Red face Re: Who's who in real life? Updated!

I just was reading some of the older thread topics and found this one.

http://forums.srellim.org/showthread.php?t=5336

I don't even know if I've add on.

My grandfather on my dad's side ran two types of mills, saw (wood smith), and a grist mill, He also did sorghum cane too,I'm not to sure, but a farmer/baker craft I would think.

He also was a head time keeper, (steward) and was the one in say how the wood got cut before the inventions of the computer added ones today. He must have done a good job for the building (with modification are still there.) The place they lived in is gone, but isn't that far from the dam site. Grandmother, stay and raised the family, this was before my father was born, he was the last one.

My father worked as a he said, j.o.a.t. in a lumber yard, a carter, and now a retired carter, he is painter, cook/baker

Mom was a kitchen helper, did some assembly of boxes and wooden flats, Some thing like the ones that were used in Skies of Pern, to help reforest areas after the Fireball flood.

I know of some folks that remind me of

My grandfather was a master shipwright for the fishing industry back when schooners were the thing, he could also play 24 musical instruments so he was both a craftsman and harper to me.

Good to hear, welcome to MoM. My grandmother played the organ, she played it for fun.

So; you swapped a dog-collar for a choke-chain?

Apart from that: you're still haranguing the crowds and trying to control the ruling committee. The only difference is that your long and ernest prayers tend to be sotto voce!

I don't really know who my ancestors were; I'm adopted, and I don't know much about my biological family history. I do know I'm seventy-five percent Irish (clan McVicker on my full-blooded biological father's side), the rest being Scots-European. Anyone know a good place to look up family history?

I'm not quite sure what my real family's history is like, either -I've forgotten a lot-, but there's apparently a lot of British in there. I dunno what they mighta done for a living, but it must've been something interesting, since I got the surname "Barrow". XD (That's a burial mound or a hill for anyone who doesn't know Brit-speak.)

Multi-Facets - the internet is a good place to start, there's :LOTS of interesting genealogy information there

My great grand-parents emmigrated from Scotland in the mid 1800's.
In 1896, with his wife pregnant with their tenth child, he went out rabbit shooting and when climbing over a fence, somehow shot himself. Very careless of him!

Ginny: Thank you for the thought; I appreciate it.

Lily: But where on the internet? Is there one site more reliable or detailed than others? Is there a search term that'll make the search easier? I have no idea. :-/

And ouch, careless indeed. I bet something went wrong with the gun; if it wasn't a bladed instrument back then, it didn't seem to be very reliable.

My real life has changed so much in the last few years.
I retired from being an active pastor.
I am active in Toastmasters and am currently president of my local club.
I became active in politics and ran for Mayor of Bellemeade Kentucky and was just re-elected.
I still preach now and then and I have not been on an archaeological dig since 2005

Re family history: I did most of my research before it became available on the internet, and much letter writing and archive visiting it entailed too.
But I enjoyed it, and many relatives sent photos and information which was greatly appreciated. Oh - and newspaper offices, and births, deaths and marriages offices. The Seventh Day Adventists are great on family history.

Was quite lucky really, official information costs a lot now, officialdom must have got wise to this source of funds!!

Oh - information on the internet should not be hard to find, if you throw the appropriate words into a search, surely???

There's also loads of magazines out there that deal with family history. I've never delve into it much. I know there's a book that's dealt with my father's side of the family - unfortunately it didn't include our branch of the family which kind of upset my dad a little but it's there somewhere on my mum's bookshelves. I've also received 2 books that have a lot of different people in it and somehow my name popped up in it although no-one else from my family when the people researching it, printed it - I think it was something to do with penpals or something along those lines when snail mail was very popular before emails came into popularity and they thought "beauty, another one we've found!" so we'll add it to our list, except in the last 25 years, I've moved several times so they may not find me except through internet searches.

Besides what Lily mentioned, there's also electoral roles (not sure if you can access them publicly or not), telephone books, your local library would have microfilms of old newspapers etc, umm I'm running out of ideas here. I'm not sure how many of us has looked into our family history, except maybe Lily or Hans .

I know my grandmother side had a book, I'm not too sure. I do know that my grandfather helped build stuff as part of CCW (sp) He had a high school education, and was one who had a mill. First to born here in the USA too.

A local author we know of has some of the Korleski in it. The school house there is gone, but some of the other are used for home, hall and many other things.

There's a site called 'ancestry.com' who sell you information.

AS Jube said, there are electoral rolls and old newspapers. Also tithe maps, street directories, trade directories, and early census returns. The directories often predate telephones, but folks still needed the equivalent to yellow pages. The tithe maps usually have the plots/fields numbered, and there's a book to go with it which tells you who owned that plot and who rented it off them (and sometimes gives their trade too).

Part of my family is Manx (my Great Grandmother was 3/4 Manx) so when I was quite young (the second trip was when I was 15, this was the first trip so I was about 10 I think) we went to the Isle of Man to look for various ancestors. Going through a graveyard we found lots and lots of Corkhills (sp)... W. Corkhill was the local stonemason (the type that actually work with stone, not the secret society type) in the late 19th C!

Try your local library/bookstore and get a good, up to date, "How to.. " book. For British ancestry - try ancestry.co.uk, findmypast.co.uk. The Federation of Family History Societies and GENUKI can help too. But if you get into Yorkshire ancestry try this one http://www.yorkshireroots.org.uk

This is slightly off topic but possibly revelant as it made me feel good at the time .... "you know your books" and this was from a customer at yesterday's market. It helps that (1) I like books and (2) my mum was a librarian so it's easy for me to find stuff ..... okay, okay, I can goof up occasionally but sometimes I do know what I'm talking about, every other time I will stuff up so any info I provide will be a guide only to help you out, Multi-facets. I hope we've been able to help you out with what to look for.

The area my dad's mother comes from is covered in a book, which mentions a landmark important to our family but no actual relatives. I think the most interesting thing that I know of is the fact that we have cousins in common with Alex Haley. To be clear, we're not actually related, but we both have the same Lowrys as cousins.

My Dad's family came from the British Isles, Mom's came from Poland and Chechoslovakia. Both my grandfathers worked in the Pennsylvania coal mines. Nick took me looking for my great-great-great grandfather's grave in Wales... I think he was either a coal miner or an inn keeper.

Forgot to mention I've also got some Native American in my background somewhere, and Mom's family's from Mexico. Got some soldiers on Dad's side going back to my great-greant-grandfather, and both grandfathers and my mom worked in steel mills.

I know very little of my family history.

What I do know is that both my parents served in the British Army during the War, my father learned his Catering Trade in there I think and my mother was a WAF Teleprinter Operator.

They came out to NZ after the War during the Immigration Influx during that period. I can't remember if they met back in England, on the boat or once they were over here though.

Hope I'm answering this correctly...

My ancestors are Scots, English, German and Cherokee. Some royalty (but I ignore it), alot of soldiers/warriors (mostly Marines), but mostly craftspersons.

My dad was a mechanic, my mom a secretary. My paternal grandfather was a cabinet maker and it runs in the blood. My great-grandfather was mayor of Fayetteville, AR.

I'm a mom and wife, used to be an office manager and once a truck driver. My hubby is a truck driver and retired Air Force.

Default Re: Who's who in real life? Updated!

My family tree is firmly anchored in the Netherlands, at least my dad's has been sice 1600. We could not get farther back because, the church administration at that time is lost in a fire.
One of my mum's ancestors was a french officer who deserted Napolion's army but I don't know very much about it. My aunt had the whole story (so far, as it was discoverd) on paper, but I don't know were they are now. When I was a teener I was not interested, and now I am, they are gone.
