That's not a printing number, it's a...hmm, not sure right now what that's called.
At any rate, the copies are not numbered; that's not always done with limited editions, sometimes they are numbered but sometimes they are not.

What Cheryl said, the limitation is indicated (wasn't that done in felt pen?) but the individual books are not numbered.
I think the end paper/boards are bronze (printed); quite unusual, a metal colour inside a book.

Hi everyone,
The McCaffrey bibiography was only 500 copies. After they were numbered and all sold out, the remaining copies were destroyed. The same was done with the Charles De Lint book I published - The Riddle of the Wren, and for The MinoTaur Trilogy by Thomas Burnett Swann. In the case of the Swann book I still have brand new copies left over. The point being is the limitation statement is accurate. In the 90's at least one publisher was found to be double numbering their "limited" editions. So if there 2000 numbered, there were now 4000 copies out there. Hence they lied and the editions value on the collector market was zero. The copper colored endpapers are a paper that was manufactured that way. Ufortunately for the book the copper coloring can scuff. Had I known this I would have had the copper side plastic laminated. The fiction books I published had illustrated endpapers and they were laminated to prevent the scuffing. If you are also lucky, keep an eye out for the paperbound update I did a couple years later when Anne was the GOH in Canada, I think for a Westercon. Due to finacial stress I may be forced to sell my collection. Though I would not piece it out. I would prefer to sell it intact. BTW, Mathew in my case is spelled with oane "t". CHEERS...Mathew Hargreaves |

Mathew, I probably have typed your name wrong often
![]() I, too, want to use the opportunity to thank you for what we Dutch call "a monk's work", a helluva job. And I know as I am still in the process to complete your work by adding to it while building on your sturdy fundament. Would you be interested in corrections? While going through Anne's books at her home I found mail from you (CD with cover art a.o. things); are you still updating your data and if yes, for all languages or just English? Side question: not so long ago an uncorrected proof/book without cover and endpapers of 40 Years was offered on eBay. Any idea how many of those are going around? It might it mean that maybe a few of the surplus were not destroyed?

Hi everyone,
Well the computer just ate my last reply as I finished it. Sigh. I also could not remember my password. Advancing decrepitude is hell! Thank you for the compliments. I know the book helped a lot of people and preserved the knowledge for others. It was a learning experience for me and driven by my appreciation of Dragonsong and Dragonsinger. It was certainly a vastly better item than that Ghastly limited edition I copublished of "Habit is an Old Horse". What a horror story that was back then. I also printed the book in case anyone cares. A year or two back I told Anne it was the emotional descriptions for each character that made them live. The title of her non-fiction article "tell a Story and Feel It" sums it up for the writer. However - Read a Story and Feel it - is what makes them live in us as readers. The bibliography took ten years to complete. Once it was completed there was nothing left in me. It took a lot of effort to assemble the update a couple years later. After that I could not read anything by her for a long time. There was one book I was waiting for someday to appear. When Pegesus in Flight arrived I was right there. I had changed and was doing other things. But once recharged the research for two more history books started. After fifteen years I am now doing the product photography for them. The hot one covers the manufacturing history of vacuum coffee makers. Most people like or drink coffee. Until now, the long period it encompasses has not been told. The other volume will cover Toaster service sets from 1932 to 1955 but also cover the history of the Popup Toaster from 1918 to some undetermined ending date. Sorry, no flying toasters had dragonwings or could go between. While all of this is going on I am still buying her books. But, I had changed as a reader and researcher. I found history books more interesting. And, fiction reading fell away for me. The other author I kept up on is Charles De Lint but the same problem - I have read them. I also have yet to put up a website on Thomas Burnett Swann. I have everything he wrote and have prmission to place it all up for the public to read. I also have family supplied photos to use. It will be kept simple as it really is about the writing and preserving them for future readers. Time for a chocolate chip cookie... CHEERS...Mathew |

Darn, the paperbound versions of the bibliography are the same paper contents as the hardcover. They were overrun designated for review copies and lacking the frills of the boards and signature sheets. There were about 25 to 30 of them. They are not uncorrected proofs.
CHEERS...Mathew |

Wow, Mathew!! Thank you so very much for all your information! I have two copies of the book one.....like Hans......I use to mark (very lightly in pencil) what I already own and the other is a copy that Anne gave to Radcliffe! Both copies are treasures and all your hard work is greatly appreciated!
Sorry to hear you may have to sell your collection....would that I could give you an offer for it all because I would in a heartbeat!

Mathew, I would also like to send my appreciation for all of you hard work! I own two copies, one that is getting worn out from use, the other to keep in nice shape for the future. It has been indispensible in helping me find (and know what I have found) those elusive, little known/hard to find gems.

Samsara, I think I'm going to sell my second copy of 40 years to pay for my book collecting hobby and the Two more years. Although, I'd like to have two! The only reason I bought it was to get the Two More Years which I couldn't find by itself (other than the $185 on bookfinder). Sadly, I listed it on ebay so I'll have to see if it sells. I'm just going to keep the other copy nice and write in Becky's and Phil S-P Guides.
