We know very, very little of how dragons think, or why they do the things they do. Maybe to dragons, HADs mentally "smell" good, or are like "listening" to pleasant music. Why do I find mezzo-sopranos' voices appealing to a degree that I pick them out of songs and conversations without trying? It's something I'm attuned to, but the next person could care less. Perhaps they prefer a contralto or soprano, or perhaps they're simply not receptive to such a thing at all. With the dragons, we just don't know and they don't seem inclined to explain. Perhaps listening in to a HAD's mind is the dragon equivalent of chocolate; not many people dislike chocolate, so it would be a rare dragon that wasn't partaking of the treat of a HAD's mind. Perhaps some dragons do ignore a HAD; we haven't seen this, but perhaps it happens. After all, did Lessa ever have control of the Old Timers' dragons? Maybe they chose not to listen to her.

Sorry everyone!! This is is off-topic. . .

but I just got the coolest mental image of Canth with a big mug of klah/hot chocolate, watching it snow outside. That'd have to be a BIG MUG!!

With F'nor, and Brekke with own mugs with him, watching from their weyr?

And I just had a tiwg of idea, Canth told F'nor Brekke was safe during the "Fireball Flood" in SoP.

Alessan had the empathy for both dragons and runners and Oklina is sentive to what going, on be Searched and the trips to gather what was needed.

I don't have the book in front of me, but I had a real strong impression when reading 'The Ford of Red Hanrahan' that he or his wife, or maybe both had undergone mentasynth. Anyone else get that feeling?

Book not to hand either, at the moment (atm) couldn't see to read it.

Red's wife had a good sense on what type of dragon would hatch, and for kids. Also Red worked better with the older ones than younger ones.

Strange, I didn't even know anyone (rider on not) could tell, apart from the queen egg, which colour is in which egg.

That was Zulaya in DragonsEye/Red Star Rising.

BTW, I think mentasynth was no longer approved of for humans by the time of the Pern expedition, but had been used in the past, and descendants of mentasynth-enhanced humans were superior healers due to their increased empathy.

Thanks for the name, and yes, they could be desendents of those who were mentasynth-enhanced foks, also the dolphins who came with the Pern expedition also were given that treament which help them to understand their water home, and work better with humans.

Oh, I'm reading First Fall now (sort of I started reading First Fall, but I got caught up with books for school, and now got The count of Monte Cristo, so First Fall is put aside for now). But Red Star rising will soon follow.

The reference was: '. . . the fire-lizard's arrival merely confirmed the presentiment of trouble that Rosheen had confided in him three days ago.'
No indication of what kind of trouble she was expecting --- maybe just that feeling you sometimes get when you're being watched?

Too vague a feeling of Rosheen's to be talking about confirmation, in my opinion, and she 'seemed happy' early in the day of the attack. Could be she's had presentiments in the past that turned out to be true, and Tag tends to take notice of them.

In Dragonheart which I just finished reading, the main character Fiona also has this power, which she uses unconsciously. They refer to it as compelling someone, and state that it is fairly common among Queenriders, and that dragonriders in the third pass know about it and are trained to block it out.
