It seemed to take the Humans quite a while to figure out the Hrrubans weren't native to Doona, despite the hints they gave out (binary in the dirt etc). Could they have been a bit more 'on the ball'?

With no outward signs of high technology, it doesn't seem that surprising that they just didn't think of it.

The Hrrubans deliberately fostered the misconception that they were the natives, by not using advanced technology in the presence of the humans. Hrrestan could only give very subtle hints, and Ken Reeve would hardly have expected to see binary symbols in that context. On the other hand, the humans were a little conceited, automatically assuming that any other race they met in space was bound to be less technologically advanced than themselves.
