MAJOR finds(s) for my Collection!!

As a collector, I have often dreamed about making that one REALLY exciting find whilst browsing through my local second hand bookstore. You know, that really special kind of find that you think will never happen to you? I have often had this dream.... and this weekend it actually came true!!

I can now say I am the proud owner of a 1st Ed, 1st printing, HC Rapp & Whiting Dragonflight, and a 1st ed, 1st print, HC Sidgwick & Jackson Dragondrums!!!!!



I was 'guided' towards these beautiful books by our very own Hans... ....after I asked him to check out an ex library copy of Dragonflight I had found for sale. I had gotten kind of excited, because even though it wasn't a great copy, I really just wanted to have one of my own. Well, Hans know this story, but he said the book looked awful and provided me a link to one he had found for sale in Australia.... I couldn't believe it! In Australia???? Well I jumped straight on line to have a look, and nearly fell out my chair when I found that it was not ONLY just in Australia, it was in Western Australia, Perth to be exact... and not only that, but it was in a suburb not 15 mins drive from house!!!!!!
Needless to say, I phoned the seller immediately and arranged to go around to his place the next day. I had asked him on the phone if he had anything else, and he told me no, but when I got there, he presented me with the Dragondrums as well! BONUS!!!!!! He gave me a great deal on the 2 books and I walked away (assisted by my Hubby, as I was close to fainting!) very happy indeed! So.... thank you Hans because I wouldn't have found them without your help, you advice and guidance has been wonderful!

The books themselves are in really good condition. Dragonflight was an ex lib at some point but all markings etc.. have been proffessionally removed. There remains only very faint evidence of its ex lib status on the inside of the book, and none on the outside. The DJ is a little scruffy around the edges, but overall pretty good.







Dragondrums is not an ex lib and is in excellent condition:




I never thought to get so lucky and find this copy of Dragonflight! Two days ago it was a mere pipe dream, now it is sitting on my very own bookshelf! I'm as happy as a girl can be!

And there is a lesson to be learned here. If I had not asked Hans for his advice, I would have purchased an terrible copy for more then I paid for this one. My excitement and impatience would have cost me money and book quality! So MY advice? MoM is full of wonderful people who know a lot about collecting, so slow down, and ask for help because it really pays off!

There's always someone around here who is willing to help out Cool finds though I found that out with Dragonsong - found it in a library book sale at a reasonable price and I didn't know that it was a 1st edition until a collecting highlight or one of Hans' "guess what I found?" came up and I went woohoo! So there's a few clever people around here who know what they're on about! So CONGRATS on a great find!

Yay! I get a point for the assist

Congratulations on two great purchases and collectors items. The Dragondrums looks pristine and for an ex library the Dragonflight isn't bad at all. Besides, who wouldn't expect a FORTY year old book that has been used and hasn't been locked away in a (collector's) bookcase, to show signs of use! So, seen in that light, it looks great.

Those are great books! I went hunting this weekend around Pittsburgh, PA but wasn't as lucky! I went to three stores and only found an over priced copy of Atlas of Pern which I didn't buy. Thank you so much for sharing and the pics! Well Done!

How much over price, and what kind of conditon? For I am looking for a good copy of Atlas of Pern. Its one book I don't have yet.
