Elsewhere, I mention a book I'm starting, about Pern. For that I need the "best" texts.
Which editions do you recommend that I collect? I am thinking particularly of affordbility; remember, I'm on a pension, and most of my money is going on rent, food, and bills. I am, though, looking at a four year period of planning and note-taking, so I have some time to gather the rosebuds whilst I may.

With your "rules" my choice and advice is easy: buy UK corgi paperbacks.
No hardbacks because of price and UK because it generally has the best edited text and often more text! than it's US counterparts.

I manage to pick up UK hardbacks for £1 both on Ebay, and the one my mum found in a charity shop. I suppose that the problem there is postage.

Edi, UK paperbacks, and sometimes hardbacks, are regularly to be found on Australian eBay too.

And the Corgi editions are those sold in Australia too. So new copies are easy to get through bookstores.

I second Hans' recommendation. They'll be the easiest and cheapest for you to find, often contain more text than the US versions -- and paperbacks are the most likely to be owned by other fans thus making it easier to check your references.

I have a problem paying by anything other than cash, Jax. I do get around now and then, with money orders and IMOs, and a relative-by-my-mother's-marriage's credit card, but I prefer cash where possible, and the corgis can be bought that way.
