Info: New features from forum upgrade to 3.8 - A Meeting of Minds

As part of moving the forum to a new server, we finally updated the forum software to the most current release (from 3.7 to 3.8.4). As part of that there are a number of new features -- all little things but still several of interest to our members.

Social Group Discussions -- now threaded like the main board
Within social groups there used to just be a message wall which displayed all posts in order. Now you can create discussion topics and reply to a specific message instead, which is handy! In many other ways the discussions will act like the main forum: posts will be marked as read/unread and can be subscribed to.

The owner/creator of a social group now has moderator abilities over posts to the group (to edit and delete posts).

Social groups can also now be put into categories. On a larger board with many many social groups, this would be very useful, but given how few groups we have, we might not make use of this feature.

Private Messaging
There is now a Quick Reply option for private messages. Messages can now be sorted by date, sender, and title. You can also now Report a private message, should you receive something inappropriate via PM.

Profile Privacy
You can now control what parts of your profile can be viewed by others, by the following categories: everyone, registered members, contacts, and friends. FYI on our forum, profiles are already kept private from anyone not logged in to the forum.

I'm not sure I like one of the 'features'. In user CP most of it looks fine but I get just one line in foreign: 'Messaggi ricevuti'. I can guess what it means; but why does it do it?

I noticed that too somewhere Peter. Seems someone somewhere goofed! I'll check and see if anyone has reported it to Jelsoft in the next few days. I'd imagine they'll get it fixed in the next big release -- right now they're on alpha testing for 4.0 which will have lots of new features.

Another feature: I've had a number of posts this evening double post themselves, sending me messages about fifteen seconds between posts.

Also: the word 'Cafe' in the mast headings etc., is finishing with a question mark in a black diamond instead of an 'e'.

That last will be because there's something wrong with the letter set and the character with an accent is nog recognised.

Well, it works correct for me.

Hmm, the interpretation error might be in your own browser, P'ter. Try setting it to another set (look under view > code)

Since so far you seem to be the only one having double-posting issues P'ter, it probably is a local problem and not caused by the update.

It may well be local, but accents work ok in the posts, etc. It is just in the Library Cafe banner

I've checked my code setting: it's "Western ISO-8859-1" as it's always been.

Another glitch in this version of V-bulletin appears to be in the vertical double arrows, in the top right hand corner of the reply AND quick reply boxes, which label themselves as "Tekverlak Verkleinen" & "Tekverlak Vergroten"

Must be some other glitch at your side then because I have none of the things you mentioned on either Windows or Apple computers, usign browsers IE, Firefox, Opera, Safari and Flock

Hmm... I see them too with Firefox.
I'm back in Delft tomorrow. I'll take a look then (I doubt it'll make much difference but...) or with my uni desktop on Monday.

I suspect the odd language bits are because I haven't updated the templates that were modified by the newest version yet, and there's a conflict with the older templates that I had customized.

Some day soon, hopefully, I will have the time and brainpower to get those updated finally. It won't be this weekend as I have neither time nor brainpower at the moment.

well the black diamonds with query marks in them have disappeared to be replaced by the correct letters. So thank you to whoever did that.
