Default Dragon question

Anne always depicts dragons as eating fresh kill, except for hatchlings which are fed bucketsful of dollops of fresh meat cut to an appropriate size.

My question is: if a sweeprider or a hunting dragon came across a flood-plain littered with freshly drowned herdbeasts would the dragon eat them?

Well, if the dragon were hungry and it was a matter of minutes, probably they'd eat a few. I assume dragons' senses of smell are sensitive enough they'd know if the beasts had been dead too long to eat. Or they might be able to handle carrion, but it's unlikely the rider would let them at that point.

There's a scene, I think in Skies of Pern, where Ramoth calls in other dragons to help in the useful disposition of some carcasses.

I agree, if the dragon was hungry he/she certainly would.
And if it's not too far from the Weyr the dragonrider might alert some of his fellows.
If anything they are not going to waste anything on Pern! And I guess that the honest Weyr would deduct it from the tithe the owner of the dorwned beasts would have had to make

I think they would. After every gold flight there must be carcasses from blooding (do males blood as well?). So either people have to clean up and scavenge these animals for the table (ick) or have dragons finish them (or use them to feed canines, firelizards, etc).

I really didn't think of that one Altair. I was writing a fanfic at the time and decided that the dragon would prefer fresh meat - and that the beasts would have to be disemboweled immediately or they would swell up and not be fit food for man or beast.

A herdbeast completely drained of blood should have been quite edible, but would need to be cooked slowly in liquid (possibly in wine or ale).

I believe Jewish cuisine requires the blood to be drained by slitting the animal's throat or soaking the meat in salt-water.

Unfortunately the only internet site that had that fanfic was the "New Kitchen Table" which all the incarnations of seem to have vanished off the internet. My oldest son told me he'd backed up all my old computer onto dropbox, and I only had to download it from there. Whatever made it to dropbox is only giving me a "file conflict" message and the missing stuff does not appear to still be on the old computer either.
When last heard from him he was about to leave Australia for Canada via Los Angeles. I haven't heard where he got to yet.

Vyon, Simon's site is still up. It was hard to log into for a while but it's running again and here is the link I use to access it. <http://san-andreas.org.uk/phpBB3/> Maybe the fanfic is still there.

Thanks R'zil. I did get back in and the first 20 episodes with their notes are there. Another five episodes were written but never posted, I will probably have to reconstruct them.
To answer the original question, that particular dragon refused to eat the drowned beasts and hunted wild wherries instead. If the beasts aren't gutted immediately the pouch contents ferment - I can remember seeing a bloated beast floating down the river past our dairy farm only one day after a flood.
