(Stop laughing, Canadians, we're used to howling gusty gales, but not "feels like 2 degrees" on our weather forecast.)

I retrieved my umbrella from the Railway Station Metro supermaket today. It's back to normal winter Wellington weather except for people who still have power cuts, washed-out access, or need to drive to Auckland.
Par for the course here in early spring. Spring for us starts as soon as the average temperature per day stays above 0 C.

We're supposedly "marine temperate" here - latitude is 41.28 South. I moved here from Tauranga, north-facing, sea level and with a "Mediterranean" climate at 37.68 South. Both are supposedly American plant hardiness zone 10. There the similarity ends. At this time of the year you'd expect Tauranga's temperatures to range from -3c to anything up to +17c - with the occasional polar blast reaching that far via the mountains of the North Island's central plateau. I have seen it snow in Tauranga - by the time I realised those white floaty dots were not a hallucination it had stopped.

Here in Wellington Central there is often no discernable diurnal range. According to my computer it's 11c - 52F at 12.47AM, and the expected high for today is only 13c - 55F. (I just discovered that my weather forecast app switches from one to the other.) BUT - Wellington is in a place where the entire roaring 40s are trying to get through Cook Strait. That can switch to a southerly any time of the day and the temperature will plummet within seconds. Many older New Zealand homes are not weathertight, insulated or properly heated, meaning that inside temperature is the same as whatever is outside.

Meanwhile the people who run our ski fields are all jumping around with glee at getting such a substantial dump of snow. Now all we need is some fine weather to enjoy it!

Temperatures are very variable here too, last year for example, the maximum temperature on Midsummer's Eve was only a couple of degrees C above that on the previous Christmas Eve (11 C and 9 C respectively). The main difference was the amount of daylight, at 60 N there's 19 hours of daylight at midsummer and, conversely, about the same amount of darkness at Christmas. No snow in December, combined with a low cloud cover, looks at midday a lot like Mordor in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings movies.

I think this thread might actually qualify as the "World's Longest Thread" now. I know on the Kitchen Tables, both Old and New, they had to set a limit to the number of pages because the original WLT sort of "collapsed under its own weight" more than once. So a page limit was established and the WLT continued in spirit if not actual number of uninterrupted pages, as this thread has done.

Like I said, I don't know for sure what the longest uninterrupted thread was 'way back when, but the modern incarnations were limited.

Does anybody know?

I don't Allen. I do seem to remember threads longer than 108 pages on old KT though but I can be mistaken. Remember we changed software once on the Old KT. I do have the old archives but can't resurrecte the forum, only look at it as seperate html pages.

Kugai, we're going to have to watch that one directly, it's coming up as having been removed by the BBC.

I can't see what the fuss is about myself. Dr Who is by definition not human, so why can't he do that if she wants to?

What's odder is that I couldn't get it from either of your posts here or on NKT last night - it was just coming up as having been removed by the BBC for copyright reasons - but it's working just fine now.

Kugai, I only have most of the real Old KT archived, the BB board (started 17 years ago by Alec Johnson, Anne's son, after the movie company Alliance Atlantis, who had the movie rights at the time, started the very first forum). With that we also had a chatroom, remember? Those were the good times, when Anne herself came into chat and we had character polls which Alec started but I took over and designed the graphics for.

Later we changed to VBB (like this board). There weren't many new issues and questions in this period and that was the reason I archived all the old stuff. Not sure if I archived that, I was Anne's webmaster by that time and working together with Alec. I was only involved with designing and setting up Anne McCaffrey Fans Forum for a few weeks.

I was just asking 'cause of something we discovered over on QC Forums

If a particular Thread there gets over 100 Pages, certain issues start to crop up so I'm wondering if what we do over there should apply here. There, if a popular Thread gets tg 100 Pages or more,it gets closed and a New 'Part Two' Thread can be started to continue the discussion/Game/Whatever if the subject is still popular with the members. That tends to end the issue as the older Thread drops off to the bottom of the pile.

Just wondering if we shouldn't do that here and see if that helps.

Well, Peter already pointed out that one of the game threads is at 351 pages and we are experiencing no thread problems. Link problems are usually not thread (length) related.

So... if it's not broken, don't fix it

Very close to the first rule of mechanics, Hans: "If it works, don't fix it."

The length of the games threads is possibly due to the fact that most of the replies are only a few characters long. The longer the posts; the shorter the thread?

By the way I'm going to be away for a week, and don't know if I'll be able to post.

Our computers are now capable of loading much more too - so the length of the thread is not the issue that it once was.
