Default Hildebrandt Signature Anyone?

I was wondering if any of you guys had something signed by Hildebrandt?

I am curious because I just purchased the Pern calander that claims to be signed by him. Ok, not exactly signed, its inscribed... to someone called John. I dont mind the inscription (of course I would prefer the signature alone if its not inscribed to me..). I'm just happy to have the calander intact and in good condition.

I would like to verify if the signature is genuine, but I have never seen one, so not sure what it looks like... I don't have it yet, but will post pics when I get....

Thanks...

That site seems to just have a single sample of Greg Hildebrandt's signature, none of the other brother: http://www.tomfolio.com/autographimg...=723&ret=AGIni

Aha, thanks guys! I will compare the siggies when I get the calendar in a few days. Thanks for posting the link Cheryl!

Question: Which of the brothers did the art for the calendars? Or was it both of them?

Staff: perhaps this needs a searate thread?

I've just found out that if a Paypal paid item is 'Significantly Not As Described' (their phrase) then they will refund the payment and original postage (ie: posted TO you, not the return postage).

So; if you are sold an item 'signed by the author/illustator' and the signature is a forgery, or if it's descibed as 'new' whan it should be 'nearly new', your money is not necessarily lost.

(Apparently this doesn't necessarily apply in Germany, India and China!)

Yes Samsara...it is one my most cherrished AMC treasures...the other is a very old and beat up original U.S. hard cover copy of *The Ship WHo Sang*, that Anne kindly signed for me in person, laughingly commenting to me, that she couldn't remember having ever signed a more*USED* copy of one of her books.

Ok, here it is:

I'm almost positive it's genuine, but there are 2 slight differences between this & the one Lady M has. Namely the way the "T" is crossed, and the end of the sig curves left & over the top to the right. I dont think Lady M's is curved like that. The handwriting does look the same.

I did just realise though, that the sellers name is Johnny, and it is inscribed to John.

So what do you guys think? Is it real?

Oh dear, this is a tough one. There are objects for sale with sigs that look a it like the one you have but also with a much more abstract, unreadable one.

Sam, do an eBay search for "Hildebrandt signed" and look closely at the sigs.

If it isn't genuine, it's depending on the price whether you are conned or not. I'd guess that, if the price was less than c. 35-40 US$ I wouldn't be bothered whether the sig was genuine or not.

Sorry, can't be more helpful as I have no comparison material in my collection.

Hans, I paid a whopping USD $4.99 for the calender, so I'm not worried about the price.

I'll do an ebay search as you suggested. Thanks.

Mmmm.. I see what you mean Hans. It's a toughie....

I did find another sig that curves around & over. It's pretty much identical to the one I have. I also found a couple that look more like Lady M's.

What to do, what to do.... I think for now I will choose to believe it's genuine. The handwriting does look the same.

Anyone else have an opinion? Lady Maelin, what are your thoughts?

*falls off chair*

For THAT price I couldn't care less if the sig was genuine. And I now believe it is 'cause nobody would con someone with a fake sig and then sell the thing at that price! No way

Congratulations, Sam! That is a super find!

The slant to the sig COULD be because he was at an awkward angle to the book when signing.

Samsara...I would say that for the price you paid, you got a steel...as a while back ONE page of the calendar drawings sold for $5.00...and you got the whole thing. I could be so thrilled for that that I really wouldn't worry about if it's real or not.
I do have a feeling that it is real though [Lord... I never sign my name the exact same way every time...do you]...and that the seller just didn't want to keep it any longer...more the shame for him and your lucky day. ENJOY IT Girl !!!!!

Great find even if it may be a suspect siggy or the real deal. Occasionally one will have a bad day signing stuff so some minor differences will occur, usually the person's pressure on the pen and writing will pretty much stay the same even with some variation

First......Congrats on a FABULOUS purchase, Samsara!!! I can't believe the price you paid for this and signed to boot! Awesome find! I'm so very happy for you!

Second....signatures are rarely totally identical. So a slight variation in the signature is fine. If the majority looks like it flows well (without any stopping points were someone might have picked up a pen and then set it down again to start writing), and it's slanted the proper way and the loops similar I'd say you've a genuine signature.

Third....I would almost bet that John and Johnny are the same person and as Hans said, if the seller was trying to pull something he certainly wouldn't have sold it for $4.99!

Sit back, relax and enjoy this wonderful item!

I've have those, too. I made a deal with the seller if I bought them all at the same time. The original price was indeed $4,95 a piece I think.

I haven't been able to find a calendar and when I did not fro a price I wanted to pay. So eventually I bought the prints. I don't paerticularly need the 'clutter' of the calendar and was after the pretty pictures anyway

Though if I do come across a calendar for $4,99.... *drool - looking green with jealousy*

Samsara...Quite a few people have bought the prints...and for the very same reason Hans did, they also have not been able to find the calendar.
Luckily a few years ago, I also found one of them for sale in a small book shop in the east, from an ad on the internet that I stumbled across...beginers luck.

Congratulation, Samsara, great find.
This may be a stupid question, because some of you may already know the pictures from the calender, but for us 'not - so - lucky' people, will you and when post the pictures? I would very much like to see them!
Again, great find, and for a super price! Wow!

Thanks GT!

Just thought you guys might like to know that I found out fromt the seller how the calendar came to be signed...

It was indeed inscribed to him. He purchased it when it came out in '85 because the brothers were his favourite fantasy artists, and he got it signed at a convention in Oklahoma in 1993. I am fully satisfied that it is a genuine signature, and kind of feel bad for thinking it might not be...
I guess he doesn't like them much anymore. *Shrug* His loss, my gain.

Oh, and I saw the prints you guys mentioned. They're still around on ebay for about 5 bucks each.
