Default Zombie Dragonriders!

Well, not quite literally, but who would have made a good dragon-rider from those many notables (and not-quite-so) who have lived and passed on to the great green disco in the sky? Would J. Edgar Hoover have made a spiffing green rider? Could you see Sylvia Plath on a dragon? What historical persons would have been ideal with a dragon, and why?

Well .... I think that Margaret Thatcher on a gold would be a disaster, but Princess Anne would be really good.

Maggie could be a good candidate for a non-canon hatching, wherever there would be an Iron Dragon for the Iron Lady

Amelia Earhart and Princess Di would be amazing weyrwomen, and somehow I think Douglas Adams would be right at home as a Weyrharper. Dunno why, but that's just the feeling I get.

(And Benjamin Franklin would also be a great choice for a Harper, as innovative as he was.)

I'll try to think of more.

From memory, didn't Franklin start out as a publisher or printer? That would be a good start, after all, no?

Well I think I'd make a lousy rider. I'd get half-way through a fall and I'd have a brilliant idea for carrying twice as much spare firestone with me ..... and I'd forget to duck!

Very true! Come on, the inventor of the stove, people? And bifocals?

Princess Di? Only a junior weyrwoman if that. Send her off to be some Lord Holder's wife where she can give out the annual Turn's End gifts to holders in need.

I REALLY don't think it would be a good idea to give Sylvia Plath access to something capable of both time travel and instant guaranteed suicide.

Amelia Earhart--green rider! Queens spend too much time on the ground. Fast, agile, and with the fighting wings.

George Washington would have done quite nicely as Lord of Fort Hold, but then again in his younger days what a bronze rider!

LOL--George S. Patton, Weyrleader! "We're not just going to burn the Thread. We're going to RIP OUT ITS GUTS AND USE THEM TO DECORATE OUR WEYRS."

Well, for one thing, you have an expanded vocabulary (ie. you say more than "Braaiiinnnsss"), and you've only occasionally tried to gnaw on a head, and in all those cases it was on the head of a beer

Now, just burning Thread sounds awfully boring, don't you think? Only normal people do that!

On the subject of Amelia Earhart, has anyone heard Elizabeth (Bessie) Coleman? She was actually flying before Amelia Earhart, but didn't have near the distance.

Between the pair of them, the male green riders better watch out!

I would TOTALLY SIGN UP FOR THIS WEYR.

(For those who have only seen the movie "Patton"--google the opening speech and see what he really said. They PRETTIED IT UP for the movie.)

Yes, they did pretty it up, and while Patton's speech was great motivation for a bunch of guys about to go into combat, it would come across as pretty over-the-top, carpet-chewing stuff for a cinema audience--not to mention over-long.

As cinema, the version George C. Scott delivered captured the gist, was more compact, and in the case of the entirely fictional line I bastardized, actually better than the original. And that's something you won't see me say very often about a Hollyweird production.

"Now, I want you to remember that no bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country."--The Screenwriters of Patton

Not that a lot of what old Blood & Guts said wasn't brilliant in its context:

It was a little long-winded. Also, given the year the movie was made I believe there was some vocabulary that, while accurate, they couldn't put in without pushing their rating beyond where they wanted it to go.

Would P'ton the dragonrider have an ivory-handled belt knife? (Because only pimps in cheap Bitran whorehouses have pearl handles on their belt knives.)

I think he'd make a good Meron.

Well, I'd say Abraham Lincoln, Brown rider, but still became weyrleader. (probably become Weyrleader L'oln)

Einstein, and Davinci would be great to imagine on pern, but either of them would be tangling with Fandarel, and/or Wansor, with their notions of the universe, nuclear physics, and flying machines.

You want a weyr harper? The King, put Elvis Presley on a dragon. "But don't you step on my blue Memphuth"

Ghost: Anne describes dragon skin as "suede" like (DQ); so perhaps P'ley's dragon is called Shooth! And if he was naughty he'd serve his time in a Rock-house Gaol

I like the idea of Elizabeth I on a queen, or even being a Lady Holder. Rasputin could probably be a good dragonrider, or even one of the "spy" harpers.

According to one source (but only one that I can find) he was found guilty and spent some time in gaol for it. Which considering the prevalence of caning, birching and generally thumping boys around that was common in his time takes some doing.

He also arranged a number of Scottish folk songs. The gentleman who translated the lyrics from the Gaelic was a Fellow at a Cambridge college and thus was not allowed, by university statute to increase his stipend. So he was paid in books!
