Default Anne's attendance at Dragon*Con 2011 cancelled!

Some of you already now but Anne McCaffrey, her daughter Gigi and son Todd McCaffrey will be attending Dragon*Con. Health permitting of course, but Bill Fawcett, Draon*Con director, assured me personally (yesterday, July 9th) that the official decision has been taken.

Anne would be delighthed so see lots of fans at the Con and especially at Weyrfest, so if you have the chance do go to Atlanta this year!

Atlanta in August. Hot as the hinges of - er - The Bad Place. Never mind, Anne will light it up!

How wonderful that Anne is feeling up to going! That's brilliant. And with Todd and Gigi looking after her* - great, great news!

Yes, its good to read that Todd and Gigi are coming too. Yes, its can get warm and muggy down there, had some kin that lived just wee bit north of there.

Still undecided but trying to arrange accommodation - may have part of a floor in the Marriott (depends on the other occupants who are old friends from the KT).

Really want to see Anne at D*Con.

Need a new passport first though!

Besides we(the husband and I had such a great time at the BatB Con in New Orleans we signed up for next years in Dallas already, and as we're bringing the kid as well we'll be saving for that.)

But we'll see...

I would love to see Anne again. I'd love to have had the intimate get togethers that were had at EuroCon. That's something that does not happen at Dragon*Con. Why, I don't know. There could be a "dinner with Anne" planned, and perhaps that is something someone could suggest this year?! I know that the convention makes demands on her, but at her age it would seem that she ought to get to relax a bit and just enjoy her fans?

Something on the order of a Gather feast?

I don't know about a Gather feast. Perhaps a dinner at a local restaurant. There'd have to be a limit to the number of people who could go. Maybe a raffle, everyone who is interested puts in their name and at the convention Anne picks out the names from a hat? I don't know. I'm sure someone could come up with something. Other years you barely got to see her, except when she was on stage or being hustled through the hallways with an entourage "guarding" her and yelling "make way, make way!"

Cilla...Eurocon was so wonderfully intimate...for all of us. Many of us had already had the great good fortune of meeting Anne before we went to Copenhagen and a few that were there, are some of her personal friends..Anneli, Hans, Elizabeth and Steven...so she wasn't dinning with just a group of fans but with friends and friends of friends.

I hope that she will feel strong enough to be able to get togeter with some of her fans at DragonCon.

B U T...at this point just getting there for her is a huge achievement and I as a fan of hers would be thrilled just to see her on stage again...telling her stories and joking with everyone, like she always has.

Good Luck to all those of Anne's fans headed to DragonCon this year...I'm soooo jealous...I loved to see her again and say *HI*. All of you going...enjoy it for all of us that can't make it...DRAT, drat....D R A T !!!

I think that's the point. Dragon*Con has the potential to be intimate with Anne, but it has never been. I don't expect that to change if she is able to go this year, but it would be nice if it did.

We could bring the possibility of a "private" dinner to her or to director Bil Fawcett's attention. Maybe people would even consent to buy a place at the table with the proceeds going to a good (US) charity?

However...

Even in Copenhagen it wasn't sure of Anne felt up to it until maybe only a few hours before dinner. The small group of fans that had dinner with Anne apart from that horrible "official Eurocon dinner" was highly flexible and had Anne pleaded fatigue we would have easily had dinner without her.

I'm afraid that if Anne / the DC management were to create expectations... you get the picture.

Well, I won't be there. I was just thinking out loud how nice it would be if some more people than those who usually get to spend all the time with Anne at Dragon*Con actually got to see her for a short while. Certainly, her rest time and her health are top priority, followed by what Dragon*Con itself expects her to do.

The big news is I am going, flight and hotel booked - I got a really great deal that I am happy with. Passport to be sent for tomorrow (need new photos). My v cheap hotel (£35pn approx but is part of a host hotel chain ) is near the airport with a free shuttle to the terminal for the MARTA. Only problem is getting back late but I can budget for a shuttle bus and/or stay on the floor of my mates (from York ) room for when I really want to stay late!

The last time I went to Dragoncon Anne was there and on Monday she spent most of the day in the Weyrfest room. It was not advertised so it was not crowded. It was VERY nice.

Todd will definitely be there (I suspect). IF you are planning your entire trip on the absolute need to see Anne and that is your only or even main reason for going I would say it's a lot of money to spend for the possibility of being in the same room with her for a short while, quite likely not having the chance to speak to her, perhaps not even getting a book signed (the line was huge last time I went and that's at least 5 years ago, and I don't even know if she's up to scheduled book signings any more). However, there is a lot that goes on at Dragon*Con and if we could get hotel rooms we'd probably still be going. Don't let me discourage you, I have absolutely no idea whether she will go or not. Last minute changes have happened before.

She would be my main reason for going, but not for autographs of meeting or anything like that, not really into signatures or anything of people I don't know. Just would want to hear her speak if I could.

What do you mean "if we could get hotel rooms?" Does Dragon Con work differently than other major cons?

I've only been to Dragon*Con and Albacon, two complete ends of the convention spectrum in size I suspect. Dragon*Con used to control the availability of hotel rooms to guests by the use of a code that was only posted on a specific day, and you had to make reservations using that code. The past few years the hotels seem to have taken over and it's seemed like too much of a free for all with rooms being sold out in entire hotels within minutes of the date the hotels post they will begin taking reservations. I think it is possible (maybe) to still get a room at the host hotels at a non-convention rate, or at one of the hotels that is not as close to the convention. Maybe you could find someone who needs a roommate? It all became just too much hassle for us and we moved on to doing other things.

You don't have to stay at the con hotels - it's easier and more convenient - but not compulsary. You do have to pay for the con though!!

I've taken advantage of a great deal with expedia for a long term stay at an airport hotel. If I really need to stay over night I have great friends who have offered me a piece of their floor (or even a bed!) for the con nights (thinking of Weyrfest and Werewolf here ) I also need an hotel for another 3/4 nights after the con.

Lady M - by no means am I even close to the record for con-going

Judging by what director Bill Fawcett said to me, what her daughter Gigi said and the state of health Anne was in when I saw her last April, I'd say it is pretty sure she will attend the con.
She might not be as available to fans as the years before but something serious should happen to prevent her of attending DC 2011

I haven't read this entire thread in detail, so I apologize if I restate something Hans or Cheryl or anyone else has covered.

Yes, Anne is definitely coming. Her appearances will be pretty well restricted to one big event a day, given that she's 85 years old and 40,000 people is a lot to navigate even for the most ambitious con-goer. That's not even factoring the round-trip transatlantic journey.

As most of the McCaffrey-Johnson clan is also scheduled to attend, it's likely that the demands on her time and health will probably negate the possibility of anything "intimate" like a dinner or daylong stay in the Weyrfest track room. Anne DOES very much like to spend time with her fans, and I know that she's going to want to be out and about as much as possible! However, her well-being is and has to be our absolute top priority. We don't want her to overextend herself!

THAT said, Anne IS scheduled for a couple of very cool panels throughout the con (e.g., not all of them are with Weyrfest), including one with Todd, Bill Fawcett... and Michael Whelan! I am really, really, REALLY excited to meet him. I put him on two Weyrfest panels as much for my benefit as everyone else's. ;>

Jody, Elizabeth Moon, Chelsea Quinn Yarbro, and S.M. Stirling are also on our schedule, as well as a whole bunch of other artists, editors, and publishers. I just got our full schedule up on our LiveJournal and brand-spankin'-new Facebook pages, so please take a look at that if you guys want to see what we have planned for this year.

Incidentally, Anne is due to be at a book signing, but we don't know exactly when that's supposed to be scheduled for. I'll do a post when we know, so folks can plan accordingly.

Hope that answers everyone's questions for now! :>

Also want to sort out my D*C "registration" details (I may be able to speed up my onsite registration).

Thinking about the name on my badge - how does "KC from MoM and NKT" sound/look?

Did a little shopping at the weekend.

Got Anne a little pressie using info gained a few years ago from Anneli Hope she's allowed it but I doubt it will go to waste

I did think of Pam doing it though - may even go back

Starting to worry about how many books to take - weight wise.

Getting the latest book for my bday - need Todd to sign all since 2008 and Anne to sign as many as she can. Not planning on too much but there are a couple of books which I wasn't able to get signed in Copenhagen which will take priority.

I'm sorry to disappoint, kc -- though this should make your load lighter -- but at Dragon*Con Anne typically has a one-book signing limit. Even at 28, I would find it very hard to sign hundreds of books over and over again; at 85, it's much more difficult. I know she would LIKE to be able to sign more, but we usually cut it off at one or it just gets to be too much. (Personally, I don't like to ask authors to sign more than two books even in the best circumstances. It seems inconsiderate to them and to the people behind me.)

I can double-check with Todd (and he, of course, will usually sign a couple) to see if this has changed -- but don't plan on bringing half your library with you! You must choose wisely. :>

Cav - don't worry I know the score, I used Book Plates in Australia as I was travelling for 5 weeks.

I have the 2 I would like signing by Anne - non Fiction. But I also need reading material for 12 days, hence the Todd books!

Whatever I bring may go back unsigned but if I don't have them with me I can't get it done can I?

My wife and I got time off. We'll be there! Yay I hope to run into some of you nice folk. Know I don't post a ton, but I still like everyone here!

Now from what I'm reading this thing is pretty spread out, so where should I go for Anne stuff? It turns out my wife's uncle lives in Atlanta, so we have free board with him. Just looking for where to hang out.

The best place to find out what Anne is doing and when will be the Weyrfest Room. You'll get a map when you register the first day. You also get a booklet when you register giving times, rooms, and who is doing a lecture/show/whatever at that time. Take a few minutes with that book to "map" out your weekend so that you don't miss out on something you really want to see. I found it pretty confusing finding various rooms in all the different hosting hotels, but just about everyone there is really friendly and if you ask around I'm sure someone will send you in the right direction. What they "need" is a GPS system that would direct you to different rooms in the hotels when you punched in a time and activity.
