Default My latest project

I've decided to post a couple of pictures of my latest project. Thanks to the encouragement of our dear Lady Maelin, I picked up pencil and paper again. After about 6 years I decided to draw again. It's my parents 50th wedding anniversary this coming August so I decided that a portrait would be a good thing. The photo was taken back in 1999 just before my son got married and we were at his apartment playing cards and this picture just sort of happened. It was a special time for us and I adore this picture of them.

This is the first picture I took of the drawing two weekends ago. I am only working on this during my lunch hour at work, so about 30 minutes a day.

I took this picture on Sunday, yesterday. I didn't work on it this weekend, like I said only on my lunch hours. But I did get about a two hour stint with it last Wednesday. I had a flat tire at work and it took about that long for someone to come change the tire. So I worked on the portrait while my boss read a book. Not a great day for me, but it was great for working on the portrait.

It's still a work in progress. And I know I've got to work on Dad's mouth and Mom's hand, but comments and suggestions always welcome.

First reaction was a simple: wow

And apart from the things that obviously still need work the only thing I cn find that I can comment on/ask about is: is your father's neck muscle a little too pronounced or is the picture just not clear enough to show the detail needed?

Thanks for all the support everyone! It's certainly a project that has a lot of love in it. With this being their 50th anniversary I couldn't think of anything to get them. Then a couple of emails with Lady Maelin gave me the inspiration, along with a couple of phone chats with my parents.

Hans - I'm thinking that the neck muscle is exagerated in the photo a little, part too is the shading of the rest of his neck may not be right. I'll check into it. Thanks! This is why I posted the portrait. More eyes to find errors or omissions.

Sandi - I drew the picture of Anne that's on the Collector's Guide for Anne's books that I did, too. And that's posted in the collecting section of the forum. So if you've read about the Guide then you've seen the picture of Anne.

Sandi - no apologies necessary! I really wouldn't expect you to remember about the Guide picture. But had to put that in so folks can go see it too. (can we say a plug opportunity???)

Maelin, Allana and Granath - thank you for the wonderful words! They will encourage me to do the best I can. I'll have an updated picture posted soon!

Thanks everyone for the 'Wow's. I am glad you all like it. I've made some minor adjustments to my dad's cheek, it'a bit too round and I like it better and also gave him some thicker hair today. Worked on Mom's sleeve too. Then it will be adding the background. So maybe by this coming weekend I can put a picture of it completed!
Next project will be my inlaws.

Ok, here's the completed portrait! Not bad for not having a pencil in my hand for about 6 years, if I do say so myself. I've been staring at it so much and see so many things wrong with it, but I think it's a fairly good likeness of them. Thanks again for all your encouragement!

Yes, I'm matting and framing it for them too. I've got my uncle who is going to check out what color mat would be best and what type of frame. But I'm leaning toward a green mat and an oak frame based on what I know of their house, tho they've moved since I last saw them a couple years ago.

Becky, Very very nice...I think your parents are going to be very surprised and happy that you took so much of your time to create this for them. I knew that you could do it if you put your mind to it, especially on something that you were really interested in doing. Can't wait to see the next one

Maelin, I'm thinking it will be my inlaws. Just have to find a decent picture of them. Don't want to do it of them now but a few years ago, like I did my parents.
Thanks everyone, glad you like the picture! I'm pretty happy with it and I'm pretty sure they will be too.

The matting is actually a dark green suede, the color doesn't come thru on the picture unfortunately.
The frame was actually silver in color and I put some gold paint around all but the inner part of the frame. Did it rather quickly and tried to leave some of the silver showing thru the gold paint. Glad you think it looks good!

Maelin - I'm looking forward to the next project too. I'm reading a book at the present and will start my next project in a couple of weeks.

This picture is a very rare thing, let me tell you. That's why I love it so much. It's them to a T, but when you get a camera out you can't catch them being themselves.
Bonnie - you think I look like my mom, eh? I've always considered myself daddy's girl. I think I look just like him. But I'm glad that you can see my mom in me too.
