Default A long standing wish come true: Swedish "Drakryttarna" comes home

I have found a book that I have coveted since I saw it the first time in Anne McCaffrey's own attic at Dragonhold: The first translation of Dragonflight in a foreign language, published by Lindqvists in the Swedish capital of Stockholm in Sweden, in hardcover!, in 1970. And it is a first edition because of this translation there is only one version. After publication Anne received a letter from the Swedish ambassador telling her the translation by R.L Larsson and Katrin Bjerrome was atrocious! A nice anecdote but it also took care of the fact this edition was never reprinted (the later paperback edition of 1992 has a new translation, more later).

On this forum I wrote in February 2006 that I had probably found a copy (http://forums.srellim.org/showthread...t=drakryttarna). Well, my contact in Sweden did. But alas, it was a copy without its dstjacket and I absolutely wanted that, too, because everytme I see it, I have to laugh. It is one of my favourite covers and it has been discussed here and on previous boards, especially for its comic value

In my 2006 post I promised that I would write a Collecting Highlight on the three Swedish Pern books as soon as I owned all three... well, I now owe you all at least one, new Collecting Highlight. I am so happy! Thanks to my diligent Swedish contact, who needs to get the honour! Tomas of Antikvariat1 in Stockholm who mailed me a few days ago (after almost three years!!) that he had found me a copy and if I still wanted it? YES YES. YES! I immediately wrote him a mail, the day I returned from vacation, asking him what would be the cost so I could pay him. Up til now no answer, but today I found a package on the kitchen table (appropriately) containing the much coveted book, with a simple bill in the padded envelope for 155 Kroner ($22,75 / 15 euro), that's including shipping.

Blekt Mycket fint skick / Fine condition. Slightly paled cover.

Well done, Tomas. You're a star and a fine, fne bookseller giving low prices and high service! If anybody needs Swedish books, please give him your business at info @ antikvariat1.se (remove the spaces for and aft the @).

This is the prize book in my subcolletion of "Pern books with silly covers with especially naked ladies on them in impossible positions!"

Here is the famous cover. Look at those plastic surgeon's boobs on Lessa, riding completely naked on Ramoth. And I think that same surgeon has been working on the faithful gold dragon, too! The Red Star has become the Pink Star. But oh, how I love this book cover!

This is not a picture of Anne's copy, but one I just took of my very OWN copy

Copyright page and first chapter page with the famous first poem in Swedish:

Lessa vaknade av kylan (Lessa woke cold). Hey, no wonder if she rides dragons (un)dressed like THIS!

Gosh Hans, that subcollection name must take up a lot of space on the database!

What a wonderful item! And it just goes to show that patience can very much be a virtue! ^_^

I'm glad you found a treasure! What an interesting cover! LOL! Why do people think that naked ladies and dragons go together? I bet Anne didn't like this cover either, another cover to rip off! Just joking! You were in Anne's attic? What did it look like?

Great (?) find, Hans!!! The ? is only due to the cover art. It's one of those 'it's so ugly it's cute' things.
Nice book seller too! He needs to be on the lookout for those books and could sell them here! He'd have several buyers, I'd bet! Including me! I don't collect other languages, but that cover..........

Dragonbuddy, yes, I have had that priviledge more than once, going through he book collection for my TUB, the ultimate bibliography.

In the link I gave there's actually a picture of the attic: http://forums.srellim.org/showthread...t=drakryttarna

That picture is from 2002, here's one from 2006:

I got an answer to my thank you mail to Tomas today which I want to share with you! I told him he went beyond the call of duty, is a top bookseller and wold oblige him if he needed any recommendation anywhere. He wrote:

Thanks, my pleasure altogether. It is one of my motivations, with the second hand bookshop, to make people happy (it's not for the money). I thank you sincerely for the offer of a recomendation and for the moment I dont have any forum for it. But I might take you up on it - in another three years perhaps.

On a funny note... I found the book while on holiday in Helsinki, Finland.
So it is a very international book. Published in Sweden, sold to Finland, sold to Sweden and finally sold to the Neatherlands :-)

most sincerely

Tomas Friberg

It's in the earlier post, Anneli: info @ antikvariat1.se (delete the spaces).

Maelin, I (indeed) don't mind the nudity at all. On the contrary. And there's a great number of SF and fantasy cover artists who do nudity in an excellent way (not this one though but it is funny and precious in other ways).
We had this discussion before though. As Pernese covers go they are usually way down the list of appropriate, good covers but still... some pretty special editions had naked or scantily dressed women in funny positions on or near dragons, the very first publication of Dragonflight is the prime example!

As for why? One reason only: catch the eye!

There are many who make that mistake, P'ter

The use of the word Pernography (as far as I know coined by Anne herself) helps making that mistake

Congradulations Han, definatly the most hilarious cover I have seen yet.

I have recently found a copy of the book Alien Landscapes by Robert Holdstock & Malcolm Edwards at my local lbrary (not for sale, unfortunatly) and it has a chapter on Pern with several double page paintings of Pernese dragons by Roger & Linda Garland. I did not see these in your museum so you may want to look for them.

Has anyone here ever seen the illustrations for the Smallest Dragonboy in Science Fiction Tales? No naked ladies, but the ugliest dragons I have ever seen. Poor Heth, no wonder he was afraid nobody wanted him.

I don't think I've seen The Smallest Dragonboy in SF Tales -- I haven't made it a mission to find every reprint of that short story given the high number there are. Can you share any of the pictures with us?

UHm... I did a collecting highlight on Science Fiction Tales and Cheryl did one for the Holdstock book and both are illustrated! Cheryl already gave the link.

Here's the Smallest Dragonboy in its first publication medium, Sience Fiction Tales:
http://forums.srellim.org/showthread.php?t=5824

Tamara, I don't know, yes the dragons are ugly but they have something funny and special. Nowhere near what a Pernese dragon should of course but if we look at it purely as an illustration they have quality.

As for naked or near-naked ladies on dragons; I've got a whole sub-collection of cover art under that header

What Mawra says and in addition: if you have uploaded a picture to your blog it should be easy to link to it.

Right click on the pic in your blog, copy the URL of the picture (its location), go to your post, click the "insert picture" button and paste the address in the little popup windows. Easy does it.

Although pics of the book are not really necessary since Cheryl put up photographs of the Pern pages (the book will not fit on an A4 size scanner)

Just found out that I don't need to post the pictures, Han already did it..

http://forums.srellim.org/showthread.php?t=5824

There really funny looking, but as Han's says they have their own charm. I do like the camel/horsey shape of the head and the fact that the artist gave them jeweled eyes, something very few artist have done. But the rest of it
