I know we've discussed this before I didn't turn up the topic in a quick search...
The 1970 Corgi paperback edition of Dragonflight doesn't identify the cover artist anywhere on the book, nor is the info found in bibliographic sources like Hargreaves. When the subject came up before, I remembered the original artwork for the cover being listed for sale once on eBay (and it remained unsold, as the asking price was around $1500!), and I was sure the auction must have given the artist's name but I didn't seem to have saved the information anywhere... Well, I found it! His name is Gianetto Coppola! Here's what the cover looks like As a side note, here's the text from the auction: This is the original cover artwork for the ANNE McCAFFREY book DRAGONFLIGHT. It is for the CORGI SCIENCE-FICTION 1970 paperback. The artwork is painted on a 14.75 X 19.5" sheet of high quality illustration paper which is attached to a 15.75 X 21.5" piece of illustration board. The artists name is GIANETTO COPPOLA and the piece is painted in ink & color ink washs with a bit of prismacolor added. CORGI BOOKS is an ENGLISH publisher.

very psychadelic!
Mind you, the hardback cover for DF is a bit odd! Another splodgy dragon- but just in gold this time!

Elucidate. I'm still trying to find the problem people have with page 110. In mine there's no hatching going on at that point at all.

hang on...
rapp and whiting HB 1969 pg 89 Weyr search chapter with heading By the Golden Egg of Faranth... "It was over very soon. The young dragons paired off with boys. Green riders dropped down to carry off the unacceptable. Blue riders settled to the floor with their beasts and led the couples out of the cavern, the young dragons squealing, crooning, flapping wet wings as they staggered off, encouraged by their newly encouraged Weyrmates." Corgi edition reprinted 1981 pg 78 same chapter off course! It was over very soon. The young dragons paired off with boys. Green riders dropped down to carry off the unacceptable. Blue riders settled to the floor with their beasts squealing, crooning, flapping wet wings as they staggered off, encouraged by their newly encouraged Weyrmates."

No my 1970 edition is without the relevant words.
Interestingly, the 1970 version is printed by Hunt Barnard @ Aylesbury; the 1981 version is printed by Cox & Wyman @ Reading. So it wasn't re-typeset. Therefore they must have been working from the same data string, presumably owned and held by Transworld.

![]() I laughed right out loud when I read that one! Somewhere packed away I have a PB of The White Dragon with a paragraph so messed up you have to draw lines to figure it out. Another copy with the same cover has it all straightened out, though. |

Ah yes Sandi, that's the well known true first US paperback edition, which was recalled (after many many were sold) and reissued fixed still marked as the first edition. I did that one as a Collecting Highlight a couple months ago, which has details on sorting out the misplaced block of text.

When I read WD it was my first Anne experience and I loved it so, but boy did that error cause me confusion! I think I re-read that part 10 times to finally sort it out.
It is surprising that they would sell so many and then fix and reissue as a first. Makes for fun collecting tho! ![]()
