Default Collecting advice welcome

I want to start a collection of Australian poetry manuscripts.

Any tips? Any suggestions?

What dealers do you know of?

Phillip, I'm not in to poetry, sorry. So no realy help here. But as far as general collecting. Start with what you love and can afford. And put away a few of your collecting dollars every month and save for those more expensive items as they crop up. Always get the best condition you can when buying too. And look in your local used book stores. Best way to find a good deal. And have friends who like to go 'booking' as I call it, keep an eye open for items you're looking for. Good hunting!!!

Let your local bookshops know what you are interested in. If they realise you are a collector they may start putting aside books for you.

Not into poetry either and certainly not Australian. I suppose you have collected quite a lot of data for your studies and favourite reading matter? You're probably the authority in this field rather than anyone here.

Uhm, one good advice: catalog what you have AND start catalogueing directly when you start to collect! That's tye best thing to do!

(as Cheryl and many others will agree)

Thank you for your collecting advice. I guess that I better start cataloguing my poetry books as well, while I think about it.

A very sly nag, Hans! I do of course concur with this advice. At this moment my collection is so large and cramped that it's hard to begin cataloging. *sigh*

Ghyle, definitely catalog the poetry books you already have, too!

More advice: let people know what you have and what you're interested in; maybe they'll keep an eye open for you, give you good tips.

I've received many a good Pern collecting tip from my peers!

I started cataloguing my poetry books last night. I thought it would be good to know what poems I have copies of, so I am indexing all the poems, at the same time.

Still on the first book, after 2 hours, The Collected Poems of Charles Harpur (up to page 722, with almost 280 to go!).

But you'll be SO grateful in time to come that you did it!

Especially when you are shopping for Anthologies and such.
