He opened a site to sell the prints himself, David Fairbrother Roe I mean. Several people inquired, Tony and I among them but it never came to be.

I am not sure what I am seeing, it doesn't show the dragons head, that I can see. What is sticking out of the dragon? Is it my bad eyes, or am I not seeing something that I should. This doesn't look right!!

Personally, I like his dragons more than any others......even Steve Westons.
But then, I've liked David Roe's work since the Nazareth LP cover for Hair of the dog in the mid 70's.

Cheryl, Thank you, for the bigger view, but it didn't help. And now I can see pretty good. I am just not sure what part is dragon, and what is the rest. But it does have a very romantic, Russian art kind of feel. Nice feeling but not great on the dragon, in my opinion.

I would agree that it has a Russian feel to it as well. But the poor dragon is in desparate need of a lower jaw!

I think that the artistic part is fabulous, and well drawn, but it is not a dragon as I see it in my minds eye. It is not a Pern dragon at all in it's features. But it does have a lovely fantasy feel to it.

Thank you so much Cheryl for putting this extra large picture up for "Patch" to see.

You are quite right, Maelin, quite right. As cover art goes it is top notch but it just doesn't appeal to anyone's vision of a Pern dragon, obviously

I agree, it's a great looking piece of art, but not a Pern dragon. Too many extra bits floating about. Michael Whelan has the best concept, to me. Course, The White Dragon was the first of Anne's books I ever read and it was his artwork on the cover that drew me to read the book. So very sentimental to me also.

Coelura, I think that Michael Whelan's dragons are truly fantastic. They have all of the feeling of Pern in his pictures, although the dragon it's self is still not quite right according to Anne's writings. Of all of the cover artist that have been on the Pern books Michael's are by far the best, in my opinion.

I've seen some of Michael Whelan's other drawings and think they're the best. But then each of us here, have a different point of view of how a dragon, especially PERN DRAGONS, look. Besides after re-reading the White Dragon, isn't Ruth not completely white but with subtle shadings of all dragon colours? After all Jaxom asks N'ton about it when he's finished washing Ruth down and N'ton agreed that Ruth wasn't a true white dragon but all the dragon colours combined underneath.

Yep, when the light hits Ruth just right all colors of dragons are visible. I kind of imagine it as like rainbow coloring. I do love that scene.

I like Michael Whelan's art period. From what I've read he actually read the books before he did the covers. So he had a fair understanding of Anne's dragons. More than other artists do or get. Some only get an outline type of thing I heard. So if what they get doesn't give a really good description then they just do what they want.

Slightly off topic, but Whelan did a picture of a small child on a moon, in a space suit with a bucket and shovel, like being at the beach. That one always reminds me of Tia from Partnership.

I know the pic you mean Becky, and I love it (though I think you mean Tia from The Ship Who Searched).

I grew up with the Whelan covers, and they do seem to fit the basic descriptions in the books, so to me they are the right embodiment of a Pernese dragon. We're lucky that Whelan had read the books before doing the art -- I believe he read the first two as a general sf fan initially, then got asked to do artwork for DF, DQ, and WD when WD was originally released.

Les Edwards I like too, as being the next closest to matching my impression from the books.

I am one of the odd folk who much prefer Dave Roe's White Dragon to the Whelan version, even if Anne thinks otherwise!
I can see that it isn't a pernese dragon. but then I don't see Whelan's as right either ,even if it is closer to what is in my head
Anyway, for those who don't have a copy of the poster that's signed by Dave and Anne, here is a picture for you to be sick on!

I might have to do that pic again in daylight, that looks terrible Maybe I won't use my phone either!

It might not "be" a Pernese dragon, the artwork is great

David, or rather a relative, started to (at east try to) sell posters on "his own website" a few years ago. Many were interested but as far as I know the thing never materialized.

I can never work out how a piece of rock that thin (and fractured) is staying up or whether Ruth is actually flying carrying it and an incredibly insensitive Jaxom.
