Wow: two limericks!!!

I had a wonderful time (slightly extended).

On Wednesday I was up early to travel by coach to my brother's new house in Suffolk (departure time 06.18) and got there 15.35. Coach is cheap but slow, partly because although it is around 170 miles by the direct route, the coaches go via London making it 280 miles (and there was a 2 hour wait for the second coach). Had dinner and then went out for a film show, not in a cinema but in a converted barn (Wingfield Arts Centre).
The audience numbered 4! The films were all old newsreel footage and documentaries about Suffolk/Norfolk and included the funeral of the victims of the R101 airship diaster, a compilation of wartime footage about airfields in east anglia, and a film somebody just happened to shoot live of the wreck of a wherry. Sounds a gruesome collection but it IS nearly Halloween.

The guy showing the films was at college with my brother, my s-i-l and me (we'd all sung G & S)

On my birthday itself, we started by visiting my father's grave and then went for a long walk around the marshes and commons at Southwold where I spend most of my school holidays (not just summer ones). We had lunch at a good restaurant on the new pier (see WitW #268).

We then went for tea at Stuart's (the old college friend). He inhabits yet another barn, a 3-bay one, with a cartlodge attached to one end and a cow byre attached to the other. His living room, kitchen and bathroom are in the ex-cow byre. His workshop is in the ex-cartlodge (now enclosed). He has a gallery bedroom in one end of the barn, and the rest is a massive collection of old radios (military and civilian), telelvisions, gramaphones, wire and tape recorders.

Friday I set out to come home. My coach was due to leave from Diss at 07.30 (reveille: 06.30) but, thanks to a tractor, we missed it. So, we returned to bro's for a second breakfast, and a couple of hours gardening. S-i-l who was going into Ipswich for lunch with her daughter gave me a lift that far and I eventually climbed onto a coach at 14.45 and arrived home at 23.55.

After 5 hours in bed I then got up to go and teach swimming!

Quite the adventurous birthday, P'ter I didn't know you hail from Suffolk. It's where I visited just before we left for the United States because my son has been working there (Thornham Magna, near Eye and Stowmarket) for a few months. He's returning home Wednesday!

Didn't he do some work experience in Suffolk a couple of summers ago?

I know Thornham Parva better than I know T Magna. The family holiday'd in Southwold from 1950 0nwards and I was living and working in Suffolk from 1983 to 1996.

Sounds a great is somewhat exhausting w/e P'ter.

We have private cinemas that will show old films chosen for a special purpose. I love them. Was the audience of four at your show just for you and your family?

I watched a TV show last week about the conversion of an old barn. What a humungeous job!!!!! Thought it would be cheaper and less stress to start again and build to the same specifications as the original one!

The film show was one of a monthly series with a normal audience of some fifteen. I can only presume that they heard I was coming!

Barns are fun. I've done about twelve schemes for them. Not all as conversions to domestic use. One was to be a school for flower arranging, and one was to be a vehicle workshop for five farms run as a group, and had to include owl nesting boxes in its roof. Most have been timber framed, and the rest were brick or stone.

The best one had been used as a granary and, when I went to survey it, was filled with large metal grain bins. These allowed me to get right up to measure the roof timbers. When up there I realised that I could see old timber mullioned windows. Further search revealed domestic sized doors at ground level. I researched it through the libraries and it transpired that it had originated as a 12th century Shire Reeves Courthouse.

He did that this year, P'ter, and worked there for over three months. He has a friend though, who lives in Cotton, whom he has visited several times and that's how he got to know the region.
Our visit to him at the end of last August was our first acquaintance with Suffolk.
