is.

Well, if the water pressure's anything like most of Europe, I'm not surprised. Here the water pressure is such that if you put the shower on full, it's liable to leave your hands unless you have a vice-like grip. The problem is rather that my hair is thick and my fingers are short (like those of the average eleven year old, but wider), that I just can't reach the scalp when my hair is both long and thick. When it gets heavy, the hair also lies against the scalp and the damp and warm conditions are ideal for all kinds of nasty fungi and bacteria. Especially since I need a hat at least six months of the year. So no more long hair for me.

Ask the doctor about giving her Vitamin E supplements. I don't have eczema, but I do suffer from extremely dry skin. Taking a Vitamin E supplement every day has cut down on the itching a bit, and totally stopped the nosebleeds.

And yes, she's cute, but if this gunk works, I'd cut her hair short and use it until her eczema gets better. Then let her hair grow out again.

Hair will usually grow back. (unless you're a man prone to male pattern baldness.) Isn't short hair worth the relief that she'll feel if you can get rid of the eczema?

Shalyn: I'd have cut her hair short weeks ago, but her mother, bless her, has a thing about doing her psychological damage if she has short hair. I think it's a load of balony, but I'm only Grandad.

well my hair was short until I was about 10, shoulder length until I was 13 then short until I was 19. It's now most've the way down my back- my choice- and I find it easier to manage long- It was orginally cut short to keep it tidy but its easier to keep tidy now its long.
Having short hair when I was little was perfectly fine- and I had the choice what to do with it when I was older.
Never did me any psychological damage! Honest!
