Default An Ineloquent Goodbye.

(All disclaimers apply.)

It was quiet as ever. An endless span of gray, bordered on one side by oblivion, and on the other by a faint gold-white expanse. They flew in the middle of it, without haste, or need for impatience or worry. Wherever they were, there they were, after all, and they were together. That was all they needed.

Ah, Duluth said, turning his head. Another one. Let's land for a moment.

They did, though how they could without a proper ground, neither knew. But neither questioned it, either. It worked, somehow, so why fret the details?

They faced the oblivion, waiting. In a moment, they could see a gleaming sun-gold form -a dragon, of course-, small in the distance, and slowly coming closer with great sweeps of her wings. As she came closer, Marco could make out a woman on her back; a green-eyed, freckled woman who sat tall and proud.

The pair landed grandly and lithely, and the woman nodded to them. "Hello, you two."

"Well now," Marco said with a laugh. "Of all the people I thought I'd meet."

She smiled. "It's good to see you."

He saluted, and Duluth inclined his head. "Who's your friend?"

The gold arched her neck proudly as her rider patted it. "This is Asmoth. She asked if I would do her the honor of being my rider."

I waited long enough to find her, so she had to say yes, Asmoth explained, seeming to smile.*

"You suit each other," Marco said simply. "I take it you two are ready to go on?"

"Yes," the woman answered. "I believe we are."

"No regrets?"

"No. It took some time, but I was able to say goodbye."

"Then there's no need to wait." Marco turned and gestured to the white-gold glow. "There's your destination. From what I hear, it's everything you thought it would be, and more. Everyone you loved and lost, from person to pet, is going to be there, like a giant family reunion. Best of all, it's closer than you think."

She smiled again. "Thank you."

Will you do us the honor of flying with us? Asmoth inquired.

The honor is ours, Duluth replied.

Together, the dragons leaped and soared, capering through the soft grayness, and indeed, it did not take long to reach the edge of the warmth offered by the shining border. Marco saluted again, and Duluth roared as he veered away; Asmoth called out, and the woman waved as they vanished into Paradise. A great cry of joy seemed to rise when they did, echoed by a wave of sadness beyond the oblivion.

"That was something else," Marco said after a silent, contemplative time.

What sort of stories do you think she'll find over there? Duluth questioned.

"Well, I don't know. The best, I guess."

She deserves the best.

"I'd say so too."

(sniffle) Thank you, all. You didn't have to say anything, and I'm touched you did.

AnnMarie, I figured naming Asmoth after the angel of April would be fitting. Glad to see it was.
