How did they come to exist? They're one of the more beloved creatures from a McCaffrey world and I'm sure people around here would like to know

Pam,

Sorry for the long delay...been writing. Almost....there....

The globe frogs came about because we needed a critter who was the real power behind the power behind the thrones in The Ship Who Won. They had to be somewhat unobtrusive, yet present, since all fair mysteries foreshadow the solution. The clue was right under the humans' noses (in Carialle's case, nosecone) all the time: the long hands and fingers, which we were careful to describe in great detail. It didn't hurt that the frogs were cute, too. Their culture just grew up as the story unfolded. Like humans they have great small-motor control, so their technology can be nicely complex. Also, like humans, they like their politics, so those are byzantine, too.

It's gratifying that the globe frogs have come to be so well liked. I'm fond of them myself. Somewhere in my myriad unfinished projects is the pattern for a fluffy one (stuffed, to American readers) that I was making for Anne out of green velvet. Heaven only knows, after at least one house move, where it has gone.

Just about to leave for the World Science Fiction Convention, where I'll be getting together with Anne.

Hope to see many of you in Atlanta for DragonCon.

Jody

*emotes envy of Jody and Anne getting together in Glasgow when fate has ruled that I can't make it after all despite nearly a year's planning*

BUT:

*wishes them both a great time there*

Ah, this is probably the perfect place to post my picture of a globefrog, hopefully I can get some feedback from Jody on what to add or change

Very nice pic, SS! (and I didn't mean the scarcely clad lady on top op the pic in the add, though I couldn't help noticing and admiring)

Yep, the picture's not bad. I didn't see the half-nudded up lady, though, so I don't know what got Hans all hetted up.

Must be, Hans!

They must know I'm impecunious: all I ever see is the word "advertisement". Is this saying something, perhaps?
