Sorry your sister is having such a crappy year. It just seems like some years everything is crappy. Hopefully the rest of the year is better for her.

She's pretty bad I think, heartbroken and traumatised. The mare broke her leg running down the field all happy to meet her, and Sarah got to witness it happening, and then spent the next half hour trying to keep her terrified and hurting mare as calm as possible until the vet could get there. He said it was the worst break he's ever seen. And then the whole family + friends had to move her away from the hedge (too close to badgers). It was nightmare fuel, utterly awful, and coming on top of the last year for her. <--details whited out so no-one sees them unless they want to highlight the text. Please don't quote them.

Hehe, on the plus side you only have to do it once!

Think that was the worst part of our last move was having to pack everything up, move it all into storage containers - then a month later having to shove it all back into vans and move it again!

Still haven't unpacked half of my boxes, four months in...

Today I've mostly been picking away at the to do list getting the car ready for the show I'm taking it to on Sunday. Really looking forward to that at the moment even though the weather forecast doesn't look great. I'll be helping the guys at the museum who look after the preserved buses out as well, so should be busy in the morning and afternoon as well getting stuff up, running and into position and tidying up at the end of the day. They're always happy for an extra pair of hands - especially when it's a pair of hands that doesn't mind being asked to position buses for display. ...even if I maybe to take a slightly longer route around the site to where I'm going than is strictly necessary sometimes. Just hoping that the Leyland National doesn't make such a fuss this year as it did last time...

Good luck with the unpacking Kath & Zelandeth.

I went to the beach with friends, their kids & my youngest. We had a good time; however, I burned despite sunscreen so next time the umbrella will be remembered because unlike everyone else my body doesn't tan and sunburns hurt.

Sorry to hear that, Moonlady!

Generally I don't burn, but I do try to make sure to use sunscreen anyway. I'll be packing it on Sunday as that show is the actually the one event I have a history of getting myself burned to a crisp at.

Last year in particular both because the day started pretty dull, and because I was busy most of the day (mostly trying to keep kids out of the bus cabs!) so hadn't noticed it getting warmer, especially as it was pretty breezy. I distinctly remember the moment of "Ooooooh dear..." when I got home and saw myself in a mirror. Especially when I saw the perfect inverse shadow where my sunglasses had been. Had even managed to burn through my T shirt that day.

Not making that mistake again. Or so I say now...we'll see how long that lasts.

Sounds like me, I burn no matter what I do. I NEVER wear swimsuits. If I do I can not wear much of anything else for the next week. Shorts and tees. For some reason my legs do not burn or tan.

Today I mostly had to reacquaint myself with the art of setting up an ignition system with contact breaker points!

...It's been a few years, and I'd forgotten how fiddly and picky they could be. Eventually got things sorted out though. Methinks an electronic ignition conversion may be on the cards in the future in the interests of reliability (and usually an improvement in economy and emissions due to a better spark).

In New Zealand we have to be particularly careful about sunburn. I do hope you girls get advice on the strength of the cream you use, and buy the one that offers the best protection? And wear a hat?? Sun burn is not nice and terribly aging darling!!!!

Yesterday night I went hiking with the Sierra club. I enjoyed it greatly and look forward to the next hike.

Moonlady, I met my husband 36 years ago on a hike with the Appalachian Mountain Club.

All of us use a lot of sunscreen. When I was a kid no one seemed to have made the connection so all of us with red hair/fair skin burned to a crisp occasionally. My husband has to wear a hat, the top of his head is bald! I wear a hat to keep the sun out of my eyes.

The air is pretty clear up here in Scotland as well, so you do need to be careful. One of the worst burns I ever got was in the middle of winter on a day when the temperature never made it anywhere near the positive side of freezing. Was sunny though, but you didn't feel it. Not until you got in the shower anyway!

Today I mostly...tinkered with the car (cue collective gasp of surprise from the audience).

Firstly I noticed that one of the radiator hoses looked a bit damp. When I poked it, this fell off.

Hmm... *Scratches head* Last time I checked, it was generally excepted that the hose clips were supposed to hold the hose in place...not the hoses hold the clips in place. Cue a quick rummage around for a replacement (couldn't find one), ending in me scavenging one from my poor neglected Peugeot 306. Have left the hose it came off sitting on the driver's seat so I won't forget and try to start it with no water in!

Ended up wearing half the Skoda's coolant when I pulled that hose off courtesy of a poorly timed gust of wind. It's about ten years since I last tried to drown myself in coolant, and it still tastes just as revolting as I remember.

Figured that while I had the system drained anyway that I would also replace the last two inch stub that was left of the famous green fabric braided hose (it's widely reputed to decompose on the slightest contact with oxygen, and is generally the bane of old Skoda owners). Took about twice as long as expected as it really didn't want to come off, but was sorted without any real incident. Once that was done, refilled and bled the system and let it burble away to itself for an hour just to make sure there were no leaks or air locks or anything.

While it was doing that, I took the opportunity to give all the interior plastics a wipe down and to sort out some of the untidy spaghetti behind the radio. It had been trailing on the floor and occasionally trying to form an unhealthy connection with the clutch pedal ever since I got the car.

That was the result of ten minutes of standing on my head and a couple of cable ties. Much better.

Would all have been much more pleasant mind you if it hadn't been pouring with rain the whole time!

My husband was so glad our "new" house has a 3 car garage. He has shelving all across the back, space under the shelves to store everyone's winter/summer tires. The center "bay" is perfect for changing tires and various other repairs. We didn't have a garage the first 30 years of our marriage.

Well once I get this thing to the other end of the country, it will be living in a garage thankfully!

...Because let's face it, a 27 year old car that was designed behind the Iron Curtain does not equal a low maintenance runabout!

Plus it means I can throw a dehumidifier in there to keep the rust at bay, which is the real draw to be honest.

We have a really good mechanic who is willing to take payments. Which as much work as the van has needed is a very good thing. Between tires, front end (just about everything replaced) and back breaks we have had close to a thousand dollars in it in the last couple of months.

Our gutters need to be cleaned as well. No one here is in shape to climb ladders except Kibby, who does not like heights or ladders and will NOT do them.

Hubby, Tammy and I all have bad knees. Steps are avoided at all cost, (almost)

How about inventing a gutter-cleaning tool with a long pole (rather like the apple-picking gadgets) but with a blade shaped to fit into the gutter and angled down. Then you could plow out your gutters from ground level.

I bought gutter covers that Jeff installed on the lower ones last year. Getting them on the second floor gutters won't happen unless we hire a professional. This clogged gutter is over the back deck. The Little Giant ladder just reached it fully extended. It wobbled, even with Jeff holding it. Also, I should have worn thicker soled sneakers. I can see why carpenters/roofers wear heavy boots. The main problem was a bend in the gutter that was full and stuck. I was able to take a long narrow wire brush and unclog it. Should have gotten a picture because I hope to never go up there again.

P'ter my husband is way ahead of you. He made himself that exact thing and usually it works very well. In this case for some reason there is a bend in the gutter that creates a lovely spot for debris to collect and the long pole contraption just couldn't handle it.

Shoes on ladders are always a tricky thing, too thin and they aren't comfortable as you are balancing on a small area, too think and you can't feel where your feet are and run the risk of missing a step and falling.

I like ladders, towers, scissor lifts and generally all things 'up'. It's a big part of why I like playing in theatres!

Summer's here with a vengeance. Well, hot for us at any rate (27 C in the shade). Yesterday was worse, though, with a relative humidity of 68 percent...

Simon that tent sounds wonderful. I had never heard of such a thing. You should definitely take that lovely lady you're married to "out" occasionally - assuming you do remember what she looks like?!

After I got down from the ladder and it was put away I said to Jeff we should have gotten a picture of me up there, because I hope to never have to do that again!

Little kids should make noise, maw. We have new neighbors next door with little girls ages 4 and 6. They shriek and howl and yell, especially when playing in their pool. I love hearing it. The other two neighbors have kids that are older and are never outdoors.

We have summer here as well. 68 percent humidity would be dry for us in summer. We regularly have it 80 to 90 percent. You get used to it. My best friend had been living in Colorado for years where it is very dry. She is currently living here taking care of her parents, who are 96 and 100. She hates our weather, even though she grew up here. I have to say, there are days when I love our central air conditioning.

Simon, those tents are usually great things and... very romantic

They are awesome, it's our second time to this same festival. With the act we are seeing I'm not sure it will be especially romantic though. We're aiming to do the romantic but in a resturant before hand!

Yesterday I set out on a road trip of roughly 500 miles, in a 27 year old Skoda with a cylinder head gasket of questionable condition, a cooling system that won't hold pressure properly, a sickly carburettor and a missing sat-nav so was relying on my forgettory for navigation. What could possibly go wrong?

As it turned out, very little! Progress was pretty slow at a few points as I wasn't wanting to use more than 1/2 throttle if I could avoid it due to the aforementioned question mark over the head gasket, but we kept going. Did of course find a few more things along the way to add to my to do list, not least checking the ignition timing in response to the pinking that was apparent on some of the hills. Also *really* need to get a new pressure cap for the coolant expansion bottle so it doesn't insist on barfing half a pint of coolant everywhere if you have to stop without letting it cool down for 10 minutes after driving at speed!

However after roughly 11 hours including a few breaks, the little car got me home and is now safely parked up in its new driveway (will eventually be in the garage once we have the shed put up for the bikes and such).

Today I mostly did very little at all because it was too warm!
