Klah family discussion

I recently finished reading The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe to my kids for the first time, and tonight we watched the movie together.

Somehow the post-movie going-to-bed discussion got around to fan fiction and copyright rules.

I don't think this comes up in most families, does it?

Oh, I don't know. My older brother and I get into a lot of discussions about all sorts of things. We've definitely discussed fan fiction and copyright rules. One of my favorite discussions was after we watched Watchmen we had a huge debate about the morality of arithmetic and whether the needs of the many outweighed the needs of the one or the few.

Maybe not when I was tiny but Mum and I have swapped and discussed books since well before I went to Secondary School.

That's impressive. Is that because your children wanted to write some Narnia stories themselves?

I used to use English lessons at primary school as an excuse to write Star Trek stories, but I never once thought about the copyright, or that someone else might possibly own the Star Trek idea.

Lanen and I watched The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe as an antidote to all the snow around us. Then I went out and fought the witch with a shovel and a brush.

Hoping Lanen made a photo of that might be too much to ask for I suppose?

They're not preschoolers anymore, they're in first grade now!

But I should have put that in my original post that it doesn't come up with 7 year olds that often!

Something like that. They were speculating on how the final book ends, and my son said maybe the author would write another book. I explained that he was dead and so he said maybe he'd write an eighth book. Thus launched the discussion of fan fiction and copyright, though I never used those terms.

There are hundreds of ways a child can hear a term, not just from a family. I know I sometimes use a term my parents never ever use, just because I read it somewhere or heard it.
I started a topic about copyright with my family, but I was way into high school by then and had a lesson on copyrights in my IT class. I suppose most families don't discuss that, at least not with kids so small.

Ooops! How time does fly. Trite but true... Still, I think they're quite young to be discussing such things. Still, great if they like to read, and to listen to adults reading to them.

No, sorry. The photographer is rarely photographed. The witch has broken my brush (actually it hit a block of ice and snapped) but we're armed with two shovels now.

My granddaughter is in first grade this year and when she reads books she always reads them cover to cover, including the library of Congress number. I think they are teaching them about these things earlier than they used to. Still, its remarkable that your kids wondered about that. Most kids would have just said they want to make a story about the world in the book. Could it be they've heard Mom mention such things in their hearing?

Kibbie & I have talked about copy write laws and stuff. She is much older and is writing fan fiction.
I think the earlier they learn about copy write & stuff the better. When they start doing reports or writing stories they need to know about copy write and how to give credit when needed.

It does with myself and my friends, avid fanfic readers/writers. And also with my kids. My daughter is old enough to read some of the books I have read, and she realizes that some of what she sees on the computer screen involves the same characters. We also talked about it when she did her first science project in the 3rd grade because we had to print some items from the computer.

Not copyright rules, but ds#1 has been telling/writing fanfic since he was 3 when he disagreed with the ending of an audio book we were listening to during dinner. He rewrote the ending.
