Gold Sunset's Gold

Has anyone else received their copy of Sunset’s Gold?

My copy arrived yesterday in the mail to my surprise!! It might be because my last name starts with an A, but needless to say I was ecstatic.

It’s been a busy weekend so I’ve only had a chance to listen to a couple of the songs and I’m pleased to report that they are just as good, if not better than the Masterharper of Pern CD. I can't wait to give the CD a proper listen!!

When everyone receives their copies, let me know what you think!!

Will be soon now, I hope and trust... soon...

I guess you're right Hans. That is so unfair we have to wait so long for receiving overseas packages But I suppose a few thousand miles to cross are good reason for that...
I look forward receiving this CD! If I could, I just would open my mailbox every hour to find out if it's there at last.
I'm glad to hear it is close to Masterharper, I like this one very much! Thanks for your feedback Unicorntig!

Mine came in on Saturday Jan 10, and my last name starts with "W" -- I mentioned that I'd received it on the thread over here:
http://forums.srellim.org/showthread.php?t=6101
"Harper Hall CD from Opland-Freeman is Finished!"

Overall, I actually like the musical interpretation of this new CD better than the Masterharper CD. Yesterday I even found myself humming "Sweet Sea" while I was washing dishes.

I was actually disappointed in the content of Sunset's Gold. I expected there to be more uplifting tunes...these seem rather 'dark'. I realize some of the content is centered on tragedies/death, but it didn't thrill me as much as the MasterHarper did.

That might exactly be one of the reasons I find this CD better than the previous one... Ah, the joys of individuality

Hi Hans and all.
I don't often get the chance to check in at the old kitchen table, but have been interested to follow reactions to the new CD. We are delighted that just about everyone who pre ordered has now received their copy (PLEASE let us know if you haven't - they were mostly mailed the day they arrived!)
So far response has been very positive.
We're sorry to learn that it hasn't quite lived up to everone's expectations, with one observation that it might have been more uplifting, but we are at ease with the diversity of people and their tastes and opinions. Below is the text of an email I wrote last week.

"Since Menolly's story begins with the death of her most treasured and respected friend and tutor, and her life did have its trials, tribulations and sadness, it would have been negligent of us to present her experience as a rose bowl, so for sure there are sad moments. Although Song for Petiron, Sunset's Gold and Brekke's Cry are not exactly happy tunes for happy tales, it's hard to interpret Anne's lyrics any other way when they express such sadness, apprehension and pure terror! These were sad accounts of sad times. We rather hoped that the other nine tracks more than made up for that! I hope this to some degree explains why the CD sounds as it does, set as it is against the joys and sorrows of Menolly's life."

We tried to balance the inevitable sadness of some of Anne's lyrics with songs and tunes (like Gather Day and Hatching day) that reflect the joy of life on Pern in good times, and hope that for most of you we managed to do that. Please do continue to send any comments you like - we welcome your input and value your opinions! Mike Freeman

Mike (and Tania), personally I find this CD excellently balanced and, as you said, the first Harper Hall book doesn't exactly begins on uplifting themes and I never heard people complain about it On the contrary, so the music is true to the books!
The balance on this CD is also excellent and I personally find the merrier songs true to Menolly's heritage in that they are catchy and a joy to sing along with. And that is also true to what Anne wrote in the books!

That having been said one could wonder whether the songs should be absolutely true to the books apart from the text used.

I've said it personally to both of you in mail and I'll repeat it gladly here: congratulations on a wonderful CD and a job well done

Next stop: The Sunset's Gold Songbook

P.S. I suppose I have a bit of a melancholy streak as "Harper tell me of the road..." has actually been my favourite Pern songtext for a long time...
And welcome to The Board! Let's arrange for a live chat (in our chatroom) sometime in the future

Hi Mike (and Tania) . Welcome to the forum. Elizabeth (Lanen) would say "Hi" as well if she hadn't just gone to bed.

Hurray! My copy of Sunset's Gold has arrived at last, delayed for a day because the package ended up being held by the Post Office with a customs charge. The change in £/$ exchange rate put my package above the limit.

I really like the new CD and, like Hans, I think there's a good balance. Do I remember rightly some of those songs being sung at Anne's birthday party?

Hi Mike (& Tania)

I've really enjoyed both the MHoP & Sunset's Gold CDs. You've done a fantastic job of translating Anne's lyrics to music. Thank you so much for this!

"400 Turns" makes an great counterpoint to "Lessa's Ride" from the previous CD--damn! Anne was really trying to tell someone off with those lyrics

Do you think there's any chance of Anne has a draft of the "Ballad of Moreta's Ride" floating about that you can expand upon...?

But even if you can't do that song, I'd still like to see some more Pern music from you guys. You've proved you are master harpers with the first CD & you've proved it again with this one
