"How do we stop people using them?" Mirrim asked "If you ban their use, someone with the brains of a glowbasket will reckon that, if they time it back to before you banned them, it'll be all right."

Especially considering F'lar's amongst the ones hooked up on them, thought Lessa grimly. "I don't know. For now, the best thing we can do is somehow get rid of the ones they they already have in the stores. You go do that. I'll keep an eye on Manora."

Manora looked up from her contemplation of the bubbling stew, "Who're you? That purple haze round you really suits you."
Shards! thought Lessa, half the weyr's like this and we've got thread-fall tommorrow.

A terrible stench wafted through the door. Mirrim returned rubbing her hands in satisfaction. "There! Path fried all the ones in the store. Now we need to find out where they're coming from."

Lessa looked towards Ramoth. "Hmmm. Ramoth is looking particularly well, I suspect she's feeling in an 'interesing state of mind' She'll be keen to find Mnemneth. (And," she thought to herself, "that would account for F'lar's feeling particularly randy the last 24 hours) C'mon, Mirren" she said aloud, "Let's go a-huntin'"

A quarter of a glass later they were en route between for the forests of Southern Boll when Lessa felt a sudden surge of acceleration. "What the?"

I couldn't help it: I just got rid of the rest of the curry. I feel much lighter.

They landed near water, and Ramoth peered at the odd puffballs all around. Ruth is bringing Sharra. I need to wash my rear.

Lessa quickly landed and immediately started to sneeze.

Ramoth waddled into the water and immediately, a flock of wild fire lizards surrounded her. But for some reason they did not stay. A dolphin approached squeeing joyfully. In spite of Ramoth flapping her wings and bugling joyfully, the dolphin did not stay either.

"There's something very wrong with Ramoth," Lessa thought very quietly in the back of her mind. Then she panicked. Ruth! she 'called' very loud. Bring Sharra: quick!

"Here I am" said Sharra from behind Lessa. "Whew! What's that smell? " She sneezed. "And why are we sneezing?"

Sharra noticed the white puffballs underfoot, from which a white cloud issued as they moved among them. She immediately pulled a cloth from her medical bag and tied it around her nose and mouth

But by now Ramoth was swimming around sadly friendless and Lessa, hiccupping, giggling, snivelling and sneezing in a most undignified way was lying on the sand trying to build a sand mushroom

"You know this stuff?" asked Lessa, trying to pull herself together.

"Yes; it's about the only inedible fungus on the planet. It makes us hallucinate, and totally wrecks dragon guts for days."

"Oh Shit!" observed Lessa with uncommon accuracy, "and we've got fall tomorrow."

Sharra coughed discretely. "Um. I suspect the reason is not so much what Ramoth may have eaten as the results of it at the other end. Suggest to her that if she digs herself into the sand under water and cleans herself rather than waiting for friends to do it for her she might be more approachable"

Having instructed Ramoth how to proceed, Lessa turned her attention to Ruth who had chewed down a gullet of firestone and was about to flame the funghi. Sharra grabbed her arm. "We need to retire about ten dragon lengths that way."

Lessa tried to do so gently, for Ramoth had a nasty temper, even with her, but it did not sit well with the golden queen, as Lessa knew it would. But, Ramoth still did as suggested. Lessa had to turn her head around and block her mind from the dragon so she would not sense her smiling and laughing to herself.

"We need to be upwind of this," said Sharra, pulling Mirrim and Lessa through the trees.

Ruth took off, hovered and let fly.

There was a brilliant green light silhouetting the trees and an horrendous stench.

"Is it meant to do that?" Asked Mirrim.

"Yes," said Sharra, "only the fresh ones make that flash. The database at landing says something about volatile enzymes. Who picked them?"

"F'nor."

"Well, I hope he's suffering too. If you've got Fall tomorrow we'd better call in other weyrs to help out. The Old-timers tried to cope on their own and lost a number of dragons. Mind you the sufferers' hallucinations can be very amusing when there's no emergency."

Lessa, who was more relaxed now that she knew something could be done to fix this, allowed herself a chukle, remembering that morning. "Oh, I know", and just smiled misteriously at the women's puzzled glances.

They arrived back at Benden in time to see F'nor throw himself off his weyr ledge.
Canth disappeared, reappeared flying inverted below F'nor, disappeared again and finally reappeared dropping lightly to the ledge.

F'nor danced up to Brekke, "That was fun Mummy, can I do it again? Please?"

Lessa tried saying to herself that it's the mushrooms talking, but she still felt her face go red. Thank Faranth, Brekke quickly took F'nor by the hand and dragged him away, not looking Lessa in the eye. A good think too, for Lessa's palm was seriously twiching, and she though she wouldn't be able to supress herself had Brekke tried to defend her mate.

Now we have to see what we can do about F'lar, she thought. And by Faranth's First egg, if he says something like F'nor, this morning's kiss and sex was the last one he'll ever have!

And with a very heavy headache and what seemed to be a short term memory loss. Blinking in the dim-lit cavern, he came to realise that he was in his Weyr, though he couldn't, for the life of him, remember which day it was, or what he was doing the day before. The only thing he could remember was F'nor and the other riders talking about some great find down from the South, and urging him to eat it. After that - nothing.
And now he was lying on his bed, alone, and without a cover. Pushing himself up in the bed, he saw Lessa standing in the passegway to the dragon's den. The first thought that crossed his mind was, that if looks could kill, he would be a pile od ash on the floor. And the second one was that he wished he could remember what the hell was it that he did. That way he could at least try and wiggle himself out of this mess.

"Complaint?" asked F'lar, as if dumbstroked, and then shook his head."Lessa... what happened?"

"Oh, there's time for that. Food and bath first. Then I'll tell you everything." There's was some evil grin on her face.

A half-glass later F'lar looked at the bowl of porridge: it seemed to look right back at him. "Go on: eat me. If you dare!"

He pushed it away, shuddered, and buried his nose in a mug of klah.

"And how are we feeling, darling?" asked Lessa, walking into the room, with a wicked grin on her face. F'lar groaned."We are feeling like something that went through a dragon's stomach and came back the wrong way."

"Well that's about correct. Blame yourself and your brother: you two picked the wrong sharding fungi." F'lar winced. "About half the Weyr are out of action for today's fall, including Ramoth, although I'm alright. As soon as you are all fit enough, you and the other sufferers are going to load up with firestone and go and destroy as much of the offending stuff as you can find."

"Oh, believe me, if I could, I would jump on Mnementh and do it right away! I've never felt like this in my life, and believe me, I've had my share of parties in the Weyr. You're not affected?"

"No, I didn't eat the 'curried avian'. Ramoth did however, which is why I too am grounded. I'm not risking her sore rear end in a fall. She'd probably fart at the wrong moment and accelerate right into a clump of thread!"

F'lar almost chocked on his klah and had to cough it out.
"Ramoth says she would never, and that she's more then ready to fly!" said Mnementh in his mind.
"Seems Ramoth doesn't share your oppinion, love." said F'lar to Lessa.

"Yes," replied Lessa with a scowl, "but not that type of flying."

"Oh ... ?"

"And, I'm not risking our relationship with a mating flight when she's not fit. At present some randy blue would probably catch her. I do not want to see any change in Weyr leadership, let alone that."

F'lar had to smile."I'm glad to hear that, love."

"Oh, don't get your hopes too up, Weyrleader. I'm still mad. You of all people should've known better."
