I can not seem to post any pictures. Not sure why. And I went to all the trouble to save the pictures and everything.
![]() Anyway. This was a give away. Whelan cover. A small paper back book, featuring "Weyr Search" as a stand alone. |

Is the image saved on a server accessible by the internet? Or is it just on your computer? That may be the problem. You need to find a server where you can store the image. I would love to see a picture of this book! And anymore info you can provide. It sounds wonderful! If you want you can e-mail me a copy of the pic and I can post it for you. mattv2099@gmail.com |

JJ, we don't have attachments turned on here, instead we use the IMG code which requires you to post your image online somewhere else.
So how'd you get this giveaway?

Oh, there's quite a lot of paperbacks with Weyr Search and mouse's could be any of those.
Remember it won a Hugo and that's the reason in turnsup in a number of anthologies, among them several compilations with Hugo Winners, duh ![]() Funny story here: I recently was researching a paperback, edited by Asimov, called the Hugo Winners 1968-1970 and it turned out I alsready had it on my shelves... ![]() ![]()

Ah, I've seen that before, given away by Del Rey at DragonCon. While interesting to a collector (as everything is interesting to a collector!), I don't know that it has much inherent value as a collectible. Becky, what do you think?

Cheryl, I'm honored that you'd ask me if I thought this was valuable!
![]() I'd say that most places wouldn't consider it valuable at all. It's not a first edition or first printing of a story. It's just a reprint of an older story. I'm betting that Del Ray not only gave it away at DragonCon but probably other places where Anne was featured. And if Anne is still doing book signings, they may give them away there too. Having said that, I'll say that a McCaffrey fan would like to have a copy of it in their collection. It's something different to add to the collection. But I'd not pay a huge amount of money to buy it off eBay or some seller. And before anyone asks, yes I do have a copy of this item! It's in with all my other DragonCon goodies! Like the Dragonriders t-shirt that was given away by Atlantis-Alliance (or is that Alliance-Atlantis?), who was doing the tv show. ::sigh:: We came soooooo close on that one! I would have had Anne sign the copy but I knew that she was having trouble with her arm so didn't put her thru signing it. She had signed some neat postcards to do with the show and so I did take one of those tho. ![]()

Those postcards are neat, aren't they?
Becky, not sure how to broach this, but surely not only what is valuable is collectible ![]() My Dragonhold ballpoint pen is probably worth next to nothing (no idea how many Anne had made ![]() ![]() So... hmm, the bottom line is"what's the definition of a collectible? ![]() Is it anything an Anne McCaffrey fan might value? Wants to have? ![]()

Hans, I agree with you 100%!!! An item is collectible if someone wants it, whether they pay for it or not.
Maybe my comment about not paying a whole lot for it is misleading....sorry for that ![]() I have the button you mentioned (hmm, remember sending you a pic of it a while back, did you ever get one, tho I'm guessing you did from your post). And I picked up the Dragonflight at DragonCon as I said. Why? Because it would go into my collection! ![]() As for items being collected with little or no monetary value.....I have saved my SFBC catalogues that came in the mailings with the promos for Anne's books, just in case, ya know. ![]() Some people collect things because they believe the value will go up and they'll make money off of selling it. I'm not sure what I call that, or if there's already a name for it. I collect Anne's books and other items because I love them for the connection to the work she's done. Hmmm, I think we need to come up with another term for people who love what they collect, not just collect for monetary gain later on. Are there different terms already? Oh, I'm jealous of your Dragonhold pen!!!!! If you ever find another one, you know who to contact first, don't you??? ![]()

Ah, I thought so, I knew we would agree on this
![]() Yes, I got the button. I think it was Cheryl who bought one for me at auction. The Dragonhold pen however was a simple gift from Anne, I also have another pen, an empty one which I know Anne used and which I nicked from a Draginhold dustbin ![]() I've got lots of correspondence with Anne (both mail and email) and even two manuscripts, even though they are computer printouts and alas don't look like the manuscripts of yesteryear. Very special to me is also the last Season's Greeting/Christmas card Anne sent out (nowadays she sends money to charity in stead of sending every acquiantance a card). Maybe you have it too? it's veru special and I should scan and post it. An the pictire she once sent all the KT hosts (I think) that also says: "to Hans" and has a little tulip drawing by her (at the time she was planning to visit me and I was to show her round the Dutch tulip fields). And that simple paperback that has Virginia Kidd's name and address sticker in it, which I bought at a Dutch bookmarket! Imagine how it came to be here!? In short, there are many items like that, that hold a special meaning to me, they might be collectible but are not necessarily valuable ![]() ![]()

If it's the one I assume it is, they gave it away at GenCon, too, which didn't have any real focus on Anne--they just were pushing Dragon's Kin at the time along with other books they were releasing. I doubt it will have any long-term value as there were probably thousands printed for various cons, but it's probably worth a few dollars on eBay.
There's nothing wrong with speculating. A *lot* of people in the comics business do it, though it's lead to publishers doing things like multiple covers that drives the value down because the minute you start marketing to speculators, you're making the items less rare and as such less valuable to speculators. I know it may break some people's hearts here, but for some people who deal in books it's a way to make money. Or deal in anything, really--I have a couple Breyer models I didn't really LIKE all that much in aesthetic terms, but they're limited-runs and are already worth five or six times what I paid for them. If I ever need money, I know they'll sell. Or, heck, if I ever get tired of keeping them, I'll make money. I collect what I like. But I'm not oblivious to things having value. Unless I'm REALLY into something, I'm not going to buy an item that isn't likely to appreciate in value unless it's something I plan to just use (cheap paperbacks, which may even end up being given back to the used bookstore for credit.) And of course at a library sale, where things are just marked to sell, I'm going to keep my eye out for books that I have no interest in but which I can turn around and sell. Made a LOT off a mint-condition set of US hardbacks of the Tower and Hive series. I paid about eight dollars for four books and made more than twenty on eBay. *I* wouldn't have paid that much for them, but obviously someone was willing to, so we both benefit. |

Ah, Ghyle, thanks! I knew there was a term!
I've 'speculated' on a few items in my time. There's a series of 3 books by another author that a friend of mine loved to read, tho I never did, but she loved them and when I looked for them on eBay I found that people were paying fairly decent prices for them. I started looking around in all the book stores and, over time, found several sets of the series that I did sell at a profit on eBay. But I bought them specifically for immediate resale because I new there were folks who would buy them. My Anne collection tho, is for me and me only. ![]()

I'm one who finds speculation on books doesn't really help the one person who deserves the money, the author, in the overwhelming number of cases.

Ï moderately "speculate" too in the sense that what I earn by selling I can put into books I want for my collection

Exactly, Hans!!! Well, said! Selling has helped me with my book budget on many occassions!
![]() Gyhle, I've sold my Collector's Guide on eBay in the past and actually saw one up for resale a couple of years ago! I was rather amazed, stunned and, yes, a bit flattered to see one for resale. I can't remember what it sold for tho, but I really didn't care, I'd sold it once already. My only problem is, that the person who originally bought it from me evidently didn't use it the way it should be, since it wasn't marked in any way. That makes me sad. ![]()

Becky, that happened to me too with a book I was editor of and carried out the pre 1811 research (a genealogy of the Van der Steen family), published in 1995.
Originally we sold that for about 60 guilders (was before euro time) and it was sold out and got a second printing, which was sold out by the next year. I saw specialised second hand bookshps asking for more than double the price of the original book, and that was a few years ago already... ![]() ![]()

The game is getting addicted and become a collector, buy from stores and on the internet. Meet other collectors and discover what they have and you don't. Exchange experiences and go hunting again. And did I mention roaming the internet and hunting for hidden treasures? And then some more hunting
![]() Knowing Anne personally helps but isn't enough by far ![]()

Vangie, the best places online to look are eBay and Bookfinder. The pin was a promotional item when The White Dragon was released, and will occassionally pop up on ebay. The pen is trickier to come by, I've never seen it for sale. Other unusual stuff includes a Pern boardgame, a couple of posters, and some scuptured dragons.
Welcome to the board, and the wonderful world of collecting Vangie! ![]()

Of course speculating benefits the author, at least as much as ANY resale does. Not directly, of course, but the only time an author recieves any tangible benefit from the sale of one their books is the first time it's sold new from a retailer. At that point, the sale either goes towards earning out their advance (the more likely scenario as the majority of books never earn out and are remaindered or recalled and destroyed) or gives them a small percentage of sale towards the royalty if the book has earned out. It is also the only time the publisher knows about the sale and as such can tell if there's a market for the book.
Speculating is no more damaging or insulting than any trade in used books. In either case, it can help the author, but only indirectly (ie someone will discover the author through used books and will then go out and buy their books new.) If I find an author I like from used books, and find that they're still actively publishing, I'll try and buy their books new, so that they get the sales numbers for them. |

I appreciate your position, Anareth, and, like you, I like to buy new books where possible, to assist the author.
I feel, though, that speculation is ultimately predicated upon the idea that all things are worth a certain amount of money: if something gets too rare, too, there is the danger of its theft for criminal purposes, for one thing; otherwise it can get locked up and unavailable to the serious scholar or student. What matters for me is an item's worth in terms of culture, nor money. |

Addict or insane its all in the eye of the beholder... just don’t ask my husband....
![]() I have read the Pern series about fifteen or so times. I just started rereading it again. I didn’t get into collecting the books for the sake of collecting until this last year. I use to only buy them for reading purposes until I started looking online and saw what was out there for the collector and poof I was hooked ![]() |

Vangie, yes you need to find and buy the Hargraves, to be able to know what you are looking at when you find something. I have used mine now everytime I go hunting, that and Becky's Guide. Both are invaluable for a collector, as I have recently found out...........Thank you once again Cheryl for mine

Here's another view of the cover:http://perso.wanadoo.fr/meus/covers/images/fyopusa.jpg
This isn't my copy, but it looks just the same as the book is in near mint condition. PM or email me at cheryl@srellim.org and we'll work out the details!
