By the way, can I correct my answers? I don't have a copy available, so it would just be rehashing the questions in my head... or maybe I'll just win by default!!!

I've remembered why I took up setting trivia on AMCF rather than taking part. Being a No.1 Sievehead, I can never remember enough to answer correctly.
And in spite of having read Dragon Singer many times, the same thing was going to happen here
So I printed the questions, armed myself with a pencil and sat in a cosy spot and re-read the book, answering the questions as I went; as a result I expect to have 100% correct.
For this reason I am not going to enter them in the contest
Which brings up a point - what is trivia intended to do? How many of us have such excellent memories that the correct answers will come to mind?
Or is it intended to encourge folk to read and re-read the books.
I had a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon lost at Harper Hall

Great questions Ghyle - thank you for reminding me I should re-read the book every now and again.

We don't mind if you use your memory, or if you use the book. It's all good.

By all means, send the answers in.

Psst! Discovered a trick question and made a last minute alteration

Have decided I like going through a book picking out answers, as well as picking out questions.

Ghyel, A REALLY sneaky thing I have been doing is to jumble up the questions so you dont find them in chronological order as you read

Whew!!! Glad you didnt do that

Ghyle, I've just remembered something that has nothing at all to do with the current trivia, didnt know where else to put it

I've forgotten the exact details now, but one of the questions I asked in a trivia no one could answer, then at last someone did, and others said, it doesnt say that in my book
So I found the exact quote in my book and got someone who didnt have it to compare - and that few sentences was indeed, missing from her book

I wonder would Cheryl know, how common is this likely to be - it's never been a problem before, but I thought it worth posting about

I'm not sure how likely a problem that would be, but I'm sure C'ris and I can handle it if it arises, especially with such volumes as Dragonsdawn, which has a number of variations among editions.

If it comes up, it comes up, and we'll adapt, no doubt.

Thank you! Thank you!
I checked my answers and was absolutely gobsmacked at the one I got wrong!!!!
Fortunately I mark the page number as I go through the book so it was easy to find

Gobsmacked! Sigh!

But I did enjoy it- and read the book again while I was checking!!!!

Oh Joy!!!! I got a custom title! How long does that last???
Now, if I find lots to post about maybe I can get away from the one I had before? What was it? something creepycrawlie

It's a bit rare in terms of managing to ask a trivia question that can only be answered with the right transatlantic edition of the book, but it's not at all uncommon for there to be differences between the books. In the experience of myself, Anneli, and Hans, we've found that UK books are more likely to contain those extra sentences and details that have been cut from the US edition -- so anyone having access to both versions should use the US ones for trivia.

I tend to use UK ones for the discussions-being the easiest ones to find here! perhaps I should state at the beginning of the discussion which edition I'm using!

Will try for Nerilka's story as a trial maybe.

For discussion I doubt it's as important, as you're not likely to be using obscure sentences as the basis of discussion items, and generally the differences between editions are obscure rather than major (with exceptions like whether Kitti Ping is Wind Blossom's mother or grandmother...). But it wouldn't hurt to mention it briefly somewhere.

Anywhere that anyone is posting a quote from a book, it's best to reference it by page number, chapter, and book edition (including country or printing as well as paperback/hardback/bookclub). In many of the books - especially the Pern ones, the chapters aren't numbered which makes them hard to reference. In that case - and actually even if they are - it can be useful not just to give the page number, but cite the total number of pages as well. In that way one can figure roughly how far into the book a reference is, which makes it much easier to look up in a different book.

For example: "I am already clean, you polka-dotted idiot, Faranth said in an excellent mimicry of one of Sorka’s favorite admonitions. I was nearly dry, and now my oiling has to be to done again." Dragonsdawn page 275/363, US mass market paperback

Cheryl, perhaps we could cite the publisher & year as well.

Eg.: Nerilka's Story p. 67/182 (US: Del Ray, 1987)

what I was thinking was as i tend to find a lot of quotes etc-
at the mo I don't quote much cos it gets hard to say where it is I could set up a thread and post the edition. most of them are modern corgis but i've a couple of hardbacks, then you don't need to post it every new thread on the topic.
