Default Did I find one of the elusive Canadian editions?

Maybe some of you, and certainly the collectors, know about the often mentioned 'Canadian Editions' of printings that never seem to exist.

Well... yesterday evening I was video chatting with Lady Maelin and we were also discussing things we might wanted to trade. I asked her if she had a Dell paperback of The Kilternan Legacy, as I managed to buy two because of bad memory She said no and that she would like the book.

Later I looked closer at both books to ensure that both were first editions and to decide which one would stay with me and which one was to go to Lady maelin.

I opened the first book and read the copyright page. Yes, a true first edition mmp:

Then I opened the other one and read... and though "Huh?"

"Printed in Canada / First Printing - December 1975"? I went back to the first one and indeed, that said "Printed in the United States of America / First Printing - December 1975".
Did I foind one of the elusive Canadian Editions? Granted, it is not published but merely printed elsewhere, still it is the only difference between the two books, they even have the same ISBN!

Lady Maelin, the one printed in the United States is your copy

I still don't have a copy of that one at all, so I envy you both. I'm working on building my Anne collection but I can't afford to buy too much at a time. At least today I finally got a copy of Black Horses for the King!

Sandi, don't worry about not having a copy of something. You'll find the ones you need eventually. And once you've got them all then what will you do? I've taken time off from collecting and it's kind of sad. The hunt is so exciting and not hunting is just no fun at all. So to me it's nice to have things to look for.

Hans - I've got several Canadian editions of books. I'll have to check them to be sure of what I've got. Are you wanting Canadian editions?

ROFL, Hans!

It's nice to have it confirmed that there really are some Canadian editions, as I've never seen them, and since Hargreaves casts some doubt on their existance.

Well, the following photos should eliminate any doubts about canadian printings.......

First up, just for Hans.......

And second, again for Hans.......since it contains Weyr Search....

The 'Printed in Canada' is at the bottom of the page, in addition to being stamped on the cover.

And for our Crystal Singer lovers (waves to Pam).........

Then there's......

Those are all the ones that I know of that I have. Of course the trips up to Canada that I've made in the past and also where I lived which was up near the border helped. Now you'd think that Hargreaves could have made the trek up to Canada since he lives in Seattle and not cast any doubts at all!

Right,

as for Dragonflight, I think that "First Canadian Printing, May 1971" is mentioned in all (US) printings. I personally have 3 different copies of that Dragonflight (remember the cover differences?), a 3rd, 5th and an 8th and they all say that. This was one of the reasons we thought Canadian printings didn't exist, because the message is the same, the books are printed in the US (teh US printing goes up) and the Canadian message is a mere extra for a printing that probably never really existed.
Does anybody have a copy of this paperback with NO mention of US printing?

But for the Nebula Award stories... yes! Both my copies are first Pocket Books editions (first paperback ed. / February 1970) and both clearly state: "Printed in the U.S.A." where in the picture you posted it says "Printed in Canada". So that is definitely a Canadian edition/printing.

As is Crystal Singer. My copy has the same cover but a different ISBN: 0-345-32786-1. Both are Del Rey/Ballantine paperbacks (publisher #345) but obviously different editions

Can't say anything about the Dio book as I don't have that particular copy. The Futura/Orbit copy I do have is a 1981 second printing and printed in "Great Britain".

Thanks Becky, always nice to discover these things. It's almost as good ad rewarding as a book hunt Erm... did you unpack your books for us?

Nope, I had these put aside to actually sell. Later on that is, once I'm settled. I just hadn't gotten to packing those yet.

Hmmm, sounds interesting, this search for Canadian editions. Being a proud Canadian myself, I'll have do some detective work on my Pern books and in the local bookstores! Maybe I'll discover some more evidence for you Hans.

Hans,
I managed to find 5 copies of Anne paperbacks that specifically say "Printed in Canada", three were Pern books - the other two were Pegasus in Flight and The Survivors (Dino planet II). The Pern books were Dragonsdawn, Chroniclesof Pern, and Dragonflight. Now, I haven't checked mt entire collection (some is still in boxes at my parents' home), but I will do so as I can. I'll also scan the books later tonight and post the pics here for you all to see.

Okay, I finally got the images scanned. Sorry for the delay. All three of my children and my hubby have been sick.

Here's Dragonflight...

Dragonsdawn...

Chronicles of Pern...

As you can see Hans, they are the Del Rey books. I haven't come across any Corgi Canadian books. Aren't they just in the UK?

Thanks Sarah!

Well, the Corgis have also been available in Australia and New Zealand, so I thought they might have been published in Canada, too.

Incidentally, I found some other "Printed in Canada" Pern books among my collection that is still stored at my parents' home. They were all Del Rey books - "Nerilka's Story", "Dragonquest", and "The White Dragon".

That would give the impression that all Del Rey paperback editions exist in both USA and Canada printings, doesn't it?

It probably made better sense to have the Canadian copies done by Del Rey since they wouldn't have to be shipped overseas from the UK. And evidently Del Rey has a publishing house in Canada, with the 'printed in Canada' they put in the books. Otherwise they'd just sell the US editions, don't you think? This is all a bit much this early in the morning for my poor old brain.

Are we confusing ourselves here between "Printed in Canada" & "Published in Canada"?

Many British Editions are printed in Hong Kong or China. That does not make them Chinese editions.

With dollar differentials between Us & Canada, I can understand Del Rey PRINTING stuff in Canada. Their parent company, Random House, have plant and offices there. (And the whole shebang comes under Bertelsmann AG anyway.)

But so far I haven't seen any photographic evidence of Canadian Editions.

No, we are not confusing ourselves, and we are talking about Canadian printings, not special editions although they are that provided they also have a different ISBN.
