Is it just me, or does this read as a bit sketchy in places, and as glossing over potentially interesting bits in others? Theat it tells us things, not shows, such as the aftermath of the incident with the escape pod?

It's very good. If you've read any of Elizabeth Moon's sf, they have the same feel - she coauthored Sassinak. This is part of the Planet Pirates series, in which some of the books overlap - this is how I would read them:

It has a different feel to Anne's solo fiction, for sure. There's less emphasis upon th protagonist as the archetypal Anne heroine, ie. she's not concerned about babies and the right man. It's also a lot more emphatic upon the plot, and there's a greater emphasis upon the military (rather than militaristic), given the setting and occupation of the heroine. I like it, at least, and I recommend it.
