Default A Question For The Admin/Hosts

Could any Admin or Host please let me (and through this Thread, the others) know why there is no ability to upload Attachments in Posts here?

Was just curious.

Remember the OKT where only hosts had customized avatars and no smileys in the sig?

Kugai, we are still looking into what will be convenient and what we want to allow, using IMG code and/or have people able to use attachments or neither; if yes, in which fora etc.

Point with AMCF is that I had the obtions enabled for all fora from the beginning; which maybe wasn't the wisest choice, I dunno. What will peeps do when they reached the limit? What will be the effect on the serverspace (AMCF has not a dedicated server but a regular ISP deal, if very accomodating and big) if people post a lot of pics, etc. etc. Ah well it will work itself out. I do know that the long picture threads on AMCF (in the lounge and the ignore thread in H&S) are slowing themselves down considerably now they reached multiple pages of 50 posts.

Since with MoM we are on a highly secure and protected server we have a different situtation on our hands and we would like to look at things closely before taking any decisions.

lol Jax.

Actually, I think all of on here would like to know the answer to that question.

OK Hans, thanks for the reply. I have reached my alloted limit on NKTL, I made no bones about that in the 'Please Ignore' Thread there myself, and won't be able to Post there again until that Thread falls off the map or is Archived.

As you are aware Hans, Jaxie, I have respected the limits placed on Pics there and have 'Self Censored' any that I felt would be 'Innapropriate' for the site.

So far, with the similar Thread I have started in PFBB, there has been no problems, and Kool has had no worries over what I have Posted there so far (I get the impression that if he felt I had gone too far, he'dve dealt with it quite quickly)

Hope we can start Posting images here sometime soon, and whatever limits you set, I will hold to.

James

Eh, Kugai, you do know you can simply delete the oldest pics, don't you? If not, go into CP (Control Panel, top let in VB menubar). The last item you see in the left hand menu is for managing attachments. You can chose which to leave and which to delete.

You obviosuly do not at this point but I wondered if people would start posting under their secondary backup account when they reached their limit on their primary account

Don't expect an answer real soon here. First we'll have a major spring cleaning err... call it major upheaval/rearrangement of the whole board here... *suspense hangs in the air*

And that's precisely why I havent deleted them Jax. Why spoil it for any others who might not have seen them yet by deleteing them. I'd rather leave them up fot latecomers to see than have them miss out on the fun and games that we've had putting them up.

There are firewall issues that prevent the uploading of attachments (and avatars for that matter, unfortunately). I might eventually sic my husband on that problem, but right now I'm not bothered enough by it to bother him...

I'm thinking about turning IMG code on...

That'd be cool, especially if you ask people to use thumbnails for bigger pix. Photobucket has this nifty script that generates ubb code and html thumbnails for you.

Of course, you can already post links to pix in your posts as it is. According to Scott at AMCF it's not possible to turn IMG code on in just one forum, it's either all or nothing.

Shows what he knows

In other words, dear granath, it's the exact opposite. It is a setting per forum When I set up amcf it was decided to leave it enabled because of the gracious gesture of Ian to donate more than ample space we dodn't have to put restrictions on space used, especially because there is a limit per user that can be set.

Sorry Hans, you lost me. IMG code is disabled at AMCF, much to my chagrin. The filesize limits on uploads are ridiculously low there in any case. Using thumbnails would avoid the problem of too heavy traffic for dialup users. Some forums have the option of automatically turning an uploaded picture into a thumbnail, notably the otherwise very limited invision powerboard.

I don't think we need to keep pictures banned on the off-chance that someone may post something inappropriate. Compared to the times I've seen people reprimanded for flames, pictures are a much, much smaller problem. So hosts needn't fear needing to check every single pic to see if it's appropriate or not. Or at any rate, that's a spurious reason not to allow pix. Bandwidth and server space are another issue entirely, and a totally legitimate reason to ban uploads. However, hotlinked pix from a resource such as photobucket don't take up any server resources or bandwidth from the forum...

True, Granath, I confused the issue. Attachements was left on at amcf, not IMG code. However, it can be set seperately for each forum, which I also did on old KT where the hosts were able to use IMG code in one of their office forums but the members couldn't use it in other fora.

I don't think the max of 39Kb is so low for (picture) attachments it keeps people (very) aware of what they are doing, it's just inconveient for those who don't or can't resize pics. Slightly bigger could be allowed but not much. The important thing is the (I think) 600 or 650 Kb limit on atatchements; so if people would be able to post 100 Kb pics, they would only be able to have 6 on the board at each time. Problem there is that people (on other boards) often make an extra account to post pics

In the end however you are absolutely right, thumbnails or hotlinking to pictures hosted on other, specialised sites is easy and doesn't take any space on the forumboard server It's just less elegant.

Less elegant? It depends on your point of view I suppose. If you only post at one or two boards, I might agree with you... However, I post regularly at about 10 boards and occasionally at another 5. I think it's far simpler and more elegant to upload a pic once to photobucket, and then post the link everywhere, than it would be to post the same pic in 15 different places. Especially given that I have about 20 GB worth of pix on my computer, and they're not always very well organized...

Hadn't considered that because I usually post pics in context and almost never post a pic on more than one board (even though I am active on more). But your argument is valid, granath. No problem though because "your way" have always been available, wasn't it? So for that way of posting pics admin of bulletin boards need not do anything.

You don't need to be especially computer savvy to use facilities as photobucket and imageshack but I do think that absolute beginners might need some help with them..?

Hans, size limits on both pictures and total are easily dealt with as you no doubt know.

Over at PF, there are virtually no limits to picture size, as I can attest with my Thread over there. I have no Idea if Kool and/or Tek have set a limit to the total number yet, (though I get the impression they haven't), but I have uploaded several pics on there that are well over the 100kb limit. I'm not sure if they're eventually going to set a limit, as Kool said that they have a lot of Server space at the moment.

Well, no. That's just it. IMG code's disabled there and looks like remaining that way. I'm just wondering if we couldn't enable them here. Absolute beginners might need some help in posting IMG code, but I've written the instructions for other sites and can do so again if necessary.

IMG code is on in all forums now (or should be, if I missed one let me know!)

For examples of how to use image code, go here:

Testing:

These are clickable thumbnails, so if you want to see a bigger pic, just click!

They're done with the photobucket "generate HTML and IMG code" script, and very handy it is too. Saves bandwidth for those on dialup.
