Zelandeth, as an experienced traveller in vintage cars, I know exactly how you felt during your trip and congratulations on understanding her needs and getting home successfully.

Hans! Vintage classic cars do NOT break down! They "fail to proceed".

Thank you.

One thing I've learned about cars from behind the Iron Curtain (have owned three Ladas and this is the third 80s Skoda I've owned) is that while they may be somewhat broken, they always seem to manage to keep going and get you where you're going. Even when so mortally wounded that it seems like there is no way on earth that they can possibly still be running.

Been out and about briefly today and it appears that the 500 mile trip hasn't had any adverse effect on anything. Though I still haven't managed to figure out which box my timing strobe is hidden in to check the timing. Thought I knew where it was...however was proved wrong...even though I *did* find the torque wrench which had been AWOL since the move until now. Oh...and I still need to clean up the horrible mess in the engine bay that the overflowing coolant left as that's going to drive my sense of OCD mad until it's done.

Oh, I agree Zelandeth, my Lada was like a tank, it never let me down. the only letdown was that it still had inner tubes and I had to change a wheel many a time. The heating was fantastic and with the tool set that came with it you could virtually build your own car and certainly repair one I know for a fact that mine went bach to the USSR (pun intended) after I traded it in and I wouldn't be at all surprised if it was still running!

Mom is simi happy, she finally got some GOOD pain killers. She is still in a LOT of pain. A lot of it is in her back. Dr. is sending her for X rays for her back tomorrow. When she fell on the 4th they did not Xray her back then.

Kibby is still having problems with a foot. It is hurting and swelling. On the side of it there is a lump. It has been bothering her a little since she hurt in at 4H congress in mid June. Since she has started working it has gotten a LOT worse. When she works all she can do when she gets home is sit with her foot up. Nothing's broke, it has been X rayed twice. Her regular Dr. wants her to see foot Dr. She can not get an appt. in Lynchburg until Sept. 25. I am not waiting that long. I am hoping to her in at UVA Friday or next week.

I hope you are able to get an appointment for Kibby really soon. It sounds like something is wrong even if xrays have not currently shown a break.

Best of luck getting your "vintage" car up to the level of running you want it to be, Zelandeth!

Moonlady, getting through lists is a good thing. I make lists all the time. It's a habit I picked up as a kid and has nothing to do with getting older and forgetting. That's my story, anyway!

The small tarsals and metatarsals in feet tend not to displace when fractured, which can make spotting fractures on x-ray rather more of a guess than medical science pretends.

I think if she could stay home with her foot up for about a week it would get better. She is scared if she takes the time off work she will lose her job. We talked to her manger last night, she said Kibby was a good worker and if she has a Dr. note they would work with her. I'm afraid if she does not take care of the problem now there will be permanent damage done. I want it taken care of before she goes back to school next month.

Thing about foot/toe injuries (especially toes) is that for the most part, yu can't put a cast on them. Immobilize, yes. But a cast mostly won't work. So until you have different results from UVA or something, I'd have to say your plan is a good one.

Does Kibby have really good arch supports in her shoes/trainers? It could be an R.S.I. from standing around so much. I know feet are designed to be stood on but .....

Congrats!, Moonlady.

Half of Kibby's problem is that she will not wear tennis shoes anywhere but at work. I think she needs the support of at least a decent tennis shoes.

Kibby should have good shoes at work. I hope the doc sorts out what the problem in her foot is, but it could be as simple as having shoes that don't fit perfectly and standing for 8 hours a day if she's not used to it, on top of the injury she got at the 4H congress.

When I was in college, I worked at a hot dog stand for a few years, and although I wasn't overweight at the time, my feet hurt like hell for the first two months, even in good shoes.

I am a firm believer of changing your shoes during the day if you're standing a lot. And moving a little - even a few steps, just to keep moving.

Seconded...

Take it from someone who used to do 16+ hour chef shifts! make sure you move and stretch regularly. And if you can change shoes occasionally it does help!

Also agree on the shoes. I love my New Balance. When we went to Disney I bought a pair of Propet sneakers and I walked the heck out of those things every day and my feet were never sore or tired. Great walking shoes, extremely lightweight. However, they might not be "stand in one place all day" shoes. Really good shoe inserts (not just Dr Scholl) from a sporting goods or shoe store could perhaps help.

Congratulations, Moonlady! About 15 years ago I did the number of credits for a Child Development Associate. Nothing so demanding as a PhD of course but I still enjoyed it. You do know what they call a PhD - Piled higher and Deeper!

Oh boy! I mentioned to Jeff yesterday that it's been a couple years since we've been to Newport, Rhode Island. He said we should go again. It looks like a nice long weekend is in the works for early September to see more of the mansions, cliff walk (a paved path along the cliff edge) and watch the ships sail by! Fun!

I spotted a van yesterday, beautifully sign written, which claimed "chimney sweeps fitted" (!)

Also received my voting papers for the election of our police and crime commissioner.

I don't think we ought to be voting for somebody who is commissioning crimes.

Very little this last couple of days as it's just been Too Darned Hot.

26C doesn't sound like much to those of you over in the hotter areas of the US and countries with similar climates, but it's plenty when you live in a country where the concept of A/C really hasn't yet been embraced, and our buildings are generally designed to conserve as much heat as possible rather than lose it.

Our own place mercifully actually is reasonably well ventilated. but even so it was 40+ in the one bedroom yesterday before I caved and switched on the portable AC in there!

I certainly appreciate that is very hot. Specially for UK!!!!
In New Zealand our temperatures are down to one figure . But it is the middle of winter so we could do a lot worse. We just have to count our blessings and consider how much worse it could be, don't we?

It's been even hotter here in Finland, 30 C yesterday, and for us -20 C in winter in the daytime is pretty standard, happens almost every year. Our buildings are usually even better insulated than in the UK. I remember feeling the draught there in every house I stayed in, but perhaps the concept of double glazing in every room has finally caught on there too, here triple glazing is standard.

OK ladies and gents, I want to try out this recipe. One of the ingredients it calls for is cool whip, this isn't something readily available in the UK so what do y'all suggest I substitute for it? Can I just whip some cream or is it vastly different?

ETA Do you think this stuff would work?

I would have thought that chocolate flvoured instant whip would go ok; or how about a meringue top?

Originally I don't believe Cool Whip had any milk or cream in it at all. I refuse to use it. The last time I had any it was far too sweet and had an oiliness to it that was not what I wanted in food. I suppose you could try whipping some heavy cream and folding that in. Hang on, I have a no bake PB pie recipe sans Cool Whip:

CRUST-
3 rows of oreo cookies out of the package
1/2 cup melted butter
Grind together and press into a 9" pie pan

FILLING-
Beat 1 1/2 cups heavy cream
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup confectioners sugar

ADD to that-
1 cup peanut butter
1/2 cup heavy cream

Mix all ingedients, pour in pan and freeze until solid

CRUST-
3 rows of oreo cookies out of the package
1/2 cup melted butter
Grind together and press into a 9" pie pan

FILLING-
Beat 1 1/2 cups heavy cream
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup confectioners sugar

ADD to that-
1 cup peanut butter
1/2 cup heavy cream

Mix all ingedients, pour in pan and freeze until solid
Oooh interesting, might have to switch out the Oreo's though, I'm not a fan.

I'm sure lots of other cookies would do as well! I'm going to make it for Mike's birthday this week instead of cake. I'm thinking about melting some chocolate and spreading that on top before freezing.

Sounds delicious. I'd be careful about pouring melted chocolate over whipped cream though, it might melt the cream? Unless it is still workable when it's a bit cooler?

I had wondered about that. Jenn suggested getting a squeeze bottle of chocolate that hardens fairly quickly and is used as a topping on some ice cream sundaes. A trip to the store for ideas tomorrow! If it works out it should be like a giant peanut butter cup. Yummmmmm!
