Default Job interview

I just got an e-mail with an invitation to a job interview!
I had almost forgotten that I applied for this job a bit over a month ago, but it's nice that the apparently didn't forget about me, and actually wants to meet me.
Well, I bet I'm not the only lucky one, and they might actually have invited everybody who applied, but it's still nice to get this interview. It will be my first job interview in Germany, so I have no idea what to expect. Maybe I should read up on the Germans way of handling a job interview. It took me some months to realise that it is standard procedure to include a photo of yourself when applying for a job, so who knows what other weird stuff you have to know to get through a job interview.

It is a bit scary - well, not scary as in scary, but... do I really want this job? I mean.... I was hoping to finish my long distance studies by Autumn and I won't have as much time to study if I get a job. And when will I have time to crochet?

I guess I have to grow up and get some real job working experience, so now is probably better than later.

BTW - the job is technical draughting.

It's basically there to jog the memories of a panel, and help them match their memories of interview performance with the contents of the cv/whatever. Saves on confusion in the long discussion sessions after the interviewees have gone home, and is particularly important if interviews are spread over several days.

I guess Kath is right, but I also found the photo thing weird. In Denmark they are not alowed to ask for your photo (unless the job is a modeling job I guess), so I didn't realise that they expect you to include a photo in your aplication in Germany.

Good luck!

In Finland, people don't usually include photos in job applications, it's certainly not expected. However, for one job I got an interview for, they took a picture at the interview, I assume to remember people better. I did get to the third stage in interviews, but unfortunately not the job...

I'm guessing they have a long period in which they do their interviews. As far as I remember the starting date for the job is 1st of July, so they have loads of time to interview people. But it culd of course also be that they sense what a perfect person I am for the job.

I'm gonna be honest with them at the interview, so if they somehow ask be about if I plan to move, I will have to tell them that chances are that I move out of Germany next Summer. But if they don't ask me, I don't think I will volunteer that information.

If my chances look slim, I could ask them to consider me for a Praktikum.

They certainly would not have asked you for interview unless they thought that you fullfilled the requirements for the job and would be able to do it. Try not to answer questions that they are unlikely to ask (i.e. will you be staying in Germany full time). Just spend your time showing them how suitable you are for the job. The best of good luck.

I've spent yesterday and today prepairing for the interview tomorrow. The interview is at 2:30pm, and I will staying away from all other languages than German until then from now on, so I don't get words from different languages confused in my head.

Thank you all for the good luck wishes.

Smile Re: Job interview

The interview went very well I think. He didn't try to sneak in any personal questions at all, and he was very nice and pleasant to talk with.
He did ask me if I would consider buying a car if I get the job, 'cause they might send you around to work at their customers firms.
I have no working experience in this field, since I started to study egyptology right after I finished my Technical Assistent studies, but it didn't sound like this would be a huge problem. He asked if he could maybe have me come in for a technical test to see how my skills using AutoCAD is, which I of course would love to do (I like showing off when it's something I know I'm good at ), so I think that he likes me, otherwise I don't think he would have bothered to ask. He also said that there was an opertunity that he could maybe offer me som voluntered training on some programs (6 weeks training without pay), which I just see as free education! I did make it clear to him that at this stage it's more important for me to get working experience than to get a lot of money.

He said to call him, if I hadn't heard from them in 3 weeks, so now I just have to wait and hope that they contact me soon.

Big Grin Re: Job interview

Wow! He called me half an hour ago!
That was way faster than expected.

It's not that I have the job yet, but it's an ingeneering firm and I would be working for one of their customers and the customer apparently wants to meet me - on Monday! I will also be taking a supervised test with some CAD program (AutoCAD and maybe something else I guess).

My only problem now is that I have no idea what to wear. I should be wearing something on the relaxed side on conservative, but I wore my only nice looking shirt to the interview yesterday. It's getting really warm outside, but I wouldn't dare showing up in a skirt and bare legs. I should go rummage through my clothes and see what I have, and otherwise see if I can find buy something cheap but nice.

Ooh, isn't it exciting!

You could also treat yourself to something new? The occasion warrants it

If they call that fast, even for "only" the test, it means you are first choice whatever happens
