Default Pern Demographics

Just to say that these webpages which have been offline for a while are now back. They cover various nitpickings about Thread, economics and such.

Thanks for bringing them back. I've run my own demographic calculations in the past, long after yours went offline, and my independent analyis is broadly in agreement with yours - you need a lot more dragon deaths than are mentioned on the page if you want to have queens clutching as often as they're shown to in the books, even if you downscale queen Averageth to half the fertility of Ramoth (or less). Deaths in training are the easiest way to balance the numbers, and keep the (shown) replacement birth rate of dragons balanced by the (unknown) equal death rate. I'm inclined to up the casualties to closer to 50% for Weyrlings training to go between, fighting thread in the Weyrling wing, and surviving their first couple of turns in the fighting wings - that way, from my evil, fic-writing perspective, I can keep more eggs on the sands, and add extra drama to the lives of the poor dragonriders.

I'm curious, Hartley. What made you decide to bring the Pern Demograhics back online?

Good to see them and you back.

Since our favorite author is no longer with us, she can't be used directly by the Church of Scientology and I can no longer be disgusted by seeing her name associated with the nasty cult founded by evil guru L Ron Hubbard.

In the midst of re-reading Dragongirl, and what you've said has essentially been confirmed; Kindan goes over Records and concludes that three dragons die out of every hundred per Fall (five out of every hundred at Benden, but they note that could be due to the Plague), and Lorana makes a tally of her own that suggests the queens clutch enough to replace them (H'nez states earlier the rate is twice a year with an average clutch of twenty-eight eggs).

I haven't done the math to see what this works out at, but it's good to know the authors are thinking along the same lines as the fans; it makes it easier to work in such theories.
