A snail-mail card ? - although I doubt we have enough time to send it round the world to get everyone's real life signatures in time A special poem by our resident poet? A picture by someone artistic?

Suggestions please

the only way a snail mail card would work is if we all sent a message to someone to stick in a card!

or we could scan in messages I suppose!

Or a card from each of us, sent to one person, then forwarded to Anne as one?

Oh, C_ris, I like that idea! A bunch of collated text messages from Anne's fans wouldn't be easy on the eyes, but a collection of colorful cards would be fun to look at. We ought to be able to collect 80 cards for Anne's 80th, don't you think?

I am happy to volunteer to collect the cards and pay the postage to send them on to Anne. I'll get details put up in the next couple of weeks in a forum viewable by MoM members only (address, date cards must be recieved by).

Count me in!

I will be going for something a bit Australian, so that she can know we read her down here.

Would you like me to write a poem as well, for all of us here, to be sent along as a scroll/present?

ciao!

Well.......as Anelli has already volunteered (stupid girl!, didn't I always tell you never volunteer for anything!? ) and as she is in europe, if everyone posts them to her, the postal costs to Anne (hopefully) wouldn't be too much.
I'm sure a couple of us could chip in a bit towords it, if it gets expencive, eh?

Regional collections would be great if we have volunteers; hosts have first dibs on that. But part of the problem is that anyone collecting has to give out an address to people. I'm going to be using a PO Box rather than my personal address.

Ghyle -- I was assuming you'd just be writing one from yourself actually.

I think self-made cards from those with artistic talent is great, but those of us without sufficient talent are welcome to buy cards.

I'm not creative, but my mother is. She paints. So she could make me a card if I asked kindly enough.

I'll start work on the "official" poem later today, and post it up in this thread for comments.

OK, I'm the odd one out?

Why collect cards from us all when we can send our own? Don't see any need for collecting cards and then send them on.

Having/sending her something from us all from MoM, that sound great. I can see one of those extra-extra large cards (they sell here; 4 times letter size) with pictures or little memo's from us all glued in it), but a bunch of cards forwarded... sorry, I just don't see the extra/added value in that but maybe I'm missing something?

Alternative: she loves flowers; maybe kind of a chip in for sending her a real bouquet?

Here's an idea: my mum, also an Anne fan, but offline, loves to paint flowers. She could possibly paint Anne's favourite for us, if we ask her asap, get it framed, and sent along with whatever card or cards that we send.

If we do send one big card, maybe Lady Maelin might be a good person to make it, as she is creative, and artistically minded. The problem with the one card, of course, is getting all the signatures together, and all the messages, unless we have them sent in separately on paper, etc., and they are glued (or whatever) to the card itself.

I agree with Hans - if we're all sending individual cards, then it doesn't make sense for them to be collected regionally first, just adds to the expense And Anne's address is no secret, it's printed on the back of the MHoP CD for starters

My original thought was to take something collectively from the MoM members, but I really don't think we have time to send a card round the world and get it back to me in time But maybe there's some mileage in the idea of a giant card in which we can paste messages from us all? And if someone artistic could make it then that would be even better Not me, I can't draw to save my life But maybe someone else can, and perhaps ghyle could write the "verse" to go in it?

Lady Maelin, a big card is exactly that: a gigantic, oversized single card with enough room for the well-wishes of all of us to go upon it. Think of an ordinary greeting card, and compare it to a sheet of cardboard. Is the idea a bit clearer?

We're not settled yet on what we're going to do, so I've closed the poll for now...I got overly enthusiastic last night.

Let's keep discussion going on pros and cons of the ideas that have come forward:

1. Collection of cards mailed en masse
2. HUGE card (I've seen them at least 12x24 inches at my local store), with small messages/pictures pasted in from each of us
3. Flower delivery
4. Poem by Resident Poet Ghyle
5. Painting by Ghyle's Mum
6. A Keepsake Binder with a collection of emails/poems/ printouts of artwork
7. ? Keep the ideas coming, number new ones to make for easier discussion

1. Card Collection -- Seems silly in some regards as everyone could individually mail cards. On the flip side, I think Anne might be tickled to open a packet/small box to find a large stack of colorful/unique/personally-chosen-or-crafted cards inside and it would save opening that many envelopes individually. She is certain to get a lot of fan mail for her birthday this year as we're certainly not the only ones to have figured out what # it is for her, so I personally wouldn't underestimate the value of a single packet over individually sent cards, but that's just one person's opinion.

2. HUGE card -- this idea intrigues me, and I've always wanted an excuse to buy one of the huge cards at my local store but the cards they stock have never seemed to fit the bill for events/people I've bought cards for before. Some logistical issues in determining allotted space for everyone to make sure we don't overfill or underfill the card.

3. Flower delivery -- I like the idea of sending her flowers on a personal basis, but I guess this one seems silly to me to do as a group. We could all pitch in a few $ via PayPal, but then PayPal fees would chew up as much as a third of the donated money and that's just silly. A smaller few of us (very small few, like 5-10) could donate larger amounts but then to me that doesn't seem like a gift representative of all the members of MoM. I'd really like an idea that everyone can contribute to individually--or not by their own choice. Something inexpensive, and with waste of expenses being kept to a minimum.

4. Poem by Ghyle -- I think this will be done no matter whatever else we decide upon! Ghyle's already got a draft, which I moved to a new topic for separate discussion.

5. Paiting by Ghyle's Mom -- I see the same issues with this that I see with #3. It doesn't represent contributions from all of us, except perhaps in the form of monetary donations for framing and postage. If Ghyle's mom is so moved to produce and send something on her own, or a small artwork that can be included in a card collection or with a huge card, that sounds better to me.

Okay, enough of my opinions, share your ideas and opinions!

In relation to #5, the physical painting doesn't need to be paid for by us all. My mum would, I am sure be glad to negotiate a deal whereby the whole thing will be donated (at best), or else the cost of equipment and framing asked for (at worst)--depending upon how much time, what she is asked to paint, the medium and size, etc. I have no problem in paying directly for the freight costs, and wouldn't mind if I'm not recompensed.

It should be in addition to any card or cards that we send.

In relation to #1, I support this myself over the large card, as it allows each of us, on our own initiative, to personalise both the card and the messages within it. We would have more room per card, and, I am sure, you may want to add greetings that are longer than just a circumsribed limit. It would also avoid a ramshackle appearance of so many pasted messages, which may easily fall off in time.

These are my thoughts for the moment.

A Keepsake Binder with a collection of emails/poems/ printouts of artwork. One person could easily put that all together, as long as they have a decend printer. That way, Anne has a nice NEAT collection from her adoring fans here at MoM.

I like the idea of the giant card. It wouldn't be to hard to set a form (on here?) that we all fill in with our wishes, that could then be printed off and then stuck into the card. - Although I realise that someone is going to have to do the hard work on that.

Although - I do agree with Cheryl about the package containing cards from MoM, or some sort of binder with them all in. That too could be very nice, and lets face it very different.

In combination with a poem and/or painting that would be a nice gift to give someone who has, lets face it, given us quite a lot.

I personally would be happy to chip in something via Paypal.

I like AnnMarie's idea of collecting scaned or emailed items(notes, drawing, pictures, poems, songs, jokes) or anything else that someone wants to send to her that can be sent on the computer, and then downloaded and put together and sent in a nice binder, notebook for her to look at and read from all of us. Somthing like that, maybe?

I like AnnMarie's idea as well--it's another one that shows personal touches from all of us. It could also probably be combined with a card collection if we wanted -- people could send a card or something to go in the binder.

How soon would we need to get things ready, so we could add our cards or whatever to the pile? Would we be mailing them overland or by E-Mail?

Anne's birthday is April 1st. I think March 15th would make a good deadline for collecting items to get them prepped and sent in time to arrive for then.

Until we decide for sure what we're doing, we don't know if it'll be collected overland or via email...

I checked with my mum, and she said that since she'll be unable to find the time, due to building work and other problems, she won't be able to make a painting for us. Which is a pity. But better to know now than too late, no?

Cheryl, Hans, how well do you know if Anne loves doll fins?

Think she only loves the real thing, Ghyle; doing research for the book she went to a center in Florida it was, I think, and swam with real ones. At her house you'll see dragons and cats everywhere but not a dolphin in sight. That's not meant as a joke, I mean no pictures, paintings, stutuettes etc.

The reason I mentioned flowers is that she wanted to especially visit me to see the Keukenhof (Tulip Fields) and from conversations I know she loves her garden and flowers.
