Default Decorations at the new Royal Palace, Stirling Castle

Lanen and I have just spent an enjoyable day at the opening of the new Royal Palace at Stirling Castle (see "A Palace vit for a Queen"). The interior of the palace has been restored to how it would have looked at the time of Mary Queen of Scots. For the past several years, craftsmen have been recreating the Stirling Heads and the fine tapestries that would have adorned the walls. We watched a team of women painstakingly creating these tapestries thread by thread a couple of years ago when we last visited the castle. Now we finally got to see them in their full glory.

During the visit I took these pictures of two of the tapestries:

These are based on the Unicorn Tapestries at the Metropolitain Museum of Art in New York, except these new reproductions are in their glorious unfaded colours and don't need to be viewed under subdued light. They give you an impression of what the palace was like when lived in.

(I hope these images aren't too large for you - I've posted a larger than usual size because they contain lots of little details. Spot the goldfinch...)

I also photographed some of the Sterling Heads, such as these:

Unlike the faded originals carefully preserved on display, these brightly coloured carvings on the ceiling jump out at you as soon as you enter the room.

Yes, we did have a great visit. These pictures are just a small sample of what was on display too. I'm looking forward to the next revision of the Stirling Castle guide book. It will be good to find out who the Stirling Heads represent (although I've heard the identity of some of them is a mystery).

Steven...fantastic tapestry...beautiful colors. I would be a real treat to see it the way it was when Mary QUeen of Scots was in residence. Glad you had a lovely day there.

OOoooohhh, I'm not much of a tapestry person but I reckon those first ones could probably be found in any of the Pernese Holds depicting something that happened in the area.

They are great guides, Kat. Marjon and I experienced that when we visited Sterling Castle with them.
I also remember the (redone/restaurated) tapestries very well and fondly. They are stunning and the detail is mindblowing. Of course I photographed them and I'll add one to Steven's fantastic pics showing the detail of one of them:
